Chapter 7 - The Name Behind Vanessa

Daniel did not respond immediately because Victor's words were too large to accept without evidence.

"What does that mean?"

Victor looked toward the closed office door.

"It means this did not begin when Ethan collapsed."

"I already know that."

"No."

Victor shook his head.

"You know it began months ago."

He looked directly at Daniel.

"I am telling you it began years ago."

Daniel's anger returned.

"Stop speaking in riddles."

Victor pulled open a locked drawer and removed a thin black folder.

He placed it on the desk but kept one hand over it.

"Before I show you this, you need to understand why I did not tell you earlier."

Daniel laughed without humor.

"You had better have an extraordinary reason."

"I thought I could identify who was doing it without putting Ethan at risk."

Daniel's face hardened.

"You failed."

Victor accepted the accusation.

"Yes."

He removed his hand from the folder.

Inside were printed emails, transaction reports, and surveillance photographs.

The top photograph showed Vanessa entering a restaurant eighteen months before Daniel met her.

The man walking beside her was Lucas.

That was not surprising.

The second photograph was.

Vanessa was seated across from a man Daniel knew from business.

Graham Sloane had served as a consultant to Mercer Development for nearly a decade before Daniel fired him for secretly steering contracts toward companies he controlled.

The termination had ended in a bitter lawsuit.

Sloane lost.

Daniel had not seen him in years.

"What was Vanessa doing with Graham Sloane?"

Victor's answer was immediate.

"Planning."

Daniel looked up.

"Planning what?"

"You."

The word landed heavily.

Victor opened another page.

The records showed payments from a Sloane-owned shell company to Vale Consulting during the year before Vanessa met Daniel.

The amounts were large enough to be meaningful but small enough to look like ordinary consulting fees.

"How did you get this?" Daniel asked.

"A whistleblower sent part of it to me nine months ago."

"Who?"

"I still do not know."

"And you said nothing."

"The first package contained only the payments."

Victor pushed another photograph forward.

"Then this arrived."

The image showed Vanessa sitting in a hotel lobby with Graham Sloane two weeks before she supposedly met Daniel at a museum fundraiser.

Daniel remembered that fundraiser clearly.

Vanessa had bumped into him near a silent-auction table and spilled sparkling water on his sleeve.

She had apologized.

They had laughed.

She had seemed embarrassed by his attention.

The meeting had always felt accidental.

Now the photograph told a different story.

"She targeted me."

Victor nodded.

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

"Why did you not tell me when you saw this?"

"Because by then you were married to her."

"That is not an answer."

"I needed proof that the relationship with Sloane was current, not something innocent from her past."

"You could have asked me."

"Would you have listened?"

Daniel wanted to say yes.

He could not.

Nine months earlier, he trusted Vanessa completely.

If Victor had accused her based on old photographs and unexplained payments, Daniel might have believed jealousy or corporate paranoia was driving him.

Victor continued.

"I began monitoring unusual legal and financial activity tied to the company."

"Including Harper Wynn."

"Yes."

"You authorized them."

"I authorized a narrow investigation into suspicious fiduciary planning."

Daniel stared at him.

"The engagement letter names me and Ethan."

"Not the one I signed."

Victor pulled another document from the folder.

His original authorization referred only to a confidential review of executive succession vulnerabilities.

Someone had altered the scope after the fact.

The signatures looked identical because the first page had been reused.

"Why did payments continue?" Daniel asked.

"Because I wanted to see where the requests led."

"You let them build false records about my son."

Victor's face tightened.

"I did not know about the medical records until three weeks ago."

"Three weeks is still three weeks."

"I know."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Ethan had a sedative in his blood."

Victor went completely still.

"What?"

The shock looked genuine.

Daniel told him about the hospital.

He told him about the blue pills.

He told him about Dr. Cole and the false reports.

Victor sat down slowly.

"I thought they were creating paperwork."

"They were creating symptoms."

Victor covered his mouth with one hand.

Daniel had never seen his brother look sick before.

"I should have told you."

"Yes."

"I thought if I confronted you too early, you would confront Vanessa."

"I probably would have."

"And then whoever was behind her would disappear."

Daniel looked at the photograph of Graham Sloane.

"You think Sloane is behind all of this."

"I think he financed the beginning of it."

"Why Ethan?"

Victor opened a corporate ownership chart.

Claire's trust held a substantial block of Mercer Development voting shares.

Daniel controlled them as trustee until Ethan came of age.

Those shares had repeatedly prevented outside investors from forcing major restructuring.

Graham Sloane had spent years trying to break the Mercer family's voting control.

"If Daniel Mercer becomes legally impaired and Ethan is declared incapable," Victor said, "a court fight over control becomes possible."

"Possible is not the same as guaranteed."

"Sloane does not need guaranteed."

Victor tapped the chart.

"He needs chaos."

During that chaos, lenders could panic, minority shareholders could revolt, and a hostile acquisition group could press for control.

Daniel understood the strategy immediately.

It was not about simply stealing Ethan's trust.

It was about destabilizing the people who controlled it.

"Where is Sloane now?"

"Officially, Switzerland."

"Unofficially?"

"I do not know."

Daniel looked at the black folder.

"Why was your laptop at my house?"

Victor's expression changed.

"It was stolen from my car eight months ago."

Daniel stared at him.

"You never told me."

"Company security replaced it quietly because the drive was encrypted and we did not want clients alarmed."

"Did you report it?"

"Internally."

"Not to police?"

"No."

Daniel swore under his breath.

Victor understood the implication.

The stolen laptop had been connecting to Daniel's home network ever since.

Someone had kept it functional enough to mimic Victor's device identity and use his credentials.

"How did they get your credentials?" Daniel asked.

"The device should have been useless without them."

Victor opened another file.

"Unless someone had access to my authentication backup codes."

"Who did?"

"My assistant and me."

"Who is your assistant?"

Victor looked uncomfortable.

"Natalie Wynn."

Daniel recognized the surname.

"Related to Harper Wynn?"

"The founding partner is her uncle."

Daniel gave him a hard look.

"You thought that was not worth mentioning?"

"She joined my office before I knew the firm was involved."

Daniel sat down across from him.

The circle was expanding too quickly.

Vanessa.

Lucas.

Dr. Cole.

Harper Wynn.

Graham Sloane.

Possibly Natalie.

Possibly unknown people inside Mercer Development.

Detective Pike needed everything.

Daniel called him from Victor's office.

Pike arrived forty minutes later with another detective and spent two hours reviewing Victor's folder.

He asked Victor why he had conducted a private investigation instead of contacting authorities.

Victor did not defend the choice.

"I thought it was corporate espionage."

"And when you learned Daniel's family was involved?"

"I kept digging because I wanted proof."

Pike looked at him coldly.

"Your desire for proof may have allowed a child to remain in danger."

Victor lowered his eyes.

"I know."

Pike collected copies of everything.

Then he revealed the first result from Ethan's memory card.

Daniel stopped breathing when the detective placed a laptop on the desk.

"There are six video files."

"From the hidden office camera?" Daniel asked.

"Yes."

"Can we watch them?"

Pike looked at Daniel.

"One of them is relevant enough that you should see it."

He opened a file dated four days earlier.

The video showed Daniel's empty office at night.

At 11:42 p.m., Vanessa entered with Lucas.

She closed the door and placed several papers on Daniel's desk.

Lucas opened a laptop.

Their voices were faint but understandable.

"The doctor says the reports need another incident," Lucas said.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"He already looks exhausted at school."

"Exhausted is not incapacity."

"I am not giving him more."

Lucas laughed.

"You already crossed that line."

Vanessa turned toward him.

"You said it was safe."

"I said it would make him look unstable."

Daniel felt his nails dig into his palm.

Victor looked ill.

On the video, Vanessa lowered her voice.

"What if Daniel notices?"

Lucas answered without hesitation.

"Then Sloane moves up the schedule."

Daniel looked at Pike.

"There."

Pike held up a hand and kept the video running.

Vanessa stepped closer to Lucas.

"I want out after this."

"There is no out."

"That was not the deal."

"The deal changed when you married him."

Vanessa's face tightened.

"I did what you asked."

Lucas leaned toward her.

"Then do one more thing."

He opened a document on the laptop and turned it toward her.

Vanessa read it.

Her face went pale.

"No."

"You do not have a choice."

"I will not do that to Daniel."

Lucas smiled.

"You already have."

The video ended thirty seconds later when Vanessa noticed the hidden camera.

Daniel sat in silence.

The evidence proved Vanessa was involved.

It also proved she was afraid of something Lucas wanted her to do next.

Pike closed the laptop.

"We are enhancing the last frames."

"Can you read the document?"

"Not yet."

Daniel looked at him.

"Find out."

Pike nodded.

"We will."

Daniel's phone buzzed.

A message came from an unknown number.

There was no text.

Only a photograph.

The photograph showed Ethan sleeping inside the guesthouse bedroom.

It had been taken through the window less than ten minutes earlier.
