Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN AT THE HOSPITAL

I remembered little from the first hours after Toby's birth.

There had been exhaustion, medication, fear, and immense relief.

But I remembered a woman who brought me water when my parents failed to arrive.

She wore hospital scrubs and had a gentle voice.

I thought she was a nurse.

Eleanor said she had been working a temporary shift with an emergency transport team.

She heard my surname and asked whether I was related to Charles Whitmore.

When I said yes, she almost told me everything.

Then my father appeared unexpectedly in the doorway.

Eleanor left before speaking.

“I thought he might hurt your life the way he'd hurt mine,” she told Mara.

She declined to elaborate until she had legal advice.

I respected that boundary.

Her history belonged to her.

But she supplied one photograph for verification.

It showed Charles as a younger man standing beside Helen Mercer and a toddler.

He was smiling.

On the back was a handwritten promise to provide for their daughter.

The next day, my father made an astonishing public claim.

He said I had manufactured the hidden-heir story because I wanted his property.

He said any woman claiming to be related to him was part of a conspiracy.

He named Eleanor in a press statement.

I was furious that he had exposed her before she chose to speak.

Eleanor responded through counsel.

She denied taking part in any conspiracy and asked the press to respect her privacy.

Then she authorized one sentence that changed the conversation.

“I have never asked Charles Whitmore for his fortune; I asked him, once, to acknowledge me.”

Toby saw the story on a neighbor's television.

“Do I have another aunt?” he asked.

“Possibly,” I said.

“Would she like my bridges?”

I smiled sadly.

“I think she might.”

That night the independent estate lawyer called with urgent news.

A transfer concerning Margaret's trust had been scheduled for the following morning.

The proposed buyer was a company nobody could identify.

The documents had been signed by an agent acting under an old power of attorney.

The person named as principal was Margaret.
