Chapter 2 - The First Move

"What am I supposed to do?"

Harrison did not answer immediately.

He rose from behind his desk, crossed to the windows, and looked down at the traffic moving through Manhattan forty stories below.

Khloe had seen that silence before.

When they were children, Harrison became quiet before he fought.

As an adult, he became quiet before he destroyed an argument in court.

Tonight, the silence frightened her because she knew Richard had no idea what it meant.

"You do nothing that he expects," Harrison finally said.

Khloe tightened both hands over her stomach.

"He expects me to cry."

"Yes."

"He expects me to confront him."

"Yes."

"He expects me to ask him to choose me."

Harrison turned from the glass.

"And that is why you will not do any of those things."

He returned to the desk and opened a yellow legal pad.

The page was blank.

Then Harrison wrote one word across the top.

CONTROL.

"Richard believes he controls the money, the house, the timing, and the story," he said.

"By tomorrow night, I want him unsure about all four."

Khloe stared at the word.

"How?"

"First, you do not go home alone."

"Harry, I live there."

"Not tonight."

"If I disappear, he'll know I found something."

"Then we do not disappear."

Harrison reached for his phone.

Within ten minutes, a woman named Naomi Price entered the office carrying a leather case and wearing the expression of someone who had not been surprised by anything in years.

Naomi was Harrison's senior forensic accountant.

She had spent twelve years tracing money through shell companies, fake consulting contracts, family offices, crypto wallets, art purchases, and offshore trusts.

She did not ask Khloe how she felt.

She asked for passwords.

Khloe gave her everything she knew.

The family iPad account.

The household banking portal.

The property tax login.

The estate insurance files.

The digital copies of Richard's development disclosures.

Naomi connected the tablet to a secure laptop and began cloning every accessible record.

"Do not delete anything," Harrison told Khloe.

"Do not forward anything from his account to yours."

"Do not change a password."

"Do not give him a reason to claim you altered evidence."

Khloe nodded.

Her hands had stopped shaking.

The fear was still there, but it was changing shape.

For the first time since reading Vanessa's message, she had something more useful than grief.

She had instructions.

At 9:14 p.m., Naomi found the first shell company.

At 9:31 p.m., she found three more.

At 10:02 p.m., she stopped typing.

"Harrison."

He crossed the office.

Naomi rotated the screen toward him.

A transfer chart filled the display.

Marital funds had moved from a Harrington Commercial operating account into a consulting entity called Pine Meridian LLC.

From there, the money split into five smaller transfers.

Two went to banks in Delaware.

One went to a trust administrator in Nevada.

One went to a real estate holding company in the Cayman Islands.

The last went somewhere Naomi could not immediately identify.

Khloe leaned closer.

"How much?"

Naomi enlarged the total.

$8,740,000.

Khloe felt the room tilt.

"That can't be right."

"It is right," Naomi said.

"And this is only what I can see from the accounts you had access to."

Harrison's face remained unreadable.

"When did the transfers begin?"

Naomi scrolled.

"Twenty-three months ago."

Khloe closed her eyes.

That was almost exactly when Richard's affair with Vanessa appeared to have started.

Harrison saw the connection at the same moment.

"He did not just start sleeping with her two years ago," he said.

"He started preparing for your exit two years ago."

The words hurt more than Khloe expected.

An affair could be reckless.

A lie could be impulsive.

This was neither.

Richard had been building a trap while kissing her goodnight.

At 10:40 p.m., Harrison arranged for Khloe to stay in a private apartment owned by his firm.

At 10:52 p.m., he called a family law partner in Philadelphia.

At 11:07 p.m., he called a former federal prosecutor who specialized in asset recovery.

At 11:26 p.m., he told his investigator to begin preserving public records connected to every company on Naomi's screen.

Then he did something Khloe did not understand.

He called a doctor.

"You are five months pregnant and under extreme stress," he said after ending the call.

"I want a physician to examine you tonight."

Khloe almost laughed.

"You are building a financial war room and worrying about my blood pressure?"

Harrison looked at her as though the answer should have been obvious.

"The money can wait."

"You cannot."

That was the first moment she cried in his office.

Not because of Richard.

Because her brother had said in five words what her husband had failed to make her feel for years.

You matter more than the problem.

The doctor arrived shortly after midnight.

The baby's heartbeat was strong.

Khloe's blood pressure was elevated but not immediately dangerous.

She was told to rest, hydrate, and avoid unnecessary stress.

Harrison listened with the same attention he gave judges.

When the doctor left, Khloe sank into the leather sofa.

"How exactly am I supposed to avoid stress?"

For the first time that night, the corner of Harrison's mouth moved.

"By letting me have some of it."

Her phone vibrated on the coffee table.

RICHARD.

Khloe stared at the screen until it stopped.

Thirty seconds later, it rang again.

Then a text arrived.

Where are you?

Another followed.

I came home and you're gone.

Then another.

Call me.

Khloe looked at Harrison.

"Do I answer?"

"Not yet."

The phone vibrated again.

This time, the message was different.

We need to talk before tomorrow.

Khloe frowned.

Tomorrow?

Harrison extended his hand.

She gave him the phone.

A final message appeared while he was reading.

Do not make me handle this through lawyers.

Harrison's expression changed almost imperceptibly.

"He already has a lawyer ready."

"How do you know?"

"Because innocent husbands do not threaten legal escalation twelve minutes after discovering their pregnant wives are not home."

Khloe's stomach tightened.

"So he knows I know?"

"Maybe."

"Or he was planning to move tomorrow anyway."

Harrison handed the phone back.

"We will let him show us which one."

At 7:00 the next morning, Harrison's Philadelphia team filed an emergency petition to preserve marital assets.

At 7:16, they filed a notice demanding that specified financial records not be destroyed.

At 7:41, a private process server was on the road toward Harrington Commercial Group's headquarters.

At 8:03, Naomi discovered that Pine Meridian LLC had attempted to transfer another $1.2 million overnight.

The transfer had been initiated eleven minutes after Richard's first text to Khloe.

Harrison read the timestamp twice.

Then he looked at his sister.

"Now we know."

Khloe swallowed.

"He knows."

"Yes."

Her phone rang again.

This time, Richard did not call from his cell.

He called from the main number at Harrington Commercial Group.

Khloe answered on speaker.

"Hello?"

Richard's voice was gentle.

Too gentle.

"Khloe, I don't know what you think you saw."

Harrison raised one finger, warning her not to interrupt.

"But I need you to understand that there are explanations for things that look bad without context," Richard continued.

Khloe stared at the phone.

He had just confirmed everything without admitting anything.

"Where are you?" Richard asked.

Khloe took a breath.

"Somewhere safe."

The silence on the other end lasted three seconds.

"With Harrison?"

Khloe said nothing.

Richard exhaled slowly.

"Of course."

His tone changed.

The warmth disappeared.

"Tell your brother he needs to stay out of my company."

Harrison leaned toward the phone.

"Good morning, Richard."

The line went silent.

Harrison's voice was perfectly calm.

"You have twenty-four hours to preserve every financial record you control."

Richard laughed once.

"You don't represent my company."

"No."

"I represent the woman you tried to rob."

Richard's breathing became audible.

"Be careful, Harrison."

"I am always careful."

"You don't know what you're walking into."

Harrison looked at Naomi's transfer chart.

"Then I suppose you should have hidden it better."

The call ended.

Khloe expected Harrison to look satisfied.

He did not.

Instead, he stared at the phone as if Richard had said something more important than a threat.

"What?"

Harrison did not answer at first.

Then Naomi's laptop chimed.

A new public filing had appeared in Montgomery County.

Richard Harrington had filed for divorce at 8:11 that morning.

Attached to the petition was a claim that Khloe had abandoned the marital home.

There was also a request for exclusive possession of the estate.

But the final attachment made Khloe's skin turn cold.

It was a sworn statement from Richard.

In it, he accused Khloe of being emotionally unstable.

He claimed her pregnancy had made her irrational.

He claimed she had threatened to destroy his company if he ever left her.

Then Khloe reached the final paragraph.

Richard requested immediate access to her medical records.

He wrote that he had concerns about whether Khloe was capable of making safe decisions for their unborn child.

Khloe looked up slowly.

"He is going after the baby."

Harrison's eyes hardened.

"No."

He closed the filing.

"He is trying to make you afraid that he can."

Then another document loaded.

Harrison read the first page.

For the first time all morning, he stopped moving.

"What is it?" Khloe whispered.

He turned the screen toward her.

It was a prenuptial agreement.

Khloe stared at the signature on the final page.

It looked exactly like hers.

There was only one problem.

May you like

She had never signed it.
