Chapter 16 - THE GOLDEN GIRLS GAMBLE

Chloe's name on the transfer documents did not prove she understood the whole arrangement.

Her counsel immediately claimed she had signed routine paperwork at her grandfather's request.

But the timing raised questions.

She faced a criminal case over Toby's injury.

Her family was preparing disputed property transactions.

And her name appeared beside entities structured to benefit from those transactions.

Investigators did not publicly connect the proceedings.

My attorneys kept them in separate files.

I tried to do the same inside my head.

It was harder when a new voicemail arrived from Chloe.

For the first time she sounded frightened instead of arrogant.

“Aunt Valerie, I didn't know everything,” she said.

“Grandpa said he could make the problem go away.”

A pause followed.

“Please don't tell Mom I called.”

I forwarded the message to Mara without replying.

Chloe had counsel.

Any conversation with me could create misunderstanding, pressure, or disputed testimony.

At the criminal hearing, a defense attorney questioned whether the video represented the full encounter.

The prosecutor responded that additional evidence would be tested under normal evidentiary rules.

No one asked me to deliver a speech.

No judge declared Chloe guilty on sight.

I was relieved by the process even while it moved painfully slowly.

Outside court, a reporter asked what it felt like to see my family exposed.

I said I would not comment on pending proceedings.

Then I added one sentence.

“My son deserves privacy while he heals.”

The reporter looked disappointed.

Toby was not a dramatic prop.

He was a child who still woke with nightmares.

That night, Ruth told Mara that Charles had contacted Daniel directly.

He offered him a substantial payment to sign a statement saying his old accusation was a misunderstanding.

Daniel declined.

He then asked his lawyer to preserve the communication.

Hours later, Daniel reported that someone had entered his garage without permission.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Only a small box of old cassette tapes was missing.

One tape had been kept separately.

Daniel played it for his attorney.

A woman's voice said, “If Charles finds out who signed that paper, none of us will be safe.”

The voice was Margaret's.

And the paper, Daniel believed, was the one carrying my forged signature.
