Chapter 6 - THE VISITATION TRAP

My mother's petition arrived the following Tuesday.

She was seeking emergency grandparent visitation, claiming that I had abruptly severed Toby from the family he loved.

The documents accused me of exploiting his injury to retaliate against old childhood resentments.

There was no mention of the camera footage.

There was barely a mention of his broken arm.

I read the papers once, then handed them to Mara.

She had already retained separate family-court counsel to ensure that my professional role remained irrelevant to the proceedings.

“No shortcuts,” I told them.

“No private conversations with judges and no assumptions that anyone owes me anything.”

“We wouldn't have it any other way,” Mara replied.

My mother's filing had another purpose.

It forced me to spend time, energy, and money protecting a child who was already hurting.

At the preliminary hearing, I did not sit in robes.

I did not sit behind a bench.

I sat beside my attorney as Toby's mother.

My father avoided my eyes.

Brenda gave a theatrical sob when the judge asked about the family relationship.

Then her attorney suggested that I had coached Toby to accuse Chloe.

The words struck me harder than I expected.

Toby had cried himself to sleep because he feared he would be blamed for the injury.

And now his own relatives were doing exactly that in a courtroom.

The judge requested the medical evidence and the pending investigation materials available through proper procedures.

She entered a temporary order barring unsupervised contact while the matter was reviewed.

It was not a victory parade.

It was a cautious measure designed to protect a frightened child.

Outside, Charles cornered me near the elevator.

“You could have stopped this,” he hissed.

“You filed the petition,” I answered.

“You're humiliating your mother.”

“You're frightening my son.”

He stepped closer.

“You have no idea what happens when people start digging through our family.”

Mara appeared beside us.

“Please direct further communication to counsel.”

Charles smiled thinly.

Then he whispered something meant only for me.

“Ask Ruth what happened to her boy.”

The elevator doors closed before I could answer.

When I told Mara, she went silent.

By morning, we learned that Ruth had once had a son named Daniel.

And that Daniel had vanished from county records after a sealed juvenile proceeding.
