Chapter 14 - The Ride With Leonard

Vanessa had left police protection less than an hour before the highway camera captured her with Leonard.

She had told the officer assigned to her that she needed five minutes alone in a pharmacy restroom.

A rear service door had been propped open.

By the time the officer realized she was gone, Vanessa's phone was in a trash can and a rideshare had already carried her three blocks away.

Khloe stared at the traffic image.

"She went willingly."

Harrison did not answer.

The passenger door was closed.

No weapon was visible.

Vanessa was facing forward.

None of that proved willingness.

"Call her," Khloe said.

"Her phone was abandoned."

"The second phone."

The second device remained with investigators.

"Then Richard."

Harrison shook his head.

"Not yet."

Police tracked the SUV through license plate readers.

It left the highway near King of Prussia and disappeared into a commercial district filled with garages and loading bays.

Officers searched without success.

At 11:20 p.m., Khloe received an email.

It came from Vanessa's personal account.

The message contained one sentence.

I lied to you again.

Harrison froze the email for forensic review.

A second message arrived two minutes later.

Richard never asked me to provoke you Friday.

A third followed.

Harrison invented that story to keep you fighting.

Khloe stared at the screen.

"That does not even make sense."

"It does not need to," Harrison said.

"It only needs to create doubt."

Then a fourth message arrived.

I am going to tell the court everything tomorrow.

Khloe felt anger rather than fear.

"Leonard has her."

"Or Vanessa chose a side again."

"Which do you think?"

Harrison looked at the messages.

"I think someone wants you to spend tonight wondering whether I manipulated you."

Khloe met his eyes.

"Did you?"

He did not flinch.

"No."

"Then I am done wondering."

That answer affected him more than she expected.

He looked away first.

At midnight, Khloe's physician called with lab results from the hospital visit.

Her blood pressure remained concerning.

The doctor strongly recommended that she avoid attending court in person.

Harrison put the call on speaker.

Khloe listened.

Then she asked one question.

"If I go with medical monitoring and leave immediately if symptoms worsen, am I creating an unacceptable risk to the baby?"

The doctor paused.

"I cannot call it zero risk."

"I also cannot say a short courthouse appearance is medically prohibited if your readings are stable in the morning."

Harrison looked unhappy.

Khloe thanked the doctor and ended the call.

"Do not start."

"I have not spoken."

"Your face has."

"My face bills by the hour."

Khloe laughed despite herself.

It was the first real laugh either of them had managed in days.

At 6:30 a.m., Friday arrived with cold rain.

Khloe's blood pressure was lower.

The baby moved normally.

Her doctor cleared a limited appearance with strict conditions.

Khloe chose a navy maternity dress because it was comfortable and because she refused to dress like someone attending her own defeat.

Harrison wore a charcoal suit.

Before leaving, he gave her a simple instruction.

"Stay beside me."

"I will."

The courthouse plaza was already crowded with reporters when they arrived.

Cameras flashed.

Questions flew.

Khloe kept one hand beneath her belly as security moved them through the doors.

Inside, the atmosphere felt different from the previous hearing.

State investigators stood near security checkpoints.

Martin Crowe's access had been revoked.

The front-step camera was active.

Two hidden backup cameras were recording.

Every planned weakness had been reinforced.

That knowledge should have comforted Khloe.

Instead, she remembered Richard's message.

Sign what is in front of you.

I will publicly acknowledge the baby.

At 9:00 a.m., the corporate records hearing began.

Richard entered with three lawyers.

Vanessa did not appear.

Leonard did not appear.

Richard looked rested.

Almost relaxed.

Harrison hated that.

The first issue was Khloe's shareholder status.

The authenticated ledger and original stock certificate left little room for argument.

Richard's counsel claimed the transfer had been agreed to verbally and merely documented imperfectly.

The judge asked for proof.

They had none.

The court recognized Khloe's voting interest pending final adjudication and ordered immediate production of safety and compliance records.

Richard's face remained calm.

The second issue concerned evidence preservation.

Harrison's team presented the missing documents, hidden server room, deleted files, and forged storage-unit authorization.

Richard's attorney blamed Leonard.

Again.

The judge finally asked Richard directly whether he authorized Leonard Pike to move or destroy records after litigation began.

Richard answered under oath.

"No."

Harrison wrote the answer down.

Khloe knew that look.

He had just received something he intended to use later.

At 10:40 a.m., the hearing recessed.

A court clerk approached Khloe's lawyers carrying a settlement packet.

"Opposing counsel asked that Mrs. Harrington review this before the next session."

Harrison took it first.

The cover page read INTERIM MARITAL PROPERTY STIPULATION.

Khloe felt cold.

Same title.

Same style.

Harrison slowly turned to the signature page.

A schedule was attached behind it.

Schedule C concerned corporate restructuring.

The trap was still being attempted even after they had discovered it.

Harrison looked across the hallway at Richard.

Richard smiled.

Harrison walked directly to opposing counsel.

"Who prepared this?"

The attorney glanced down.

"Our corporate team."

"Did you read Schedule C?"

The attorney's expression changed.

He had not.

Harrison handed him the document.

The lawyer read two paragraphs and went pale.

"I did not authorize this language."

Richard stood.

"What is the problem?"

His own attorney turned on him.

"You told me this was a temporary property stipulation."

Richard's calm finally cracked.

"It is."

"It contains a permanent shareholder consent."

Several reporters nearby began watching.

Harrison said nothing.

He did not need to.

Richard had tried to deceive not only Khloe but his own counsel in a courthouse hallway.

The attorney folded the document shut.

"We are withdrawing this offer."

Richard grabbed his arm.

"No."

The lawyer pulled free.

"Do not touch me."

Khloe stared at her husband.

For the first time, he looked cornered.

Then a woman's voice came from the far end of the hallway.

"Khloe."

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood near the elevators.

She was alone.

Her hair was wet from the rain.

Her face looked exhausted.

Khloe's security moved immediately.

Harrison stepped in front of his sister.

"Do not come closer."

Vanessa stopped.

Her eyes moved to Richard.

Something passed between them.

Fear.

Anger.

Or agreement.

Khloe could not tell.

"I need to talk to her," Vanessa said.

"No," Harrison answered.

Vanessa's voice rose.

"She deserves to know what her brother did."

Reporters began lifting phones.

Richard did not intervene.

Khloe looked at Vanessa.

"Where is Leonard?"

Vanessa's face twitched.

"I don't know."

"You were in his car last night."

"He forced me."

"Then why did you run from police?"

Vanessa looked around at the cameras.

"Because your brother was going to make me the fall girl."

Harrison's voice remained calm.

"Who told you that?"

Vanessa did not answer.

Khloe already knew.

"Richard."

Vanessa's eyes moved toward him again.

That was enough.

Richard had reached her.

Maybe through Leonard.

Maybe directly.

He had convinced Vanessa that cooperation would destroy her while loyalty could still save her.

Khloe felt something close to pity.

It lasted one second.

Then Vanessa said the cruelest thing she could find.

"At least Richard wanted my baby."

Khloe stared at her.

"You were never pregnant."

The hallway went silent.

Richard's head snapped toward Vanessa.

Reporters reacted instantly.

Vanessa's face went white.

She had forgotten that lie was no longer private.

Khloe continued quietly.

"You told me yourself."

"You invented a pregnancy because he would not leave me fast enough."

Vanessa looked humiliated.

Richard looked furious.

The balance between them changed in public.

Vanessa had become disposable.

She saw it on Richard's face.

Khloe saw her see it.

Then a courthouse officer approached and told everyone to return to the courtroom.

The confrontation ended without violence.

For the moment.

At 11:15 a.m., the hearing resumed.

At 11:47, the judge ordered immediate independent engineering review of three Harrington Commercial properties.

At 12:03, she referred the suspected forged filings and evidence destruction to state investigators.

At 12:18, the hearing ended.

Khloe had won every major issue that morning.

Harrison did not celebrate.

He checked the time.

12:18.

The message to Martin Crowe had requested the front-step camera be down from 12:30 to 1:00.

"We are not using the front exit," he said.

Khloe nodded.

Security redirected them toward a secured side corridor.

Then the fire alarm began to ring.
