Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Door

The discovery of Leonard's message changed Friday's security plan immediately.
The front-step camera was not taken down.
Instead, state investigators installed two additional cameras facing the same area without telling courthouse facilities staff.
A plainclothes officer was assigned near the west stairwell.
Khloe's security detail doubled.
Harrison still wanted her to appear remotely.
Khloe refused.
"Richard spent months planning to make me afraid in public."
"This is not about pride."
"I know."
"It is about the fact that every time I disappear from a room, he tells people I am unstable, hiding, or too emotional to face him."
"You do not owe anyone a performance of courage."
"I am not performing for them."
Khloe rested a hand on her stomach.
"I need to know I did not spend the last months of this pregnancy letting him decide where I was allowed to stand."
Harrison looked at her for a long time.
Then he nodded.
"You stay within arm's reach of security."
"Agreed."
"You do not leave through an unplanned exit."
"Agreed."
"If I say we go, we go."
Khloe sighed.
"You enjoyed that one."
"Immensely."
Before Friday arrived, however, Khloe used her restored shareholder status to make a move Richard did not expect.
The board of Harrington Commercial had scheduled an emergency session Thursday afternoon.
Richard assumed it would be closed to her.
The old shareholder agreement said otherwise.
As a voting shareholder raising a documented material safety concern, Khloe had the right to request attendance for the relevant portion of the meeting.
At 1:55 p.m., she entered the company's forty-third-floor boardroom beside Harrison and independent corporate counsel.
Richard was already seated at the head of the table.
His face changed when he saw her.
"This is a board meeting."
Khloe placed the authenticated shareholder ledger on the table.
"I know."
"You are not a director."
"I am an owner."
Richard looked at his general counsel.
The lawyer did not rescue him.
"Her inspection rights were confirmed this morning."
Khloe took the empty seat directly opposite Richard.
For the first time in six years, she entered one of his business rooms without being introduced as his wife.
She was there in her own name.
The board chair, Margaret Lin, opened the meeting.
She was sixty-four and had spent three decades in institutional real estate finance.
Richard had once described her as impossible to intimidate and annoying because of it.
Today, Khloe understood why.
Margaret did not ask about the affair.
She did not ask about the divorce.
She asked about concrete compression data.
"Mr. Harrington, why do internal test files for Meridian One differ from the reports provided to lenders and inspectors?"
Richard leaned back.
"They are preliminary tests."
Naomi placed both versions on the screen.
"The timestamps show the failed tests preceded the public passing reports by forty-eight hours."
Richard looked at her.
"Who are you?"
"The person who followed your money."
Harrison almost smiled.
Margaret did not.
"Answer the question, Richard."
He claimed subcontractors had corrected the problem and that updated results were legitimate.
Khloe asked for proof of remediation.
Richard said it existed in project files.
The files produced that morning contained no such proof.
Another director asked why consulting payments had gone to shell companies after failed tests.
Richard blamed Leonard Pike.
A third director asked why Leonard was missing.
Richard said he had no idea.
Then Margaret asked about Daniel Mercer.
Richard's jaw tightened.
"A disgruntled former engineer."
"He died."
"That does not make his accusations accurate."
Khloe finally spoke.
"What about Caleb?"
The room changed.
Richard looked at her.
"What about him?"
"His blood was found behind a hidden wall in our house."
Several board members turned toward Richard.
He did not blink.
"He broke into my residence with stolen data."
Khloe stared at him.
"You never told police that."
"My lawyers handled it."
"Your lawyers said he was a trespasser."
"You just said he had stolen data."
Richard realized the distinction too late.
Harrison leaned toward independent corporate counsel.
"Please preserve that statement."
Richard's face hardened.
"This is exactly why she should not be here."
Khloe felt anger rise.
"Because I ask follow-up questions?"
"Because you are turning a business investigation into marital revenge."
Khloe looked around the table.
"I did not alter the test reports."
"I did not hide a server room."
"I did not forge a shareholder transfer."
"I did not pay a nurse for my own medical records."
"And I did not make a man's blood appear inside my house."
The room went completely silent.
Richard's voice dropped.
"Be careful."
Khloe almost smiled.
"You keep saying that like it still works."
Margaret called a recess.
Twenty minutes later, the independent directors voted six to two to place Richard on temporary administrative leave pending a special committee investigation.
His authority to move corporate funds was suspended.
His access to internal servers was restricted.
Leonard Pike was formally terminated for abandonment and suspected misconduct.
Khloe did not celebrate.
She watched Richard receive the decision.
He became very still.
That stillness frightened her more than yelling would have.
When the meeting ended, Richard waited near the elevator.
Security stood between them.
"You think you won something today," he said.
Khloe pressed the call button.
"I think people asked you questions you could not answer."
"You embarrassed me in my own boardroom."
"Your boardroom?"
She looked back at the long table.
"That seems to be the problem."
The elevator opened.
Richard stepped closer despite security.
"You have no idea what happens if financing freezes."
"Projects stop."
"Workers lose jobs."
"Families lose benefits."
"All because your brother wants a trophy."
Khloe looked at him.
"Then release the real safety records and prove him wrong."
Richard's eyes hardened.
"Friday."
"Last chance."
The elevator doors closed between them.
At 5:30 p.m., Harrington Commercial issued a public statement announcing Richard's temporary leave.
The stock in several affiliated public debt instruments fell sharply.
Lenders requested emergency calls.
Reporters surrounded the headquarters.
Richard's publicist responded with a new narrative.
At 6:15 p.m., an anonymous medical source told a tabloid that Richard privately questioned whether Khloe's unborn child was biologically his.
The allegation spread within minutes.
Khloe saw it on her phone while eating soup.
She stopped with the spoon halfway to her mouth.
Harrison took the device away.
"Do not read comments."
"He is questioning his own daughter now."
"Publicly, through anonymous sourcing."
"He wanted this baby for years."
"He said he wanted her."
Khloe's voice broke.
"There is a difference."
The rumor was particularly cruel because of the fertility history.
Online strangers speculated that Khloe had used donor material without Richard's knowledge.
Others accused her of an affair.
One commentator suggested the natural pregnancy was "too convenient."
Harrison's team documented the coverage without engaging.
Khloe's obstetrician offered to issue a statement that her pregnancy was medically plausible.
Khloe declined.
"I am not putting my reproductive history on trial for people who do not know me."
Harrison nodded.
"Good."
Then Richard texted her directly.
We can end all of this tomorrow.
Sign what is in front of you.
I will publicly acknowledge the baby.
Khloe stared at the words until the anger became almost calm.
He had just tied recognition of his daughter to her signature.
She forwarded the message to counsel.
Harrison read it once.
"He is losing discipline."
"Because the board suspended him?"
"Because control is the only language he understands."
At 9:00 p.m., police finally located Patricia Sloan.
She walked into a suburban emergency room alone, dehydrated and terrified.
Her wrists were bruised.
She said Leonard had forced her to drive his Mercedes to the airport, then moved her through two motel rooms while demanding that she contact her sister Miriam.
He wanted Miriam to sign a statement saying she had personally approved the altered engineering tests.
Patricia refused.
Leonard struck her and left her locked in a basement room.
She escaped through a window after hearing him leave.
Khloe listened to the update in silence.
"Where is Leonard?"
"Still missing," Harrison said.
Patricia gave police one more piece of information.
While Leonard was on the phone, she heard him say he needed to be at the courthouse Friday because "Richard still has one move left."
Khloe looked at Harrison.
"He is coming tomorrow."
"Maybe."
"You know he is."
Harrison's phone vibrated.
A message from law enforcement contained a still image from a highway camera taken twenty minutes earlier.
A black SUV was heading south toward Montgomery County.
The driver was Leonard Pike.
