Chapter 15 - The Alarm

The fire alarm changed the courthouse in seconds.

Doors released automatically.

Elevators locked.

Courtrooms emptied into hallways.

Security officers began directing everyone toward designated exits.

Khloe's planned side corridor was suddenly filled with people.

Harrison grabbed her hand.

"Stay with me."

Smoke was not visible.

No one could tell whether the alarm was real.

A courthouse officer approached their security detail.

"You have to use the nearest public exit."

Harrison shook his head.

"Not the front stairs."

"Sir, the west corridor is being cleared for fire access."

"Then take us through the employee garage."

The officer hesitated.

His radio crackled.

A voice ordered evacuation toward the plaza.

Harrison's expression hardened.

"Who gave that instruction?"

The officer listened.

"Central security."

Martin Crowe no longer controlled central security.

But someone knew the plan.

Harrison turned to his private team.

"Garage."

They moved against the flow of people.

Khloe held her belly as she walked quickly.

The baby shifted hard beneath her ribs.

A contraction tightened across her abdomen.

She stopped.

Harrison immediately noticed.

"What is it?"

"Just tightening."

"We leave now."

"I am walking."

They reached the employee garage door.

It would not open.

The electronic access panel flashed red.

The security officer tried another badge.

Denied.

A courthouse technician shouted from down the hall.

"Garage doors lock during alarm protocol."

Harrison looked back toward the public exit signs.

Someone had constructed a system where every alternate route narrowed toward the front plaza.

Maybe that was normal fire procedure.

Maybe that was exactly why the plan used a fire alarm.

"Stairs inside, then east service door," Harrison ordered.

They changed direction.

At 12:26 p.m., state police confirmed there was no active fire.

A manual alarm station had been pulled on the second floor.

The person who pulled it was not immediately identified.

The alarm continued while systems reset.

Khloe's group reached the east service door at 12:29.

A maintenance cart blocked it from the outside.

Harrison stared through the glass.

"This is not coincidence anymore."

His security chief agreed.

They returned toward the main lobby.

By then hundreds of people were flowing outside.

Reporters had gathered at the bottom of the grand staircase.

Cameras pointed upward.

The front-step camera remained active.

So did the two hidden state cameras.

Harrison checked with investigators.

"Are the cameras recording?"

"Yes."

"All three?"

"Yes."

He looked at Khloe.

"We go out surrounded."

"Okay."

"No stopping."

"Okay."

"No answering questions."

"Harry."

"Say it."

"No stopping."

They entered the lobby.

Richard stood near the opposite doors with his legal team.

He saw Khloe.

Then he saw the time on the wall clock.

12:33.

His expression changed.

Harrison caught it.

So did Khloe.

"He knows something," she whispered.

"Keep moving."

Vanessa was nowhere in sight.

They stepped outside.

Cold air hit Khloe's face.

The marble stairs shone wet beneath the gray sky.

Security formed a tight ring around her.

Reporters shouted.

Khloe took one careful step down.

Then another.

At the fifth step, someone screamed behind them.

Harrison turned.

A man in a maintenance jacket had shoved through the courthouse doors.

State police moved toward him.

The distraction lasted maybe three seconds.

When Harrison turned back, Vanessa was standing ten feet from Khloe.

No one knew where she had come from.

She was crying.

"You ruined everything!"

Security moved to intercept her.

Vanessa raised both hands.

"I just want to talk."

"Stay back," an officer ordered.

Khloe kept walking.

Vanessa followed along the upper landing parallel to her.

"Richard told me what you did."

Khloe did not answer.

"He said you are giving the company to prosecutors."

Silence.

"He said thousands of people are going to lose their jobs because of you."

Khloe reached the seventh step.

"Vanessa, go home."

The words were quiet.

Vanessa laughed hysterically.

"Home?"

"You took my home."

Khloe stopped despite Harrison's instruction.

She turned.

"I never had your home."

"You were living in mine."

Vanessa's face twisted.

"He promised me that house."

"He promised me a life."

"Look what promises from Richard are worth."

For a moment, Vanessa seemed to understand.

Her shoulders dropped.

Khloe thought the confrontation was ending.

Then Richard appeared at the courthouse doors.

Vanessa looked at him.

Richard did not speak.

He only shook his head once.

A tiny motion.

A private signal.

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

She stepped toward Khloe.

Security moved.

A reporter surged sideways at the same moment, blocking one officer.

Vanessa grabbed Khloe's wrist.

Khloe pulled back.

"Let go of me."

Harrison reached them.

"Take your hand off her."

Vanessa released Khloe.

For one second, everyone froze.

Then Vanessa whispered something only Khloe heard.

"He said the baby isn't even his."

Khloe looked at Richard.

Richard stood motionless above them.

The humiliation was deliberate.

The public accusation.

The anonymous leak.

The courthouse confrontation.

All designed to make her break.

Khloe turned back to Vanessa.

"He says whatever keeps women fighting each other instead of looking at him."

Vanessa flinched.

Khloe continued.

"I am done fighting you for a man who deserves neither of us."

Something in Vanessa collapsed.

Her anger had nowhere to go.

She looked at Richard again.

He looked away.

That dismissal shattered whatever illusion remained.

Vanessa began sobbing.

Security guided Khloe down another step.

The confrontation was over.

At least it should have been.

Then Leonard Pike emerged from the crowd below.

Khloe recognized him from photographs.

Harrison shouted.

"Police!"

Leonard turned and ran.

Officers rushed after him.

Every head turned toward the chase.

Vanessa saw Leonard.

She saw Richard.

She saw police.

Panic exploded across her face.

"You set me up!" she screamed at Richard.

Richard did not move.

Vanessa ran toward him.

Her shoulder struck Khloe as she passed.

Khloe stumbled.

Harrison caught her arm.

For one second, she regained balance.

Then Vanessa spun back.

Whether from rage, panic, or a desperate attempt to reach Richard, she shoved both hands forward.

They struck Khloe high in the chest.

Khloe's heel slipped on wet marble.

Harrison grabbed for her.

His fingers caught fabric.

The fabric tore.

Khloe fell backward.

The world became white stone and sky.

She struck one step.

Then another.

Then another.

Someone screamed.

Her body rolled.

Her shoulder hit marble.

Her hip struck an edge.

Pain exploded through her abdomen.

The fall seemed endless.

Thirty steps became a blur of impact and terror.

Then Khloe stopped at the bottom.

For one second, she heard nothing.

Then sound returned all at once.

Shouting.

Running feet.

A woman crying.

A reporter screaming for an ambulance.

Khloe opened her eyes.

Gray sky.

Harrison's face.

Blood on his hands.

He had dropped to his knees so hard his palms split against the marble.

"Khloe."

His voice cracked.

"Look at me."

"Stay with me."

"Don't close your eyes."

Khloe tried to breathe.

Her trembling fingers reached for his lapel.

"Harry."

Her voice barely existed.

The baby.

She could not feel the baby.

Panic swallowed everything.

"The baby."

A painful breath escaped her.

"Please."

"Save my baby."

Her hand slipped from his suit.

Harrison slowly lifted his head.

At the top of the staircase stood Vanessa.

Both hands were still extended.

Her face had gone completely white.

Beside her stood Richard.

He stared at his wife without taking a single step toward her.

Harrison never blinked.

His gaze settled on both of them with terrifying calm.

Vanessa understood something in that moment.

Prison was no longer the worst thing waiting for her.

Because Harrison Cole did not react with rage.

He dismantled lives.

And before the ambulance doors closed around his sister, Harrison saw one detail everyone else missed.

The main courthouse camera above the entrance had gone dark at 12:34 p.m.

May you like

Exactly one minute before Vanessa shoved Khloe.
