Chapter 7 - THE BOY NOBODY MENTIONED

Ruth agreed to meet Mara at a community center, not at my home.
I stayed away because I did not want to become an investigator in my own case.
Later, Mara told me what Ruth had permitted her to share.
Daniel had been fifteen when he worked odd jobs for my father.
One afternoon he was accused of stealing cash from Charles's study.
Police came to the house.
Daniel denied the accusation.
Charles supplied a carefully edited camera clip.
The boy was placed in juvenile detention while the case proceeded.
The charges were eventually dismissed.
But by then Daniel had lost his place at school, his friends, and his trust in adults.
Ruth believed Charles had used the accusation to punish her for refusing to sign a false statement in a business dispute.
She had no proof of that motive.
She had only memories, a damaged recording, and years of grief.
“Is Daniel alive?” I asked Mara.
“Yes.”
“Does he want any part of this?”
“Not yet.”
I understood.
Being wronged does not create a duty to relive the harm for someone else's case.
Meanwhile the evidence against Chloe grew stronger.
A forensic specialist concluded that the video had not been altered before its original upload.
Medical experts found the injury consistent with the movement shown on the recording.
The prosecutor informed Chloe's counsel that assault charges were under consideration.
My family responded by calling a press conference.
Charles stood on the steps of his office building and spoke about forgiveness.
Brenda cried for the cameras.
Chloe described herself as the victim of a misunderstanding.
Then Charles made his largest mistake.
He referred to evidence only the investigating team and the original camera operator were supposed to know about.
A reporter asked how he knew.
Charles stared at the microphones.
The next morning, a warrant was executed at his office for records related to the security system.
I learned about it from the news like everyone else.
That distinction mattered to me.
I wanted justice, not privileged access.
But when Mara called that evening, she sounded shaken.
“Valerie, there was a second copy of the footage.”
“Where?”
“In a folder Charles labeled INSURANCE.”
“Why would he keep it?”
Mara hesitated.
May you like
“Because the folder also contained photographs of Toby taken before the injury.”
