Chapter 5 - The Man at Rachel's Door

Daniel was moving before Detective Pike finished speaking into his radio.
He grabbed his keys from the desk and ran for the front door.
Pike followed him outside and told a patrol unit to approach Rachel's house without sirens.
Daniel kept Rachel on speaker as he drove.
"Stay away from the windows."
"I am in the hallway with Ethan."
"Lock the back door too."
"Already did."
The doorbell rang again through the phone.
Then came three slow knocks.
The stranger outside did not sound impatient.
That calmness made Daniel more afraid than shouting would have.
"Mr. Mercer asked me to bring Ethan home," the man called.
Rachel's voice sharpened.
"My brother is on the phone with me right now."
Silence followed from the porch.
Daniel pressed harder on the accelerator.
"Rachel, do you see a car?"
She moved carefully toward a side window while keeping her body behind the wall.
"Black SUV."
"Plate?"
"I cannot see it from here."
Pike spoke from the passenger seat.
"Do not try."
Another knock sounded.
"Mrs. Mercer said the boy needs his medication," the man called.
Daniel looked at Pike.
The detective's expression hardened.
"That was a mistake," Pike said quietly.
Daniel understood exactly what he meant.
Only a small number of people knew medication was now central to the investigation.
The stranger had just connected himself to Vanessa without being asked.
Rachel lowered her voice.
"He is walking back to the SUV."
Pike radioed the approaching patrol unit.
"Vehicle is leaving now."
Daniel heard an engine through the phone.
"Rachel, stay inside until police reach you."
"What about you?"
"Five minutes away."
A patrol officer spotted the SUV two blocks from Rachel's street.
Instead of stopping when lights came on, the driver accelerated through a yellow light and turned toward the highway.
Pike received updates over the radio while Daniel fought the urge to chase the vehicle himself.
The detective ordered him not to interfere.
"Your son needs you more than we need another car in that pursuit."
Daniel knew he was right.
They reached Rachel's house less than four minutes later.
Ethan ran into Daniel's arms as soon as the front door opened.
Daniel lifted him even though the boy had become almost too heavy to carry comfortably.
Ethan wrapped both arms around his neck.
"I thought she found me."
"She did not get near you."
"Was that her friend?"
"We are going to find out."
Rachel stood behind Ethan with her phone still in her hand.
Her anger had replaced fear.
"He knew about medication."
Pike nodded.
"We heard."
"Then arrest Vanessa."
"We are building the case carefully."
Rachel stared at him.
"Carefully feels very different when somebody comes to your house for a child."
Pike did not argue.
"You are right."
He stepped into the living room and closed the blinds.
"That is why I am recommending immediate protective measures."
Daniel looked at him.
"Meaning?"
"Ethan does not stay here tonight."
Rachel frowned.
"Why not?"
"Because whoever sent that man knows this address."
Daniel felt Ethan tighten against him.
"Where do we take him?"
Pike suggested a location known only to immediate family and law enforcement.
Daniel owned a small guesthouse on a company property outside the city that very few people associated with him personally.
It was used mostly by visiting executives.
Pike approved the idea after confirming there were no public booking records tied to Daniel's family.
Rachel packed Ethan's clothes while Daniel sat beside his son.
Ethan kept glancing toward the windows.
"Dad, did I do something bad by taking the card?"
Daniel turned toward him.
"No."
"Vanessa said people who steal things go to jail."
"You were trying to protect something important."
Ethan looked at his hands.
"She was really mad when she could not find it."
"Did she ask you about it?"
"She asked if I went in your office."
"What did you say?"
"No."
Daniel hated that his son had been forced to learn deception as a form of protection.
"You do not have to lie to me to stay safe."
Ethan nodded without looking convinced.
Detective Pike's phone rang.
He moved into the kitchen and returned several minutes later.
"The SUV was abandoned in a parking garage."
"The driver?" Daniel asked.
"Gone."
"Registered to who?"
"A vehicle rental company."
Daniel was not surprised.
Pike continued.
"It was rented yesterday using a corporate account."
"Which company?"
"Vale Consulting Group."
Rachel gave a bitter laugh.
"Lucas."
"The company belongs to him," Pike confirmed.
Daniel's anger sharpened into certainty.
Lucas was no longer a shadow behind Vanessa.
He had rented the vehicle used by the man who came for Ethan.
Pike's next call brought another development.
A parking-garage camera had captured the driver leaving the SUV.
The man's face was visible.
Daniel did not recognize him.
Pike sent the image to an identification unit.
Within an hour, a name came back.
Marcus Reed was a former private security contractor with two prior arrests for harassment and unlawful entry.
His phone records would require legal process, but the police already had enough to begin locating him.
Daniel looked at the photograph on Pike's tablet.
"Vanessa hired him?"
"We do not know yet."
"Lucas rented the car."
"That is evidence of a connection, not proof of who gave the instruction."
Daniel understood the distinction even though he hated it.
Before leaving Rachel's house, Pike collected Ethan's memory card as evidence and provided Daniel with a receipt.
A digital forensics specialist would examine it without altering the original data.
Daniel watched the card disappear into an evidence envelope.
That tiny object might contain the first direct record of what Vanessa and Lucas had been doing inside his office.
By late afternoon, Daniel, Rachel, and Ethan were settled in the secluded company guesthouse.
Two uniformed officers remained nearby.
Ethan chose the smallest bedroom because it had a window overlooking a pond.
Daniel made grilled cheese sandwiches while Rachel unpacked groceries.
The normal activity felt almost absurd after the previous twenty-four hours.
Ethan ate half a sandwich before asking a question.
"Is Vanessa going to jail?"
Daniel put down his glass.
"I do not know yet."
"But she gave me the blue vitamins."
"I believe you."
Ethan's eyes lifted.
"You do?"
The question hurt more than Daniel expected.
"Yes."
"Even if she says I lie?"
"Even then."
Ethan looked relieved, but not completely.
Daniel understood why.
Trust did not return because of one sentence.
It had to be rebuilt through what happened next.
Rachel waited until Ethan went to the bedroom before speaking.
"You need to stop blaming yourself long enough to think."
Daniel looked at her.
"I ignored him."
"You missed clues."
"That is a gentle way to say it."
"Then I will say it the hard way."
Rachel folded her arms.
"Vanessa manipulated you because she studied exactly what you would dismiss."
Daniel remained silent.
"That does not erase your responsibility to Ethan."
"I know."
"But guilt is useless if it makes you stupid now."
Daniel almost smiled because Rachel had always been incapable of comforting anyone delicately.
His phone rang before he could respond.
Charles Bennett was calling.
Daniel answered immediately.
"Tell me you found something."
"I found too much."
Charles sounded exhausted.
"I checked county filings, private fiduciary notices, and every document our office received during the last six months."
Daniel moved away from the kitchen.
"And?"
"Someone has been building a paper trail around Ethan."
"What kind of paper trail?"
"Medical consultations, behavioral assessments, private-school incident reports, and financial guardianship drafts."
Daniel felt cold.
"Ethan has never had a behavioral assessment."
"According to the documents, he has had four."
"That is impossible."
"I agree."
Charles continued.
"The reports describe impulsivity, confusion, aggression, memory problems, and episodes of disorientation."
Daniel thought of the days Ethan had been unusually sleepy.
"They were documenting the effects of what they gave him."
"That is one possible interpretation."
"Who signed the reports?"
"A physician named Dr. Adrian Cole."
Daniel had heard the name before.
Vanessa had recommended Dr. Cole several months earlier when she first suggested Ethan might need evaluation.
Daniel had refused because Ethan's pediatrician saw no reason for concern.
"Does Cole actually exist?"
"Yes."
"Where does he work?"
"A private clinic called Northbridge Behavioral Health."
Daniel took a breath.
"Who owns it?"
Charles was quiet for a moment.
"That is where this becomes interesting."
"Tell me."
"The clinic is owned through a holding company."
"Whose holding company?"
"Vale Consulting Group owns forty percent."
Daniel looked toward the bedroom where Ethan was resting.
Lucas had not simply helped Vanessa with documents.
He was financially connected to the doctor whose reports described Ethan as unstable.
"What were they trying to accomplish?"
Charles answered carefully.
"If those records were accepted as genuine, they could support an argument that Ethan may eventually require long-term financial supervision."
"With Vanessa named as guardian."
"That appears to be the direction."
Daniel clenched his jaw.
"Why?"
"Because a guardian with financial authority could influence permitted distributions, vendors, care expenses, and management decisions involving trust-owned assets."
"Not the shares themselves."
"Not easily."
Daniel heard the hesitation.
"Not easily is not the same as impossible."
"No."
Charles took a breath.
"There is another document."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Of course there is."
"A draft petition alleges that you have become medically impaired from stress and alcohol use."
Daniel almost laughed.
"I barely drink."
"The petition includes photographs of you asleep at your desk beside an open whiskey bottle."
Daniel stopped breathing.
He remembered one night three months earlier when Vanessa brought him a drink after a fourteen-hour workday.
He had taken two sips and fallen asleep over a contract.
When he woke, the glass and bottle were gone.
At the time, he assumed she had cleaned the desk.
Now he imagined her standing over him with a camera.
"They were preparing to remove me too."
"It looks that way."
Rachel walked closer when she saw Daniel's face.
"What happened?"
He raised one finger.
"Charles, who drafted the petition?"
"A law firm called Harper Wynn."
"Vanessa's current attorney?"
"No."
"Then who retained them?"
Charles hesitated.
"That is the strangest part."
"What?"
"The engagement letter was signed by someone using authority from Mercer Development."
Daniel's voice went flat.
"Who?"
"Your chief financial officer."
Daniel stared at the wall.
His CFO was not Lucas.
May you like
His CFO was his own older brother, Victor Mercer.
