Chapter 11: Smoke and Mirrors

The thick, acrid scent of cordite and burning cedar hung heavy in the east wing of the Valle de Bravo estate.
Diego moved through the darkened corridors like a phantom, hugging the shadows of the wood-paneled walls.
His boots made no sound against the Persian rugs as he rounded the corner toward his private study.
Through the shattered double doors of the study, the amber glow of a thermal cutting torch illuminated the room in violent flashes of blue and orange.
Two mercenaries stood before the massive steel wall safe, their heavy tactical vests strapped with explosives while a third kept watch by the hallway entrance.
Diego didn't hesitate.
He raised his suppressed rifle, exhaled slowly, and squeezed the trigger twice with clinical precision.
The sentinel collapsed instantly without a single sound, hitting the polished floorboards like a felled oak.
The two men working on the safe whipped around, their assault rifles swinging toward the doorway.
Diego dropped into a tactical slide across the floor, firing a rapid burst that shattered the cutting torch’s fuel tank.
A blinding sheet of white flame erupted inside the study, engulfing the mercenaries in a chaotic wall of fire and concussive shockwaves.
Diego rolled behind a heavy mahogany desk, shielding his face as the secondary shockwave blew the remaining windows out into the misty night air.
When the smoke cleared, the two mercenaries lay unconscious amid the burning debris.
Diego stood up, brushing ash from his tactical vest, and walked slowly toward his private safe.
The heavy steel door was warped from the heat, but the digital backup drive and the physical master files inside were intact.
He reached into the smoking vault, pulled out the reinforced black drive case, and tucked it securely beneath his arm.
Just as he turned to leave, a red laser dot flickered across the wall inches from his face.
Diego froze.
From the shadows of the ruined balcony doorway, a fourth mercenary emerged, his rifle locked directly onto Diego’s chest with a cold, predatory grin.
“End of the line, Villaseñor,” the mercenary sneered, tightening his finger on the trigger.
Suddenly, a loud mechanical whir echoed from the ceiling above them, followed immediately by a sharp crack.
The mercenary’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as a titanium security cable dropped from the automated defense grid, wrapping violently around his throat and hauling him into the ceiling rafters with bone-crushing speed.
Diego looked up as Mateo’s voice crackled through his tactical earpiece, breathless and triumphant.
“Clear on cameras, Mr. Diego! But you need to move—there are twenty more inbound from the perimeter!”
May you like
Diego didn’t waste a single second.
He sprinted down the private service corridor toward the subterranean boat dock, unaware that the true nightmare was only just beginning at the lake’s edge.
