Chapter 19 - THE DEAL NOBODY EXPECTED

My father's response was immediate.
He filed a statement accusing Beatrice of confusion and emotional instability.
He claimed her recollections could not be trusted.
For decades, she had repeated his version of every family argument.
Now he was preparing to discredit her because she might repeat her own.
Brenda publicly supported him.
Chloe stayed silent.
The criminal prosecution continued toward trial, with plea discussions that I was not entitled to control.
I submitted a victim-impact account through the proper channel describing Toby's pain, fear, and recovery.
I kept legal conclusions out of it.
His experience was enough.
Then Chloe asked to speak with prosecutors through her attorney.
Her counsel said she possessed messages showing that family members coordinated statements after the incident.
The offer did not erase her actions against Toby.
It did mean she might have evidence about what happened afterward.
I was angry when Mara explained that cooperation could affect plea negotiations.
“She's the one who broke his arm,” I said.
“Yes,” Mara replied.
“And the system still has to distinguish what can be proved about each person.”
I understood it intellectually.
Emotionally, it felt like swallowing glass.
Chloe later provided a series of messages.
In one, Charles instructed everyone to use the phrase “lost his balance.”
In another, Brenda warned Chloe not to apologize because it might sound like an admission.
My mother replied that she had already told the police the boy fell.
The messages strengthened the investigation into their alleged coordinated account.
But they also contained something unexpected.
One message from Charles said, “Remember what we agreed about the trust.”
Chloe asked, “Does this mean I get the shares?”
Charles replied, “Only if Valerie stops making trouble.”
The message did not establish every element of a financial offense.
It did show that my father was tying property promises to family obedience.
Later that evening, my mother's lawyer called Mara.
Beatrice had given a detailed statement about the old document.
She alleged Charles directed her to imitate my signature and threatened to leave her penniless if she refused.
She admitted participating anyway.
Then she revealed the detail that frightened me most.
Charles, she said, had a second signed document.
One that had been prepared in case I ever challenged the first.
