Chapter 1 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE DOOR

The first police cruiser arrived while Sarah was still threatening to break my windows.

I watched through the camera as its headlights swept across her face.

For one extraordinary second, my daughter looked like a frightened child.

Then she saw the uniform and remembered how to perform.

"Officer, thank God," she cried.

"My mother has locked me out of my own family home."

Greg slipped the useless key into his pocket.

The officer asked for proof that either of them lived there.

Sarah pointed at the rosebush beside the porch.

"I planted those with my father."

It was a lie.

Thomas and I had planted those roses on our thirty-fifth anniversary, when Sarah was too busy taking a cruise to attend dinner.

I opened the camera microphone.

"Officer, my name is Margaret Hale. I'm the homeowner. I reported an assault and theft last week."

Sarah spun toward the lens.

"You called the police on your own daughter?"

"I called them after someone tried to kick down my door."

Greg pulled on her sleeve.

But Sarah had already begun her favorite speech about everything she had sacrificed for me.

The officer asked her to lower her voice.

She refused.

Then he asked Greg to remove his hand from his pocket.

I saw something flash in Greg's palm: a thin metal tool that looked nothing like a key.

He dropped it into his suitcase, too late.

The officer noticed.

Another cruiser arrived.

I stayed indoors, exactly as my attorney had advised.

Sarah shouted that I was confused and elderly and needed somebody to take control of my finances.

That made the second officer look toward the camera.

"Ma'am, has anyone been assessing your capacity?" he asked through the intercom.

"Only the woman who needs my credit card," I answered.

Greg stopped pulling at Sarah.

He was now staring at his phone.

His expression changed from irritation to outright terror.

The police separated them for statements.

When Sarah realized they would not let Greg coach her answers, she began to cry.

I thought that was the worst part of the morning.

Then my own phone rang.

It was Attorney Helen Price.

"Margaret," she said, "I need you to listen very carefully. Your husband's sealed file has been opened. And Greg's name is inside it."
