Chapter 18 - Daniel Chose His Son Over the Company

Graham Sloane's planned flight was scheduled to leave at 4:30 p.m.
The private airport sat across the state line, outside the immediate jurisdiction of the local investigators.
Federal agents coordinated the response.
Daniel expected the next update to be simple.
They knew the passport number.
They knew the airport.
They knew the departure time.
Then Agent Shah called at 11:12 a.m.
"The reservation is a trap."
Daniel set down his coffee.
"How?"
"The passenger information was entered from a Meridian-linked travel account after Lena's arrest."
"So Sloane wants us watching the airport."
"That is our assumption."
"Where is he actually going?"
"Unknown."
Daniel almost laughed.
Sloane's most consistent skill was forcing people to concentrate on the wrong place.
The boathouse distracted them from Charles.
The charter flight distracted them from something else.
Daniel looked at Victor.
"What happens today at the company?"
Victor opened his calendar.
"Nothing unusual."
"Look again."
Victor scrolled.
At 3:00 p.m., Mercer Development's board was scheduled to receive an emergency notice from a coalition of minority shareholders.
The meeting had been added that morning.
Victor frowned.
"This was not on my calendar an hour ago."
Daniel felt his pulse increase.
"Who added it?"
"Board secretary."
"Why?"
Victor called her directly.
The answer arrived two minutes later.
A shareholder group claiming to represent twelve percent of voting interests had demanded an emergency meeting to address allegations of executive incapacity, trust instability, and concealed criminal exposure.
Daniel stared at Victor.
"Project Harbor."
The plan had reached the corporate stage despite the court order.
Sloane might no longer be able to seize temporary trust authority, but he could still exploit the scandal he created.
If investors believed Daniel was impaired and the Mercer trust was under criminal investigation, they might demand leadership changes.
The market could react before the truth caught up.
"Who are the shareholders?" Daniel asked.
Victor checked the list.
Several were funds Daniel recognized.
Two had longstanding relationships with Graham Sloane.
One was controlled through a company previously named in Claire's old files.
The coalition had been assembled quietly for years.
Daniel felt an unexpected calm.
At last he understood the full objective.
Sloane did not need to steal Ethan's shares.
He needed to convince everyone else that the Mercer family could no longer be trusted to control them.
Then frightened shareholders would do the rest.
Victor closed his laptop.
"We cancel the meeting."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"Daniel, this is exactly what he wants."
"Then let him watch it fail."
Victor stared at him.
"You cannot go into a board meeting with an active custody case, a fraud investigation, and half the press waiting outside."
"I can."
"They will ask whether you are capable of leading the company."
Daniel looked toward the room where Ethan was working with his counselor remotely.
"Then I will answer them."
Charles joined the meeting by video from home because doctors had ordered him to rest.
He agreed Daniel should attend but warned him not to discuss sealed criminal evidence.
Agent Shah arranged security around the headquarters.
Pike objected to Daniel going in person.
Daniel overruled him only because the threat involved a corporate decision Daniel could not delegate without creating exactly the appearance Sloane wanted.
Before leaving, Daniel spoke to Ethan.
"I have to go to the office for a few hours."
Ethan's face changed.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"What are you thinking?"
Ethan looked down.
"What if something happens while you're gone?"
Daniel sat beside him.
"Rachel stays here."
"I know."
"Federal officers stay here."
"I know."
"And I come back."
Ethan looked at him.
"You always say that now."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"Because I mean it every time."
Ethan nodded, but the fear remained.
Daniel did something he once would have considered unnecessary.
He gave Ethan the exact plan.
He told him where he was going.
He told him who would be with him.
He told him the meeting would likely end before dinner.
He told him that if anything changed, Rachel would explain rather than hide it.
Ethan listened to every detail.
When Daniel finished, the boy looked calmer.
Predictability was becoming a form of safety.
Daniel arrived at Mercer headquarters at 2:31 p.m.
News vans already lined the street.
Someone had leaked the existence of the emergency board meeting.
Reporters shouted questions about Ethan, Vanessa, the trust, and Daniel's fitness to remain chief executive.
Daniel did not answer outside.
He entered through the main doors instead of the private garage.
Victor met him in the lobby.
"You enjoy making entrances at the worst possible time."
"Runs in the family."
They rode the elevator together.
The boardroom was full by 2:55.
Eight directors attended in person.
Four joined remotely.
Outside counsel sat near the wall.
The shareholder coalition's attorney appeared on a large screen.
His name was Martin Keene.
Daniel recognized him from Sloane's old network.
Keene began with a polished statement about fiduciary responsibility.
He expressed concern for Ethan.
He expressed concern for the company.
He expressed concern about stability.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
Then Keene displayed the edited videos of Daniel.
Victor swore quietly.
Daniel remained still.
Keene cited media reports about Vanessa's arrest.
He suggested a family environment in crisis could compromise executive judgment.
He referred to the Mercer trust as legally unstable.
Daniel finally raised a hand.
"That statement is false."
Keene smiled politely.
"The trust is currently subject to court intervention."
"The court intervention strengthened its independence."
Daniel looked around the boardroom.
"As of this morning, extraordinary voting authority is held by an independent institutional co-trustee."
Several directors looked surprised.
Keene stopped smiling.
Daniel continued.
"I cannot unilaterally transfer Ethan's shares."
"That itself suggests a loss of confidence in your judgment," Keene replied.
Daniel nodded.
"Then let me remove the ambiguity."
Victor turned toward him.
Daniel had not told him what he planned next.
"Effective immediately, I am taking a temporary leave from day-to-day chief executive duties until the criminal investigation involving my family is stabilized."
The room erupted in quiet conversation.
Victor stared at him.
"Daniel."
Daniel raised a hand.
"Victor will serve as acting chief executive under the existing succession plan."
Keene looked almost pleased.
"Then you concede the shareholder concern."
"No."
Daniel leaned forward.
"I am denying you the conflict you came here to exploit."
The room went still.
"My son was targeted because people believed I would choose corporate control over his safety."
Daniel looked directly into the camera feeding Keene's screen.
"They were wrong."
Keene's expression tightened.
"This meeting is not about your private family choices."
"That is exactly what your clients made it about."
Daniel continued calmly.
"If the company requires me to neglect my son in order to prove I am fit to lead it, then I am not interested in proving anything."
Victor's face softened.
Several directors nodded.
Daniel placed a prepared resolution on the table.
It formally confirmed Victor as acting chief executive and preserved Daniel's board seat without daily management authority.
It also required an independent committee to review any shareholder action connected to parties named in the criminal investigation.
The board approved it nine to three.
Keene objected.
The objection changed nothing.
Sloane's corporate pressure point collapsed.
The company could no longer be held hostage by a demand that Daniel choose between appearing strong and staying with Ethan.
Daniel had chosen Ethan publicly.
The choice made him harder to manipulate.
At 3:42 p.m., the company's stock briefly dropped after news of Daniel's leave leaked.
By 4:10, it recovered much of the loss after Mercer Development announced the independent review and continuity plan.
Victor leaned back in his chair.
"You planned that before you came in."
"Part of it."
"You could have warned me."
"Would you have tried to stop me?"
Victor considered the question.
"Yes."
"That is why I did not warn you."
Victor laughed for the first time in days.
Then Agent Shah entered the boardroom.
Her face ended the moment of relief.
"We need a private room."
Daniel, Victor, and Pike followed her into a conference room.
Shah placed a tablet on the table.
"Lena is talking."
Daniel sat.
"Why?"
"Because Lucas talked first."
"What does she say?"
"She confirms Sloane designed Project Harbor."
"Does she know where he is?"
"Not now."
Daniel's frustration returned.
"Then what does she know?"
Shah opened an interview transcript.
Lena admitted creating the false Claire trail.
She admitted altering Natalie's personnel file.
She admitted directing Meridian staff to preserve covert access.
She admitted coordinating false trust documents and providing Sloane with security information.
She denied ordering anyone to harm Ethan physically.
Daniel rejected the distinction immediately.
"She knew he was being drugged."
"She admits she knew about the medical pattern after it began."
"Then she helped continue it."
"Yes."
Shah turned a page.
"She also explained the photograph with tomorrow's date."
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"What did it mean?"
"It marked the planned corporate control vote."
"Not a physical threat to Ethan?"
"According to Lena, no."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Relief came mixed with fury.
They had used a child's photograph as a psychological weapon because they knew exactly what Daniel would assume.
"And the baseball cap?"
"Same purpose."
"The message saying I could protect the boy or the company?"
"Designed to force you into an impulsive transfer of authority."
Daniel looked at Victor.
"I almost gave them what they wanted by reacting."
Victor shook his head.
"But you did not."
Shah continued.
"Lena says Sloane has one remaining objective."
"Claire's recording."
"Yes."
"Why is it so dangerous to him?"
Shah looked at Pike.
Then she opened a file investigators had just finished processing from Claire's flash drive.
They had previously reviewed the obvious recordings.
One audio file was mislabeled as a routine vendor meeting.
In it, Claire spoke with Thomas Wynn and Graham Sloane.
The recording was made six years earlier.
Sloane offered Thomas money for confidential trust information.
Thomas accepted.
Then Sloane described a plan to use Meridian Administrative Services as a long-term access point into Mercer systems.
His words were clear enough to transform old suspicion into direct evidence of conspiracy planning.
Daniel listened in silence.
At one point, Claire asked why Sloane was so obsessed with the Mercer family.
Sloane answered with a sentence Daniel had never heard before.
"Because your father destroyed mine, and I learned early that families only understand losses that carry their own name."
Daniel looked up.
"What does that mean?"
Victor knew.
"Dad forced Sloane's father out of a joint venture thirty years ago."
"I thought Sloane built his career independently."
"He did after their family business collapsed."
Shah nodded.
"Financial records suggest Sloane spent decades buying positions around companies connected to the Mercer family."
Daniel felt the motive expand beyond money.
Project Harbor was profitable, but profit was not the only reward.
Sloane wanted Daniel to experience the destruction of family trust before losing corporate control.
He wanted the harm to feel personal.
Agent Shah closed the transcript.
"Now we know what he is protecting."
Daniel looked at the recording file.
"And he knows Claire kept it."
"Yes."
"Then leak that we are moving the original."
Pike stared at him.
"No."
Daniel looked back.
"He keeps moving because we react to him."
"That does not mean we bait him with you."
"I did not say with me."
Shah understood.
"You want to create a controlled transfer of the evidence."
"Yes."
"Make him believe the original is leaving federal custody for authentication."
"Exactly."
Pike looked unconvinced.
"Sloane is not stupid."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He looked toward the city through the conference-room window.
"But he is running out of people he trusts."
That evening, investigators quietly allowed a false logistics notice to appear in a compromised legacy system they believed Sloane could still monitor.
The notice stated that Claire's original flash drive and trust documents would be transported the next morning to a federal evidence laboratory.
The route information was partial but believable.
Only one file contained the exact transfer point.
That file was placed behind an access path previously used by Lena.
At 11:23 p.m., someone opened it.
The login came from a device not seen before.
The device connected through a hotel network downtown.
Federal agents traced the session to a suite registered under a false name.
By the time they entered, the suite was empty.
On the desk sat a newspaper clipping about Daniel's leave from Mercer Development.
Across Daniel's photograph, Graham Sloane had written one sentence by hand.

You finally chose the boy, which means you finally became predictable.
