Chapter 8 - Someone Was Already Outside

Daniel's chair hit the wall when he stood.
Detective Pike saw the photograph and immediately reached for his radio.
Victor moved toward the door.
"Where is Ethan?"
"A company guesthouse outside the city."
Victor's face drained of color.
"Who knows that?"
"Rachel, police, and me."
Daniel stopped.
Then he looked at Victor.
"And corporate property records."
Victor understood at once.
If someone inside Mercer Development had access to internal lodging records or property systems, the location might not be secret at all.
Pike ordered nearby officers to secure the guesthouse and move Ethan immediately.
Daniel called Rachel.
She answered on the first ring.
"What happened?"
"Get Ethan away from the windows."
Her breathing changed.
"Why?"
"Someone photographed him through the bedroom window."
Rachel swore and ran down the hallway.
Daniel heard Ethan ask what was wrong.
"Police are coming inside right now," Daniel said.
"They are already outside."
"Make sure it is them before you open the door."
Pike spoke into the phone.
"Rachel, ask for Officer Hayes and Officer Monroe."
Rachel confirmed both names through the door before unlocking it.
The officers entered and began checking the property.
They found a muddy shoe print beneath the bedroom window.
They also found a cigarette butt near the tree line and fresh tire marks on a service road behind the guesthouse.
Daniel could barely contain himself.
"I am going there."
Pike shook his head.
"Not until we know the route is clear."
"That is my son."
"Which is why you do not lead anyone watching you directly to him."
Daniel hated the logic again.
Victor stepped forward.
"Use one of our security vehicles from the underground garage."
Pike looked at him sharply.
"No company security."
"Why not?"
"Because we do not know who inside your company is compromised."
Victor stopped arguing.
Pike arranged a police transport that took Daniel out through a service exit.
By the time he reached the guesthouse, Rachel and Ethan had been moved to a temporary safe location coordinated by investigators.
Daniel was not told the address until he had surrendered his phone for a security check.
The unknown message had arrived through an encrypted forwarding service.
Investigators could not immediately identify the sender.
The photograph contained no useful metadata.
Whoever sent it understood enough about digital evidence to be careful.
At the new safe location, Ethan tried to act brave.
He was sitting at a kitchen table drawing when Daniel walked in.
"Did they catch the man?"
Daniel pulled out the chair beside him.
"Not yet."
"Was it the same man from Aunt Rachel's house?"
"We do not know."
Ethan looked down at his drawing.
It showed three stick figures inside a house surrounded by a thick black line.
Daniel recognized himself, Rachel, and Ethan.
Vanessa was not in the picture.
"Dad?"
"Yes?"
"Why does she hate me?"
Daniel's throat tightened.
"She does not get to decide what you are worth."
"That is not what I asked."
The directness sounded like Claire.
Daniel took a moment before answering.
"I do not know why she did what she did."
Ethan's pencil stopped moving.
"She used to be nice when you were home."
Daniel felt a fresh wave of anger.
"What was she like when I was not home?"
Ethan shrugged the way children do when describing something they have normalized.
"Different."
"How?"
"She did not like when I asked questions."
"What questions?"
"About Mom."
Daniel frowned.
Vanessa had always pretended to respect Claire's memory.
She kept Claire's photographs in Ethan's room.
She encouraged Daniel to speak about her on birthdays.
At least that was what Daniel saw.
"What did she say about your mom?"
Ethan hesitated.
"She said Mom made everything hard for us even after she died."
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
"Did she explain what that meant?"
"She said Mom locked the money."
There it was again.
The trust.
Even in private conversations with an eight-year-old child, Vanessa had been thinking about Claire's estate.
"Did she say anything else?"
"She said if Mom had trusted you more, we would not need all the papers."
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Claire had trusted him deeply.
The trust restrictions were not designed to control Daniel.
They were designed to protect Ethan from exactly the kind of pressure now surrounding him.
Claire's father had insisted on them after watching other family fortunes disappear through remarriages, lawsuits, and predatory advisers.
Daniel had once considered the restrictions overly cautious.
Now he wished they were even stronger.
Rachel entered the kitchen holding Daniel's temporary phone.
"Pike is calling."
Daniel stepped into the hallway.
"What do you have?"
"The lab processed the medication bottle from your trash."
Daniel waited.
"Vanessa's fingerprints are on it."
"Of course they are if it was prescribed to her."
"Correct."
Pike continued.
"Ethan's fingerprints are not."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
Vanessa had suggested Ethan found the bottle near the couch and accidentally took the medication.
If he had handled the bottle as she described, the absence of his prints did not prove anything by itself, but it weakened her story.
"Anything else?"
"The pharmacy confirmed the prescription was filled for Vanessa."
"Did a doctor prescribe it?"
"Dr. Adrian Cole."
Daniel was not surprised anymore.
"Of course."
"There is more."
Pike's voice changed.
"The prescription directions do not match the bottle's remaining contents."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning a significant number of tablets are unaccounted for."
Daniel looked toward Ethan in the kitchen.
"Enough to explain repeated dosing?"
"Potentially, but that conclusion belongs to the medical experts."
Daniel took a breath.
"Have you spoken to Cole?"
"We tried."
"Tried?"
"His clinic says he left yesterday for an emergency family trip."
"Where?"
"They claim they do not know."
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
"Convenient."
"Very."
Pike had also located Marcus Reed, the man who came to Rachel's door.
He had been arrested at a motel seventy miles away.
His attorney was already present.
"Is he talking?"
"Not yet."
"Did he have anything connecting him to Lucas?"
"The rental SUV does that already."
"Anything connecting him to Vanessa?"
Pike paused.
"A screenshot on his phone."
Daniel's pulse increased.
"Of what?"
"A text conversation with a contact saved as V."
"What did it say?"
Pike read only the relevant lines.
The contact wrote that the boy was with Rachel and needed to be brought to the house before Daniel made everything worse.
Marcus asked whether the boy would come voluntarily.
The contact replied that Ethan would if Marcus said his stepmother needed him.
Daniel felt his anger rise.
"That is Vanessa."
"It might be."
"Can you trace the number?"
"It was a prepaid number activated two months ago."
"Location records?"
"We are working on them."
Pike continued.
"Marcus claims he thought this was a family custody dispute."
"He ran from police."
"Yes."
"That is not what innocent couriers do."
"I agree."
Daniel leaned against the wall.
"What about Lucas?"
"His office says he is unavailable."
"Meaning gone."
"Possibly."
Daniel ended the call and returned to the kitchen.
Rachel was helping Ethan finish the drawing.
For a few minutes, Daniel watched them without speaking.
He wanted to believe the worst part was now visible.
He wanted to believe Vanessa and Lucas had created false medical records, drugged Ethan to support them, and targeted the trust for financial control.
That explanation was horrifying enough.
But the photograph from outside the guesthouse suggested the operation was still active even after police became involved.
Someone was still taking risks.
That meant someone still believed there was something to gain.
Later that evening, Victor called Daniel from a secure line.
"I found where the guesthouse location leaked."
"Where?"
"A facilities access report was opened this morning."
"By who?"
"Natalie Wynn."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Victor's assistant had accessed the file less than an hour before the photograph was taken.
"Where is she now?"
"She left the office early."
"Did you stop her?"
"I did not know until ten minutes ago."
Daniel heard frustration in his brother's voice.
"Pike needs the logs."
"Already sent."
"Do not contact Natalie."
"I won't."
Daniel was about to end the call when Victor stopped him.
"There is something else."
Daniel waited.
"I checked her personnel file."
"What about it?"
"Natalie did not apply to Mercer Development through normal recruitment."
"How was she hired?"
"Executive referral."
Daniel frowned.
"Whose referral?"
Victor's answer came slowly.
"Claire's."
Daniel's blood went cold.
"Claire was dead years before Natalie started here."
"I know."
"Then how does her file contain Claire's referral?"
"That is what I am trying to understand."
Daniel thought of the mysterious cloud backup account using Claire's name.
Someone had been invoking his dead wife's identity inside both his home and his company.
The coincidence was too precise to ignore.
Victor lowered his voice.
"Daniel, I think somebody has access to documents Claire created before she died."
Daniel looked toward Ethan.
A sealed envelope waited inside the safe at home.
For Daniel Only.

He suddenly understood that he could not leave it unopened any longer.
