Chapter 15 - Natalie's Confession

Natalie agreed to meet Daniel only after her attorney and federal investigators approved the conversation.

They met in a secure interview room with Agent Shah present.

Natalie looked younger than Daniel remembered from Victor's office.

Fear had stripped away the polished executive confidence.

"I am sorry," she said before Daniel sat down.

Daniel remained standing.

"For which part?"

Natalie's eyes lowered.

"All of it."

"That answer is too easy."

Agent Shah did not interrupt.

Daniel sat across from Natalie.

"Start with the first thing you did that you knew was wrong."

Natalie swallowed.

"I copied Victor's private correspondence for my uncle."

"Why?"

"Thomas said Victor was preparing a malpractice claim against Harper Wynn."

"Did you verify that?"

"No."

"So you stole confidential company information because your uncle asked."

"Yes."

"Then what?"

"Lena caught me."

"How?"

"She showed me an access log and a camera still of me entering Victor's office after hours."

"Was the camera still real?"

"Yes."

"What did she demand?"

"Small things at first."

Daniel almost laughed because he had heard that pattern too many times.

"Nothing is small when someone is blackmailing you."

Natalie nodded.

She explained that Lena rarely threatened her directly after the first confrontation.

Instead, Lena would place a folder on Natalie's desk or send a screenshot without commentary.

The message was always the same.

I still have what can ruin you.

Natalie began living around that threat.

She stopped taking vacations because she feared missing an instruction.

She avoided Victor because guilt made ordinary questions feel like interrogation.

She started deleting harmless personal messages because she became convinced every device was monitored.

Daniel listened and recognized another version of the same system used against Ethan.

Create fear.

Control interpretation.

Make the target believe obedience is the only way to prevent something worse.

The scale was different, but the logic was not.

That recognition did not absolve Natalie.

It helped Daniel understand why Project Harbor had survived so long without everyone involved feeling like a willing criminal every morning.

Natalie nodded again.

"She asked for travel calendars."

"Victor's?"

"Victor's and yours."

"Then?"

"She asked me to route certain legal invoices under executive continuity planning."

"Harper Wynn."

"Yes."

"Did you know what they were actually doing?"

"Not at first."

"When did you know?"

Natalie's eyes filled with tears.

"When I saw Ethan's name."

Daniel's face hardened.

"And you still kept helping."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Lena showed me a draft criminal complaint accusing me of corporate theft."

"You had committed corporate theft."

Natalie flinched.

"I know."

Daniel leaned back.

"Then fear does not erase your choices either."

"I know."

The repetition reminded Daniel of Vanessa.

Everyone knew after they were caught.

The question was what they had known while Ethan was still in danger.

Natalie continued.

She said Lena used the name Gatekeeper only once in her presence.

Lucas had visited Mercer headquarters after midnight through a loading entrance.

Natalie accidentally saw him leaving Lena's office.

She confronted Lena the next morning.

Lena smiled and said one sentence.

"You do not ask the Gatekeeper who comes through the gate."

Daniel felt a chill.

"Did you ever see Sloane with Lena?"

"No."

"Did you hear them speak?"

"Once."

"How?"

"Lena left her office speaker on during a call."

"What did Sloane say?"

Natalie took a breath.

"He said Vanessa was becoming emotionally unreliable."

Daniel stared at her.

"Anything else?"

"He told Lena to prepare a clean path if Lucas had to finish without her."

"Without Vanessa?"

"That was how I understood it."

Agent Shah leaned forward.

"Did you hear what finish meant?"

"No."

Natalie reached for a paper cup of water.

Her hands shook.

"But two days later, Lena asked me for Daniel's emergency health information and Ethan's school pickup authorizations."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"Why?"

"She said it was for business continuity."

"And you gave it to her?"

Natalie closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Daniel stood so suddenly the chair moved backward.

Agent Shah raised one hand.

"Daniel."

He walked to the far wall and forced himself to breathe.

Natalie began crying.

He turned back.

"My son was not a line on a continuity plan."

"I know."

"Stop saying that."

Natalie covered her face.

Shah waited until Daniel sat down again.

"There is one reason we asked you to hear this directly."

Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

"Natalie remembers a code phrase Lena used when discussing the final stage."

Natalie lowered her hands.

"Family Transfer."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"I did not know until the emergency petition."

"Explain."

"Lena said if Vanessa failed, Family Transfer would move Ethan through an approved adult instead."

Daniel felt his pulse quicken.

"Which approved adult?"

Natalie shook her head.

"She never said."

Daniel thought of Rachel.

Then Victor.

Then Charles.

All three had legitimate relationships with Ethan.

Any one of them could potentially appear safe enough to move him.

The idea made him nauseous.

"Was the person part of the conspiracy?"

"I do not know."

"Could they be used without knowing?"

"Maybe."

Agent Shah slid a photograph across the table.

It showed a page recovered from Lena's private office.

The page contained initials beside potential roles.

R.M. was listed under Family Access.

V.M. was listed under Corporate Leverage.

C.B. was listed under Legal Obstacle.

D.M. and E.M. were listed under Primary Targets.

Daniel pointed to R.M.

"Rachel Mercer."

Shah nodded.

Daniel's first reaction was rage.

His second was confusion.

"Rachel has never helped them."

"We have no evidence she has."

"Then what does Family Access mean?"

Shah answered carefully.

"We think the plan may have been to manipulate her into moving Ethan somewhere under a false emergency."

Daniel remembered the man at Rachel's door.

He had claimed Vanessa sent him.

If that failed, another person could have called Rachel pretending to be police, court staff, or Daniel himself.

The scheme relied less on force than on believable authority.

That was Sloane's pattern.

Make someone trust the instruction.

Then let them carry out the plan themselves.

Daniel asked whether Rachel was safe.

Shah confirmed she was with Ethan and officers at the temporary residence.

"No one moves Ethan without direct verification through Pike and me," Daniel said.

"That is already the rule," Shah replied.

The outside cyber team continued examining Lena's private drives.

Most were encrypted, but one contained browser data and unsent draft messages.

A draft to Lucas read: V is unstable, but D still trusts family channels.

Another read: If court separation holds forty-eight hours, family transfer can proceed.

A third contained a location and time.

Harbor North, Thursday, 11 p.m.

Thursday was tomorrow.

No one knew what Harbor North meant.

Agent Shah believed it might be a meeting place.

Daniel believed it might be connected to Project Harbor.

They searched company property records, marinas, warehouses, and old Sloane investments.

One result stood out.

Mercer Development owned an unused riverfront warehouse known internally as North Harbor Storage.

It had been scheduled for demolition.

The property had no regular staff.

Its security system was maintained by Meridian Administrative Services.

Pike looked at Daniel.

"We are not taking you there."

"I was not going to ask."

"You were thinking it."

Daniel said nothing.

Federal agents placed the warehouse under surveillance.

At 10:38 p.m. Thursday, a van arrived.

The driver was Lucas Vale.

Daniel learned about it through Agent Shah while sitting with Ethan at the temporary house.

"You have him?"

"We are watching."

"Why not arrest him now?"

"Because we want to know who he is meeting."

Daniel hated waiting.

At 10:54, a second vehicle entered the property.

It belonged to Meridian.

The driver was not Lena.

It was a middle-aged technician named Owen Marsh.

He carried two equipment cases into the warehouse.

At 11:07, a third car appeared.

Its windows were dark.

The plate was registered to a rental agency.

A man stepped out.

Agent Shah's voice changed.

"We have visual confirmation."

Daniel stood.

"Sloane?"

"Yes."

Graham Sloane had finally appeared.

Agents waited until all three men entered the warehouse.

Then they moved.

The operation lasted less than five minutes.

Owen Marsh surrendered immediately.

Lucas tried to escape through a rear door and was caught near the river fence.

Graham Sloane was not inside.

Daniel stared at the phone.

"You said you saw him go in."

"We did."

"Then where is he?"

Shah sounded furious.

"There is an old service tunnel beneath the warehouse."

"You did not know that?"

"It was not on the current plans."

"Where does it lead?"

"We are checking now."

Owen Marsh cooperated almost immediately.

He admitted maintaining covert Meridian access for Lena.

He admitted reactivating Claire's legacy account under Lena's direction.

He admitted cloning authentication tokens from Victor's stolen laptop.

He also gave investigators the information they needed most.

Lena was alive.

She was with Sloane.

And the tunnel under North Harbor ended at a private riverside parking structure three blocks away.

By the time agents reached it, Sloane and Lena were gone.

They left behind one item in the abandoned rental car.

A printed photograph of Ethan.

Across the bottom, someone had written tomorrow's date.
