Chapter 9 - The Recording

Vanessa did not answer quickly enough.
Harrison moved the evidence phone aside.
"What recording?"
Vanessa stared at Khloe.
"It was supposed to be insurance."
"Against whom?" Khloe asked.
"Richard."
"Then why is it a recording of me?"
Vanessa pressed her palms together.
"Because I thought if the divorce became ugly, I might need proof that you threatened me."
Khloe's disbelief became anger.
"Did I threaten you?"
"Not exactly."
Harrison's voice sharpened.
"There is no useful legal category called not exactly."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
She explained that two months earlier she had arranged what looked like an accidental meeting with Khloe at a charity design luncheon.
Khloe remembered the day.
Vanessa had approached her near the coat room and made a cruel remark about pregnancy changing women's faces.
Khloe had told her to stay away from her family.
Vanessa had continued provoking her.
Eventually, Khloe had said, "If you keep coming into my life, you are going to regret it."
Vanessa had recorded only that final sentence.
"You edited it?" Khloe asked.
"I saved a short version."
"Did you send it to Richard?"
"Yes."
Khloe laughed once in disbelief.
"So while I was pregnant and trying to understand why my husband barely came home, both of you were building evidence against me."
Vanessa looked ashamed.
"Yes."
"And now Leonard has it."
"Apparently."
Harrison leaned forward.
"Where is the full recording?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"Cloud backup."
"Give us access."
"Why?"
"Because context is the difference between evidence and manipulation."
Vanessa provided the password.
The complete audio showed thirty-one minutes of conversation.
It captured Vanessa approaching Khloe first.
It captured Vanessa mocking her marriage.
It captured Khloe repeatedly trying to leave.
It captured Vanessa saying, "Richard needs a woman who can give him a real family without turning the house into a fertility clinic."
Khloe stopped the playback.
She could not hear more.
Vanessa looked at the table.
"I was cruel."
Khloe's voice was flat.
"Yes."
"I thought winning meant being the woman he picked."
"You weren't competing in a game."
"You were helping a man dismantle his wife."
Vanessa wiped one tear from her cheek.
Khloe felt no urge to comfort her.
Harrison's investigator preserved both the short and long recordings.
Now Leonard's threat had lost much of its power.
But the message proved he had access to evidence that should have belonged only to Vanessa and Richard.
That meant Leonard was deeper inside their private relationship than Khloe understood.
"Why would Richard send private recordings to his CFO?" she asked.
Naomi answered.
"Maybe Leonard was not acting as only a CFO."
They began searching Richard's communications for the same audio file.
It appeared in a folder labeled PERSONAL RESOLUTION.
Inside were other documents.
Draft divorce complaints.
Media talking points about Khloe's mental health.
Lists of friendly reporters.
Private medical information.
Photographs of Khloe entering fertility clinics.
A draft custody strategy prepared months before the baby was conceived.
Khloe stared at the date.
"This was written before I got pregnant."
Harrison read it.
The document was not a formal legal memo.
It was a strategy outline.
If Khloe became pregnant, Richard would seek to establish a record of emotional instability.
If she did not become pregnant, he would use the failed treatments as evidence of marital breakdown and pressure her into a confidential divorce.
Either way, the plan led to the same result.
Khloe would leave quietly.
Richard would retain the company.
The shareholder issue would never surface.
"He had a plan for both outcomes," Khloe whispered.
Harrison said nothing.
"If I had another miscarriage, he would leave me."
"If the pregnancy survived, he would try to use it against me."
Her hands began to shake.
"There was never a version where he stayed."
Harrison moved the laptop away from her.
"Khloe."
"No."
She pulled it back.
"I need to see all of it."
The next file contained a list of people identified by initials.
Some were followed by dollar amounts.
Others had notes such as FRIENDLY, OWES R.H., or USE THROUGH L.P.
One entry read:
M.C. - COURT - 75K - RENEW OCT.
Harrison's expression changed.
"What?" Khloe asked.
"Nothing yet."
"Harry."
He pointed at the initials.
"I know three people in the Montgomery County court system with those initials."
"That does not mean any of them are this person."
"But seventy-five thousand dollars means what?"
"We do not know."
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"I do."
Everyone turned.
"Leonard once told Richard that M.C. was getting expensive."
Harrison's eyes narrowed.
"When?"
"Last year."
"What did Richard say?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"He said, 'Then remind him who paid for his son's rehab.'"
The room went silent.
Harrison immediately contacted law enforcement through a trusted prosecutor outside Montgomery County.
He did not accuse anyone by name.
He provided the recovered entry and Vanessa's statement for independent investigation.
Khloe watched him make the call.
"You believe Richard has someone inside the courthouse."
"I believe we have enough information to make sure the next hearing is treated carefully."
"Should I go?"
"Not without security."
"But should I go at all?"
Harrison looked at her stomach.
The physician had already warned against stress.
He clearly wanted to say no.
Khloe saw it.
"If I stop showing up because Richard makes me afraid, he wins the part of this that matters to me."
"Your safety matters more than symbolism."
"Then make it safe."
Harrison did not answer immediately.
Finally, he nodded.
"I will."
That afternoon, law enforcement coordinated a controlled response to Leonard's message.
Vanessa agreed to tell him she would meet in the parking garage.
Police placed surveillance around the location.
Harrison refused to let Khloe anywhere near it.
At 4:00 p.m., Vanessa entered the garage wearing a wire.
Leonard did not appear.
At 4:07, he sent a message.
Level four.
Vanessa climbed one level.
At 4:12, another message arrived.
Leave your phone by the elevator.
She followed police instructions and placed a decoy phone there.
At 4:18, a black sedan entered the garage.
Investigators prepared to move.
The car stopped two rows away from Vanessa.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
It was not Leonard.
It was Richard.
Vanessa froze.
Richard walked toward her slowly.
"You look terrible."
His voice carried clearly through the wire.
Vanessa forced herself to answer.
"Where is Leonard?"
"Why would I know?"
"He told me to come here."
Richard stopped six feet away.
"Did he?"
"You know he did."
"I know you have been panicking since you discovered Vesper was never yours."
Vanessa's breathing became audible.
"Caleb Mercer."
Richard's face remained calm.
"What about him?"
"What did you do with him?"
"Nothing."
"I heard you in the hidden room."
"You heard me tell security to remove a trespasser."
"There was blood."
Richard leaned closer.
"There is blood in every story if Harrison Cole tells it long enough."
Vanessa glanced toward the cameras.
Richard noticed.
His expression changed.
He looked directly toward a concrete column concealing one of the surveillance officers.
Then he smiled.
"Tell Harrison I said hello."
Police moved.
Richard raised both hands before anyone reached him.
"Am I under arrest?"
The answer was no.
They had no warrant for him.
The controlled meeting had produced suspicious behavior but no direct admission.
Richard walked back to his car surrounded by officers.
Before entering, he looked at Vanessa.
"You should ask Leonard who told him about your second phone."
Then he drove away.
Vanessa was trembling when she returned to Harrison's office.
"He knew."
"Yes," Harrison said.
"He knew I was cooperating."
"It appears so."
"How?"
No one had an answer.
Only six people knew about the controlled meeting.
Vanessa.
Harrison.
Khloe.
Two detectives.
And the outside prosecutor.
Harrison looked at the list.
Khloe saw where his mind went.
"You think there is a leak."
"I know Richard arrived at a meeting he was not invited to and looked directly toward surveillance."
"That is enough to change how we communicate."
Harrison collected every phone in the room.
His security team began checking for compromised devices.
They found nothing on Khloe's phone.
Nothing on Harrison's.
Nothing on the investigators' phones.
Then the technician examined Vanessa's handbag.
Inside the lining was a tracking device smaller than a coin.
Vanessa stared at it in horror.
"I have had this bag for three months."
"Who gave it to you?" Harrison asked.
She looked at Khloe.
"Richard."
That explained how he had followed her.
It did not explain how he knew about the second phone.
At 7:40 p.m., the forensic examiner found another deleted file.
It was a spreadsheet from Leonard Pike's office.
One column listed monthly payments.
Another listed code names.
The code name connected to M.C. appeared twelve times.
So did a second code.
DOVE.
DOVE had received $210,000 over two years.
The final payment had been made three days earlier.
Khloe asked who DOVE was.
Naomi traced the receiving account.
It belonged to a consulting company registered to a woman named Patricia Sloan.
Khloe recognized the surname.
"Related to Miriam Sloan?"
Naomi searched.
Patricia was Miriam's younger sister.
She worked as a nurse.
More specifically, she worked at the obstetrics practice that treated Khloe.
Khloe went completely still.
Harrison was already reaching for the phone.
The pregnancy records had not been stolen from her dressing room first.
May you like
Someone inside her doctor's office had been feeding information to Richard for two years.
