Chapter 12 - The Partner Who Opened the Door

Harrison did not rush to the office.

That was exactly what whoever entered the building might have expected.

Instead, he called the private security supervisor already monitoring the property and told him to lock the garage exits without alerting the intruder.

Then he contacted police.

Khloe watched the camera feed from the secure residence.

The man carrying the blue archival box moved through the dark office with confidence.

He did not search for lights.

He did not hesitate at intersections.

He knew the floor plan.

He knew exactly where Harrison's conference room was.

When he stepped beneath a brighter camera, Khloe stopped breathing.

"It is Evan."

Harrison said nothing.

Evan Ross removed his cap and looked toward the elevator.

He appeared exhausted.

His tie was loose.

A bruise marked his jaw.

He carried the archival box to Harrison's conference room and placed it on the table.

Then he sat down.

He did not touch a computer.

He did not open a drawer.

He simply waited.

Harrison's phone rang.

Evan.

He answered on speaker.

"I know you are watching me," Evan said.

Harrison's face remained unreadable.

"Then tell me why you are in my office after two in the morning."

"Because if I leave this box anywhere else, Leonard kills me."

Khloe looked at Harrison.

"Where did you get it?" Harrison asked.

"A parking locker under City Hall."

"Who told you it was there?"

"Leonard."

"Why you?"

Evan closed his eyes on the camera feed.

"Because I have been feeding Richard information for nineteen months."

Khloe felt the words like a physical blow even though the betrayal belonged mostly to her brother.

Harrison did not move.

"What information?"

"Case schedules."

"Names."

"Whether Daniel Mercer had contacted you."

"Whether you were speaking to prosecutors."

"Nothing privileged at first."

"Then more."

Harrison's voice became colder.

"Why?"

Evan looked directly at the camera.

"Because I owed money."

"To whom?"

"Not Richard."

"Leonard bought the debt."

Evan's voice cracked.

"I made a series of stupid investments after my divorce."

"I borrowed against everything."

"When I could not pay, the lender sold the note to a company I later learned Leonard controlled."

"He offered to forgive it if I answered harmless questions."

Harrison's expression did not change.

Khloe knew him well enough to see the damage anyway.

"And the questions stopped being harmless," Harrison said.

"Yes."

"Did you plant the camera in Khloe's apartment?"

"No."

"Did you tell Leonard where she was?"

Evan lowered his head.

"Yes."

Khloe closed her eyes.

Harrison's voice remained steady.

"Did you know they would place a camera there?"

"No."

"Did you know Patricia Sloan had been taken?"

"No."

"Did you know Caleb Mercer was held at the Lower Merion house?"

"No."

"Did you know Richard planned to trick my sister into signing away her shares?"

Evan looked up.

"I knew there was a signature plan."

Harrison's hand tightened around the phone.

"And you said nothing."

"I was trying to get out."

"You were trying to save yourself."

Evan flinched.

"Yes."

Police entered the conference room on the camera feed.

Evan raised his hands immediately.

The blue box was secured.

Inside were the original stock certificate, the shareholder agreement, the old company ledger, and three handwritten letters from Khloe's mother.

One document was missing.

The blank spousal acknowledgment page.

Harrison asked Evan where it was.

"Leonard kept it."

"Why bring the rest back?"

"Because Leonard told me to destroy it tonight."

"I couldn't."

Khloe felt anger rise.

"You could betray Harrison for nineteen months, but burning paper was where you found a conscience?"

Evan heard her through the speaker.

His face collapsed.

"Khloe, I am sorry."

"Do not apologize to me."

"You told a man where I was hiding while I was pregnant."

"You do not get to make yourself feel better by saying sorry."

Evan lowered his eyes.

Harrison did not defend him.

He asked one final question before police took Evan away for formal questioning.

"Who is M.C.?"

Evan froze.

That hesitation gave Harrison the answer before the name did.

"Martin Crowe."

Khloe did not recognize it.

Harrison did.

Martin Crowe was deputy director of facilities and security administration for the Montgomery County courthouse complex.

He controlled contractor access.

Camera maintenance schedules.

After-hours badge permissions.

Temporary security zones.

The exact systems that could make evidence appear or disappear around a courthouse.

"What did Richard pay him for?" Harrison asked.

"I never saw direct instructions."

"Leonard said Crowe could make a hallway private when privacy mattered."

Harrison looked at Friday's hearing schedule.

Khloe felt the same chill.

A plan to obtain her signature at the courthouse.

A compromised security administrator.

A mistress instructed to provoke her.

A packet designed to hide a corporate consent inside a marital agreement.

Friday suddenly looked less like a hearing and more like a stage.

By dawn, police had interviewed Evan for three hours.

He admitted giving Leonard access to selected internal scheduling information and confidential strategy summaries.

He also admitted telling Leonard that Daniel Mercer had contacted Harrison before Daniel died.

That was how Richard had known.

Harrison sat alone when he heard the confirmation.

Khloe found him in the kitchen staring at a cup of coffee he had not touched.

"You trusted him."

"Yes."

"For seven years."

"Yes."

"Harry."

He looked at her.

"Do not tell me it is different from Richard."

Khloe stopped.

"I wasn't going to."

"It is different in scale."

"It is not different in the part that hurts."

Khloe sat across from him.

"Then I won't tell you not to be angry."

Harrison gave a tired laugh.

"You learned that quickly."

"I had a good teacher."

At 8:00 a.m., Harrison's firm placed Evan on immediate leave and notified affected clients that an internal security breach was under investigation.

Harrison voluntarily appointed outside ethics counsel to review every matter Evan had touched.

Khloe watched him do it.

He did not hide embarrassment.

He did not minimize the breach.

He did not blame Evan publicly before evidence was complete.

The contrast with Richard was impossible to miss.

Power did not reveal character because powerful people never made mistakes.

It revealed character because everyone eventually did.

At 9:10 a.m., the blue archival records were authenticated by the company's former corporate secretary.

The result was devastating for Richard.

Khloe's 2.7 percent voting block had never been legally transferred.

The original ledger still listed her as owner.

The forged electronic filing contradicted the paper records.

More importantly, the shareholder agreement gave her immediate inspection rights regarding material safety risks.

Harrison filed an emergency motion to enforce those rights.

The court scheduled argument for Friday.

The same Friday Richard had planned to use against her.

Khloe looked at the notice.

"I am going."

Harrison immediately answered.

"We will discuss it."

"That means you want to say no."

"That means there are security concerns."

"Then solve them."

"Martin Crowe controls courthouse facilities."

"Not anymore if police suspend his access."

Harrison had already requested exactly that.

By noon, Crowe had been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.

His badge was disabled.

His office computer was seized under warrant.

For the first time, the courthouse appeared safer than Richard had expected it to be.

That did not make Harrison comfortable.

It made him more suspicious.

At 2:30 p.m., investigators searching Crowe's office found a printed floor plan of the courthouse.

Several areas were highlighted.

One was the private mediation room scheduled for Khloe's case.

Another was the west stairwell.

The third was the grand exterior staircase leading to the public plaza.

Next to the exterior stairs, someone had written a time.

12:40.

Friday.

Khloe stared at the notation.

"Why the stairs?"

No one knew.

Harrison looked at Friday's schedule.

The corporate records hearing was expected to end around noon.

A settlement conference had been proposed afterward.

12:40 would place Khloe somewhere near the courthouse exit.

"Maybe it is just a security route," Khloe said.

Harrison did not answer.

Then police opened a locked drawer in Crowe's desk.

Inside they found a small envelope containing $15,000 in cash and a prepaid phone.

The phone held only six messages.

Five were deleted beyond immediate recovery.

The sixth had been received from Leonard two days earlier.

It contained one instruction.
