Chapter 8 - The Woman Behind the Smile

Vanessa Kensington arrived at Harrison's Philadelphia office at 7:05 the next morning without an appointment.
She wore enormous sunglasses, a camel coat, and a silk scarf wrapped tightly around her hair.
Her appearance was so unlike the woman who had stood barefoot in Khloe's home that the receptionist almost failed to recognize her.
Security did not let her past the lobby.
Harrison watched her through a camera feed.
"She came alone?"
His security chief nodded.
"As far as we can tell."
Khloe stood behind him.
"I want to hear what she says."
"No."
"Harry."
"She is adverse to you in active litigation."
"She is also sleeping with my husband, moving my nursery, and apparently receiving money from his CFO."
Harrison looked at her.
"All excellent reasons not to meet her casually."
Vanessa refused to leave.
She told the receptionist she had evidence.
She said she would speak only to Khloe.
Harrison eventually agreed to a controlled meeting with counsel present, the conversation recorded, and Vanessa clearly informed that Harrison represented Khloe.
Vanessa entered the conference room ten minutes later.
She removed her sunglasses.
There was a bruise beneath her left eye.
Khloe stared at it.
Vanessa noticed.
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Pretend you care."
Khloe sat across from her.
"I don't know if I care."
"I want to know who did it."
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You really are a Cole."
Harrison remained standing near the window.
"Why are you here?"
Vanessa looked at Khloe.
"Richard is going to destroy both of us."
Khloe felt nothing at first.
Then disbelief came.
"You helped him destroy my marriage."
"I thought he was leaving you."
"You laughed about my miscarriages."
Vanessa flinched.
"I know."
"You called me dead weight."
"I know."
"You moved my baby's crib out of my house."
"Richard told me the nursery was being converted for another use."
Khloe leaned forward.
"You wore his shirt in my kitchen."
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Do you want an apology or information?"
"An apology would be insulting."
"Then information."
Harrison placed a recorder on the table.
"Start with Blackthorn."
Vanessa's face changed.
"How do you know that name?"
"Answer the question."
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Security stood outside.
She lowered her voice.
"Leonard created Vesper for me."
"Why?"
"Richard said it was tax planning."
"Did you own it?"
"I thought I did."
"You didn't."
Vanessa looked at Khloe.
"I found that out two nights ago."
"How?"
"I tried to move money from the Vesper account."
"The bank said I wasn't the beneficial owner."
"I confronted Richard."
Khloe glanced at the bruise.
Vanessa saw it.
"He didn't hit me."
"Then who did?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"Leonard."
Harrison's attention sharpened.
"When?"
"Yesterday morning."
"Where?"
"At a parking garage near Richard's office."
"Why?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because I told him I was going to the police about Caleb Mercer."
Khloe's hands became cold.
"You know where Caleb is?"
"No."
"I know where he was."
Harrison sat down for the first time.
Vanessa spoke slowly.
Six days earlier, Leonard had called her after midnight.
He told her a man was coming to the Lower Merion estate with stolen corporate data.
Richard was in New York.
Vanessa was at the house.
Leonard told her to let Caleb into the hidden office and keep him there until Richard arrived.
"You imprisoned him?" Khloe asked.
"I locked the outer study door."
"That is not better."
Vanessa looked away.
"I thought Leonard was sending security."
"Then who arrived?"
"Two men I had never seen before."
"They went into the hidden room."
"I heard yelling."
"Then something hit the floor."
"I tried to open the door, but one of the men shoved me away."
"Richard arrived fifteen minutes later."
Khloe remembered the recovered audio.
Get him off the floor.
Her stomach tightened.
"What did Richard do?"
"He told me to leave."
"I refused."
"Then he said Caleb had tried to extort the company and security was handling it."
"I believed him."
Khloe stared at her.
"You believe whatever keeps you comfortable."
Vanessa looked at her with sudden anger.
"You believed him for six years."
The sentence struck the center of the room.
Khloe almost stood.
Harrison spoke first.
"Enough."
Vanessa's eyes filled, but she blinked the tears away.
"I went back later."
"The hidden room had been cleaned."
"There was blood near the door."
"Caleb was gone."
"Leonard told me never to mention his name."
Harrison folded his hands.
"And yesterday?"
"I found out Leonard controlled Vesper."
"I told him I wanted out."
"He grabbed me in the parking garage and slammed my face against the car."
"He said I was already on every document that mattered."
"He said if the company went down, I would go first."
Khloe felt no sympathy for Vanessa's choices.
But she recognized terror.
She had lived beside it for days.
"Why come here instead of the police?"
Vanessa looked directly at Harrison.
"Because Leonard said Richard owned people in the courthouse, the police department, and the building department."
Harrison's expression did not change.
"People say many things when they want to sound powerful."
Vanessa reached into her bag.
Security moved instantly.
She froze.
"It's a phone."
Harrison nodded.
She slowly removed a second cell phone and placed it on the table.
"Richard doesn't know I have this."
"What is on it?"
"Messages."
"Photos."
"Voice notes."
"Some things Leonard sent me."
"Some things Richard sent me."
Khloe stared at the device.
"Including messages about me?"
Vanessa nodded.
"Yes."
"About my baby?"
Another nod.
Khloe wanted to throw the phone through the window.
Instead, she pushed it toward Harrison.
"Preserve everything."
Vanessa looked surprised.
"You're not going to read it?"
"Not until someone copies it properly."
Harrison gave Khloe a brief approving look.
They documented Vanessa's voluntary surrender of the phone and arranged for an independent forensic copy.
Then Harrison asked the question Khloe had avoided.
"Are you pregnant?"
Vanessa became very still.
Khloe's chest tightened.
For months, that question had haunted her without ever being spoken aloud.
Vanessa looked down at her hands.
"No."
Khloe heard her own heartbeat.
"The message said our baby."
"I know."
"Were you lying?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"Yes."
The room disappeared around Khloe for a moment.
She remembered the kitchen.
The soup.
The glowing iPad screen.
Our baby deserves your last name, Ricky.
That sentence had detonated her marriage.
Now Vanessa admitted one of its central claims had been false.
"Why?"
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"Because Richard kept delaying the divorce."
"He always had another reason."
"The board."
"A financing round."
"Your treatments."
"Then your pregnancy."
"I told him I was pregnant because I wanted him to choose."
Khloe almost laughed.
The sound that came out was closer to a sob.
"So you invented a baby to compete with mine."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Khloe stood.
She could not sit across from her anymore.
"I need five minutes."
Harrison followed her into his office.
Khloe walked to the window and pressed both hands against the glass.
"I hate her."
"I know."
"And I believe her."
"Some of it."
"You don't?"
"I believe she is afraid."
"I believe Leonard assaulted her if the medical evidence supports the timing."
"I believe she has useful information."
"I do not yet believe she arrived this morning because her conscience suddenly woke up."
Khloe turned.
"Then why?"
"Because scared people run toward whichever side looks safer."
"Today, that is us."
The forensic download from Vanessa's phone began at noon.
By 1:10 p.m., investigators found messages showing Richard had directed Vanessa to remove property from the nursery.
By 1:30, they found Leonard instructing her to transfer money through Vesper.
By 2:00, they found Richard telling Vanessa to delete conversations about Meridian One.
Then they found a voice note from Richard dated three months earlier.
His voice was unmistakable.
"If Khloe ever asks about her mother's shares, tell her they were converted years ago."
"She has never understood the company structure, and I intend to keep it that way."
Khloe listened without reacting.
Then another message appeared.
It was from Vanessa to Richard.
What if she finds the old shareholder book?
Richard replied.
She won't.
I moved it after Evelyn died.
Khloe felt anger rise.
Her mother's name had been Evelyn.
Richard had gone through her mother's belongings before the funeral boxes were even closed.
Harrison saw the same implication.
"He knew about the shares before your mother died."
"How?"
"We find out."
Then the forensic examiner opened a deleted message thread between Vanessa and Leonard.
Most of it concerned Vesper.
One exchange was different.
Leonard had sent Vanessa a photograph.
It showed a blue archival box on a desk.
Khloe recognized it instantly.
Her mother's missing shareholder records.
Leonard's message beneath the image said:
R.H. wants the originals destroyed after the hearing.
Vanessa replied:
Why wait?
Leonard answered:
Because he still needs the signature page.
Khloe leaned closer.
"Signature page for what?"
Naomi searched the phone.
No answer appeared.
Then a calendar entry surfaced.
Friday - 9:00 a.m. - Montgomery County Courthouse - K.H. execution.
Khloe's skin prickled.
"Execution?"
Harrison zoomed in.
"Legal documents are sometimes marked for execution when they need signatures."
Khloe stared at the word.
"That is a terrible choice of language."
"In this context, yes."
Friday was two days away.
The same morning as the next scheduled hearing.
Harrison looked at Vanessa.
"What was supposed to happen Friday?"
Vanessa had gone pale.
"I don't know."
"Your phone says you do."
"Leonard put appointments on my calendar sometimes."
"Why would he schedule something for Khloe?"
"I don't know."
Harrison watched her for several seconds.
Then Vanessa's own phone rang inside the evidence bag.
The caller identification appeared on the forensic screen.
LEONARD PIKE.
Everyone froze.
Harrison instructed the examiner not to answer until law enforcement could coordinate a recorded call.
The phone stopped ringing.
A message appeared immediately afterward.
You have made a serious mistake.
Then a second message arrived.
Leave Cole's office through the garage.
Come alone.
A third followed.
Or I send Richard the recording you made of Khloe.
Khloe looked at Vanessa.
"What recording?"
May you like
Vanessa's face lost all color.
