Chapter 5: The Penthouse Sanctuary

The Polanco penthouse occupied the entire top floor of a glass skyscraper that pierced the gray morning clouds of Mexico City.

Inside, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaos raging outside the mansion gates.

Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the sprawling metropolis, while minimalist white furniture and polished oak floors created an environment of chilling, sterile luxury.

Marisol stood by the glass, watching the distant flow of traffic on Paseo de Reforma, still holding Valentina’s small, warm hand.

“Are we safe here, Mama?” Valentina asked softly, her big dark eyes reflecting the city lights below.

“Yes, my love, we are safe,” Marisol whispered, kneeling down to smooth the little girl’s hair, though her own heart hammered frantically against her ribs.

Mateo entered the living area carrying a tray with warm milk and bread, his face lined with quiet concern.

“Mr. Diego’s security detail has locked down the entire floor, Señora Marisol,” Mateo reported respectfully.

“No unauthorized personnel can enter the building, and all communications are encrypted. Mr. Diego said he will join us as soon as he handles the emergency board meeting.”

Marisol nodded slowly, taking the cup of milk for Valentina.

She knew Diego was facing a financial hurricane.

By exposing his paternity, Paulina had not only humiliated him socially but had also triggered a clause in the Villaseñor corporate charter regarding executive conduct and moral integrity.

The sharks on the board of directors were circling for blood.

Suddenly, the private elevator chime echoed through the silent penthouse.

Marisol froze, her breath catching in her throat.

The heavy steel doors slid open with a soft hiss, revealing Diego.

He looked exhausted.

His suit jacket was gone, his silk tie was loosened at the collar, and dark circles shadowed his striking eyes.

Yet, as soon as his gaze landed on Valentina, who was sitting quietly on the white sofa clutching her stuffed rabbit, his expression softened instantly.

He walked slowly across the room, stopping a few feet away from them.

“How are you holding up?” Diego asked, his voice rough and tired as he looked directly at Marisol.

“We survived,” Marisol replied, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

“What happened with the board?”

Diego let out a long, heavy sigh, running a hand through his dark hair.

“They suspended my voting rights temporarily,” he admitted without hesitation.

“Paulina’s father, Senator Robles, pulled strings behind the scenes. They think they can force me out and take over the company assets.”

A heavy silence fell over the room as the implications of his words sank in.

Diego was fighting a war on multiple fronts: corporate betrayal, public scandal, and a custody battle waiting to happen.

He stepped closer to Valentina, kneeling down until he was at eye level with the little girl.

Valentina didn't hide behind her mother this time.

She tilted her head, studied his face with serious curiosity, and slowly held out the golden button she had found earlier that morning.

“For you,” Valentina whispered.

Diego stared at the tiny metal object in her small palm, a thick knot forming in his throat.

He gently closed his fingers over hers, holding the button and her hand together.

“Thank you, little one,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion.

Then he looked up at Marisol, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire.

“We are going to fight them,” Diego said, rising to his full height.

“All of them. But before we strike back, there is something I found in my father’s personal safe this morning that changes everything.”

Marisol’s eyes widened.

“What are you talking about?”

Diego reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a yellowed, water-stained envelope bearing the Villaseñor family crest, its seal broken years ago.

“My father knew about you and me, Marisol,” Diego said grimly.

“And he knew why you were forced to leave four years ago.”
