Chapter 16 - The Day Marked Under Ethan's Photograph

Daniel did not tell Ethan about the photograph.
He told Rachel and Victor only after Agent Shah confirmed the threat was credible enough to justify new security measures.
The date was less than eighteen hours away.
No time appeared beside it.
No location appeared.
Only Ethan's face and the date.
Daniel looked at Shah across the dining table.
"What do you think it means?"
"It may be a deadline."
"For what?"
"We do not know."
Pike added another possibility.
"It could be designed to make you panic and move Ethan."
Daniel understood immediately.
Movement created vulnerability.
Sloane's strategy had repeatedly depended on forcing the family to act under pressure.
"Then we stay here."
Shah shook her head.
"Not necessarily."
The temporary house had been secure only because its location was limited.
After the North Harbor raid, investigators had no guarantee Lena had not obtained it through another channel.
"We are moving you to a federal protective location," Shah said.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"Ethan hates moving again."
"I know."
"He is starting to think every bed is temporary."
Shah's expression softened.
"Then tell him the truth about why this move matters."
Daniel did.
He sat on the floor of Ethan's room while the boy packed his puzzle books.
"Are bad people coming here?"
"We do not know."
"Then why are we leaving?"
"Because I would rather move before we know than after we are too late."
Ethan stopped packing.
"Vanessa used to say we were going places because you were busy."
Daniel felt the hidden meaning.
"Did she take you somewhere I do not know about?"
Ethan looked down.
"Twice."
Daniel's pulse increased.
"Where?"
"The doctor building."
"Northbridge?"
Ethan nodded.
Daniel felt anger flare.
The clinic records claimed Ethan had never physically attended, yet Vanessa had taken him there.
"Did you see Dr. Cole?"
"I do not know what he looks like."
"Who did you see?"
"A lady with red glasses."
Daniel immediately told Pike.
Investigators reviewed Northbridge staff photographs with Ethan through a child interviewer rather than questioning him directly.
Ethan identified a clinic administrator named Melissa Grant.
Grant had told investigators she never met Ethan.
That lie changed her status in the case.
Police brought her in for another interview.
Within two hours, she admitted Vanessa brought Ethan to the clinic twice after hours.
No formal appointment was created.
Dr. Cole was present on one visit.
Lucas was present on the other.
Grant claimed she believed the meetings concerned private family therapy.
Then investigators showed her the payment records.
Her story changed.
She admitted receiving bonuses for creating administrative notes that made later reports appear supported by clinic activity.
She also remembered something from the second visit.
Lena Ortiz was there.
Daniel stared at Pike when he heard.
"Lena saw Ethan in person."
"Yes."
"So she was not just managing systems."
"No."
The conspiracy was no longer divided neatly between people who handled documents and people who handled the child.
Lena had crossed both sides.
That made the date on Ethan's photograph even more disturbing.
The family was moved before noon.
The new location was a guarded government residence used for protected witnesses and sensitive temporary placements.
Ethan immediately noticed the cameras.
"Are they watching us?"
Daniel answered honestly.
"The outside doors and property."
"Not my room?"
"Not your room."
Ethan nodded.
"Good."
He chose a room with blue walls and placed Claire's silver star on the nightstand.
Rachel made pasta in the small kitchen.
For three hours, nothing happened.
Then Victor called.
His voice sounded strained.
"Daniel, someone emptied one of the Mercer trust operating accounts."
Daniel stood.
"How much?"
"Three point two million."
"How?"
"Emergency distribution authority."
"I did not authorize anything."
"I know."
"Where did the money go?"
"Meridian Administrative Services."
Daniel almost laughed at the audacity.
"Freeze it."
"Already trying."
The transfer had been initiated before the vendor was cut off and timed for automatic release that morning.
The authorization used Daniel's digital signature and Claire's legacy account as a secondary verification source.
The theft explained part of the date.
Sloane may have expected the money to move that day.
But Daniel did not believe a photograph of Ethan would be needed for a bank transfer.
The threat remained.
Charles Bennett filed emergency fraud notices with the banks and trust custodian.
Federal agents traced the transfer through two domestic accounts before most of it was frozen.
A smaller amount had already moved offshore.
Agent Shah called the financial trace important but secondary.
"Money can be recovered."
Daniel looked at Ethan through the doorway.
"I know what cannot."
At 4:18 p.m., a courier arrived at Mercer Development headquarters with a package addressed to Victor.
Security intercepted it because all deliveries were under enhanced screening.
The package contained no dangerous material.
It contained a child's red baseball cap.
Ethan owned an identical cap.
Daniel felt cold when Victor sent him a photograph.
Inside the cap was a note.
You can protect the boy or the company, but not both.
Daniel forwarded it to Shah.
"This is pressure."
"Yes."
"He wants me to move."
"Probably."
"Or sign something."
Shah considered that.
"Has anyone contacted you with a demand?"
"Not yet."
At 5:02 p.m., the demand arrived.
An encrypted email appeared in Daniel's personal account.
The sender attached a photograph of Claire's bank-box inventory.
Daniel stared at it.
Only a handful of people knew exactly what the box contained.
The message read: Bring the original drive and Claire's letter to the old Mercer boathouse by 10 p.m.
A second line followed.
Come alone if you want tomorrow's date to mean nothing.
Pike read the message and immediately said no.
Daniel looked at him.
"We are not actually sending you alone."
"I know."
"You are not going inside any location without a plan."
"I know."
Shah studied the photograph attached to the email.
"How did they get the bank-box inventory?"
Daniel looked at Charles.
The inventory had been created by Eleanor Price years earlier.
Only Eleanor's office and the bank should have had a copy.
Charles called Eleanor.
She answered from home.
She sounded shocked when he explained.
"My old files were transferred to archival storage when I retired."
"Who manages the archive?"
Eleanor gave the name of a legal records company.
Agent Shah searched it immediately.
The company had been acquired three years earlier by a holding group.
One minority investor was Meridian Administrative Services.
Daniel stared at the connection.
Sloane had not needed spies everywhere.
He had built access into vendors that everyone trusted to handle boring infrastructure.
Records.
Identity systems.
Technology backups.
Routine services nobody looked at until they failed.
The old Mercer boathouse stood on a lake property Daniel's father sold twelve years earlier.
The structure remained abandoned on land now owned by a development company.
Federal agents began surveillance immediately.
No one approached the building before dark.
Daniel prepared a decoy envelope and encrypted drive under Shah's direction.
The real Claire materials remained secured as evidence.
At 9:40 p.m., agents moved Daniel toward the lake in a controlled convoy.
He wore a tracker and an audio transmitter.
Pike sat in the command vehicle.
"You still have time to let an agent carry the package."
Daniel shook his head.
"The email specifically demanded me."
"Which is exactly why I do not like it."
"Neither do I."
At 9:57, Daniel stepped onto the old wooden path leading to the boathouse.
The lake was black beneath the cloudy sky.
The building looked empty.
He carried the decoy envelope in one hand.
"I am at the door," he whispered.
Pike's voice came through the earpiece.
"We see you."
Daniel pushed the door open.
A single battery lantern sat on the floor.
No one else was visible.
A phone beside the lantern began ringing.
Daniel looked toward the hidden agents outside.
"Answer it," Shah said through his earpiece.
Daniel picked up.
Graham Sloane's voice came through clearly.
"Daniel."
Every muscle in Daniel's body tightened.
"Where are you?"
Sloane laughed softly.
"Still asking the wrong question."
"What do you want?"
"Claire's recording."
"Why?"
"Because your wife enjoyed collecting insurance policies against people she did not trust."
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
"Claire was right not to trust you."
"Claire was right about many things."
Sloane's voice remained calm.
"She was wrong about one."
"What?"
"She believed the danger would come from outside the family."
Daniel felt cold.
"What are you talking about?"
Sloane ignored the question.
"Leave the envelope and walk away."
"Not until I know Ethan is safe."
"Ethan is safe right now."
"Right now?"
"That depends on what you do next."
Daniel heard a faint sound behind Sloane's voice.
A door closing.
Then a child crying.
Daniel's blood froze.
"Who is that?"
Sloane said nothing.
Daniel's earpiece erupted with Pike's voice.
"Daniel, Ethan is still secure with Rachel."
Relief hit him for only a second.
Then he understood the trick.
Sloane was playing a recording.
"You do not have him," Daniel said.
Sloane's silence changed.
Daniel continued.
"You want me afraid enough to stop thinking."
The line went quiet.
Then Sloane spoke again.
"Claire taught you eventually."
The call ended.
Agents entered the boathouse immediately.
No one was inside.
The ringing phone was a disposable device wired to a small speaker.
Sloane had never been there.
The entire meeting was another misdirection.
Daniel suddenly understood why.
"Check Ethan."
Pike answered at once.
"He is secure."
"Check Victor."
There was a pause while another unit responded.
"Victor is secure too."
"Charles."
Another pause.
Pike's face changed inside the command vehicle.
Daniel heard it in his voice.
"We cannot reach him."
Daniel's chest tightened.
"Where was he?"
"His office."
Agents were sent immediately.
Charles Bennett's office was empty.
His car remained in the garage.
His phone lay on his desk.
The building camera showed him leaving through a side stairwell at 9:31 p.m.
He was not alone.
The person walking beside him wore a hood and kept their face turned away.
At the bottom of the stairwell, Charles looked directly into the security camera.
Then he did something investigators did not understand at first.
He raised his left hand and touched two fingers to his collar.
Daniel recognized the gesture immediately.
It was an old family signal Claire had invented years ago when she and Charles handled a contentious estate dispute.
It meant one thing.
I am being watched.
May you like
Charles had not disappeared willingly.
