Chapter 10 - Vanessa's Offer

Vanessa called Daniel from an unknown number at 11:08 that night.
He almost ignored it.
Then he heard her first sentence.
"If Lucas finds me before the police do, I am dead."
Daniel said nothing.
Detective Pike, sitting across the room, immediately started recording through an approved device.
Vanessa's breathing was uneven.
"Daniel, are you there?"
"Yes."
"I need to see you."
"No."
"Please."
"You lost the right to ask me for anything when you put something in Ethan's body that he did not understand."
Vanessa began to cry quietly.
Daniel felt no movement toward comfort.
"I know what I did."
"Do you?"
"Yes."
"Then tell the police."
"I cannot tell them everything over a phone."
Pike mouthed a question.
Daniel repeated it aloud.
"Why not?"
"Because I do not know who is listening."
"You called me."
"Because Sloane wants something you have."
Daniel's eyes moved toward Pike.
"What?"
"Claire's files."
The room became silent.
"How do you know about Claire's files?"
"Lucas told me."
"When?"
"Months ago."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Then the cloud account with Claire's name was yours."
"No."
"Natalie's fake referral was yours."
"No."
"You expect me to believe you now?"
Vanessa inhaled shakily.
"No."
The answer surprised him.
"I expect you to verify everything I say."
Pike nodded slightly.
Daniel asked where she wanted to meet.
Vanessa named an underground parking structure beneath a closed office building.
Pike immediately shook his head.
Daniel agreed with him.
"Not there."
"Then where?"
Daniel looked at Pike.
The detective wrote an address on a pad.
It was a public plaza beside a police substation with cameras covering every entrance.
Daniel gave Vanessa the location.
She protested.
"That is too exposed."
"Then do not come."
She agreed after a long pause.
Pike arranged plainclothes officers around the plaza.
Daniel wore a small recording device under his jacket.
He arrived first and sat at an outdoor table beneath bright lights.
Vanessa appeared twelve minutes late wearing jeans, a dark coat, and no makeup.
Daniel barely recognized her.
She looked exhausted and frightened.
He did not stand when she approached.
"Sit."
Vanessa sat across from him.
Her eyes moved constantly toward the surrounding streets.
"You brought police."
"Of course I did."
"Lucas will see them."
"Then Lucas is closer than you claim."
She looked at him.
"You still think this is only about the trust."
"Start talking."
Vanessa pressed her hands together beneath the table.
"I met Sloane two years before I met you."
Daniel felt no surprise now.
The shock had burned out of him so completely that facts no longer arrived as explosions.
They arrived as weights he had to place carefully beside everything he already knew.
"Victor found the photographs."
Her face changed.
"Victor knows?"
"Enough."
Vanessa closed her eyes briefly.
"Sloane paid Lucas to introduce me to people around your charities."
"Why you?"
"Because I had no public connection to him."
"And because you were willing."
She looked down.
"Yes."
"How much?"
"At first, fifty thousand dollars."
Daniel laughed once in disbelief.
"You built a marriage around fifty thousand dollars?"
"No."
Vanessa's voice broke.
"I built the first meeting around fifty thousand dollars."
Daniel did not let her soften the distinction.
"You married me."
"That was not supposed to happen."
"But it did."
"Yes."
"And after it did, you kept reporting to them."
Vanessa looked directly at him.
"Yes."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Did you ever love me?"
She opened her mouth.
He stopped her.
"Do not answer that because I no longer care."
The words hurt her, and Daniel was surprised by how little satisfaction he felt.
"Tell me about Ethan."
Vanessa's face collapsed inward.
"Lucas said they needed records showing instability."
"So you gave an eight-year-old sedatives."
"He told me the dose was small."
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
"Do not say dose to me as if that makes it better."
Several people across the plaza looked over.
Vanessa flinched.
"I know."
"No, you do not."
Daniel leaned forward.
"He thought I might send him away because you told him I would."
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"I needed him to stop telling you."
"That is your explanation?"
"It is not an excuse."
Daniel's voice became quiet.
"Good, because there is no excuse."
Vanessa wiped her face.
She told Daniel that Sloane had trained her to think in small compromises.
The first lie was only about where she had met Daniel.
The second was only about why Lucas needed a copy of a charity guest list.
The third was only about allowing a technician into the house while Daniel was away.
By the time Ethan became part of the plan, Vanessa had already spent years proving to herself that the next step was not much worse than the last.
Daniel listened without softening.
He understood the mechanism.
He also understood that explanation could become another hiding place if everyone treated gradual corruption as though no one had chosen each step.
"You keep describing a staircase," Daniel said.
Vanessa looked confused.
"Every step still required you to lift your foot."
She looked down again.
"I know."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Then stop telling me how slowly you walked there."
Vanessa wiped her face again.
"The first few times, he only became sleepy."
Daniel's stomach twisted.
"How many times?"
"Seven."
He went still.
The number was worse than he expected.
"Seven times."
"Yes."
"And the day he collapsed?"
Vanessa stared at the table.
"Lucas gave me different tablets."
"You still gave them to him."
"Yes."
"Why did you not call an ambulance when he became weak?"
Her answer took too long.
"Lucas told me not to."
"And you listened."
"I was afraid."
Daniel stared at her.
"Ethan was eight."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I know."
"He was the person allowed to be afraid."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Daniel returned to the question that mattered now.
"What does Sloane want from Claire's files?"
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"An audio recording."
"Which one?"
"I do not know."
"You are lying."
"I am not."
"Then why is it important?"
"Because Sloane says Claire recorded a meeting that could prove he committed fraud years ago."
Daniel thought of the April 12 recording.
That file showed Sloane pressuring Claire, but pressure alone might not be enough to prove a crime.
There could be another file they had not examined yet.
"Why use Claire's name for the backup account?"
Vanessa looked confused.
"What backup account?"
Daniel watched her carefully.
Her confusion looked real.
"Never mind."
"Daniel, there are people inside the company helping him."
"Natalie?"
Vanessa looked away.
"Yes."
"Who else?"
"I never knew their names."
"Convenient."
"Lucas called one of them the Gatekeeper."
Daniel felt a chill.
"What does that mean?"
"Someone who could open systems, change records, and make approvals look legitimate."
"Victor?"
"No."
The answer came instantly.
"How do you know?"
"Because Lucas hated Victor."
"Why?"
"Victor kept finding irregularities they had to explain."
Daniel thought of his brother's private investigation.
For the first time, Victor's silence looked reckless but not necessarily treacherous.
"Who is the Gatekeeper?"
"I do not know."
"Then give me something useful."
Vanessa reached slowly inside her coat.
Several officers shifted around the plaza.
She stopped when Daniel raised one hand.
"It is a flash drive."
She removed a small red drive and placed it on the table.
"Lucas left it in my bag after our meeting at your house."
Daniel did not touch it.
"What is on it?"
"A copy of the document he wanted me to sign."
"The one from the hidden camera video?"
Her eyes widened.
"You have that video?"
"Ethan saved the memory card."
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Daniel saw shame cross her face.
"What did Lucas want you to sign?"
She looked at him.
"A statement saying I saw you give Ethan alcohol."
Daniel's face went cold.
"What?"
"They wanted an incident that would make both of you look unsafe."
"So the plan was to drug Ethan and blame me."
"Yes."
"And you refused because?"
Vanessa whispered the answer.
"Because they wanted me to put something in your drink too."
Daniel felt no relief in her refusal.
"You had no problem doing it to my son."
She lowered her eyes.
"I know."
A car engine revved suddenly at the edge of the plaza.
Pike shouted through Daniel's earpiece.
"Move."
Daniel turned.
A dark sedan jumped the curb and accelerated directly toward the table.
Daniel grabbed Vanessa's arm and pulled her sideways.
They hit the pavement as the sedan smashed through two empty chairs.
Police officers rushed from three directions.
The car clipped a concrete planter and stopped hard against a metal barrier.
The driver jumped out and ran.
Two officers chased him into an alley.
Vanessa lay on the pavement staring at the damaged table.
Daniel pushed himself upright.
"Was that Lucas?"
She shook her head violently.
"I did not see."
Pike reached them and ordered Vanessa moved immediately.
The red flash drive remained beneath the broken table.
An officer secured it with gloves.
Five minutes later, police caught the driver.
He was not Lucas.
He was an employee of a private transport company contracted by Vale Consulting.
Daniel watched Vanessa being placed in protective custody.
She looked back at him once.
"Daniel."
He did not move closer.
"What?"
"They will go after Ethan again."
"They already did."
She shook her head.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
May you like
"Next time they will not come to bring him home."
