Chapter 13: The Toluca Safehouse

The armored speedboat cut through the misty waters of the lake before sliding smoothly into a hidden concrete slipway beneath the Toluca safehouse.
Marisol scrambled out of the cabin, still clutching Valentina, who was fast asleep despite the chaos of the night.
Mateo secured the vessel, his breathing heavy as he keyed open the heavy security door leading into the underground facility.
The Toluca safehouse was a high-tech bunker disguised as an abandoned concrete warehouse, completely equipped with medical bays, communication arrays, and iron-clad security.
“You are safe here, Señora Marisol,” Mateo said gently, offering her a warm blanket for the little girl.
“Mr. Diego said he will rendezvous with us as soon as he wraps up loose ends at the Valle de Bravo estate.”
Marisol sat on a plush leather sofa in the briefing room, her hands still trembling as she stroked Valentina’s dark hair.
She stared at the wall-mounted monitors displaying live satellite feeds of the burning mansion.
Diego was still out there, standing in the crossfire of a corrupted political machine.
Suddenly, the secure terminal on the mahogany desk beeped loudly, flashing a red priority alert.
Mateo rushed over, tapping the screen to open an encrypted video transmission.
The face that appeared on the monitor wasn't Diego’s.
It was Paulina Robles.
Her hair was slightly disheveled, but her eyes burned with a manic, unhinged fury as she stared directly into the camera lens.
“Did you really think you won, Marisol?” Paulina’s voice dripped with venom, echoing off the concrete walls of the bunker.
“Diego might have your little financial files, but my father has already filed the federal arrest warrants for corporate espionage and kidnapping.”
Marisol stood up slowly, walking toward the monitor with her jaw set.
“You lost, Paulina,” Marisol said, her voice steady and lethal.
“Your lies are exposed, and your father is about to fall.”
Paulina let out a shrill, hysterical laugh that cut through the speaker like glass.

“We’ll see who’s laughing when Diego’s private jet is intercepted over Mexico City airspace in twenty minutes.”
The transmission abruptly cut to black, leaving the room in a chilling, suffocating silence.
