Chapter 10 - THE INHERITANCE HE HID

Margaret Whitmore had been the quiet center of the family when I was young.

She kept peppermint candies in her pockets and listened when the other adults talked over me.

She also founded the first construction business from which my father later built his empire.

I had known the family legend.

I had not known she retained an ownership interest in the land beneath several profitable developments.

An independent estate attorney located a copy of her will in an archived probate file.

It granted me a beneficial interest in a trust established before her death.

The terms required notice when certain assets were sold.

No such notice had ever reached me.

The discovery opened civil questions entirely separate from Toby's injury.

My attorneys insisted on keeping those matters separate.

So did I.

I would not turn the harm to my son into leverage for property.

But Charles had already connected the two.

He sent a new message through his lawyer.

Withdraw your accusations and we can finally discuss what Margaret intended for you.

Mara preserved it.

Then she returned a single response.

All communications should proceed through the appropriate counsel and legal processes.

My father must have hated its plainness.

At home, Toby began physical therapy.

He hated the exercises and sometimes cried in frustration.

I told him bravery could include being angry and tired.

He asked whether his arm would always look different.

The therapist answered carefully and reassuringly without making promises she could not keep.

That night, Toby wanted to know about his great-grandmother.

I told him how she used to fix broken toy cars.

“She'd take them apart,” I said.

“Then she'd make sure all the wheels turned.”

“Could she fix families?” he asked.

I thought of Margaret standing at family dinners while my father talked over her.

“Sometimes people refuse to be fixed,” I said.

“But she was good at seeing what mattered.”

A call arrived after Toby fell asleep.

Ruth wanted my attorney to know that Margaret had once given Daniel a key.

It opened a small storage room at the old construction office.

When Daniel tried the key years later, the building had been sold.

Mara traced the sale.

The property now belonged to a shell company.
