Chapter 9 - PHASE TWO

Tomorrow.

The word on the back of the photograph seemed more dangerous than any direct threat.

Elena placed the picture on the archive table and forced herself not to look away.

The image showed two versions of her.

One stood before the mirror in a pale maternity dress.

The other appeared behind her in crimson velvet.

The second Elena was slightly out of focus.

Just enough to make the photograph look accidental.

Just enough to make anyone who saw it wonder whether the second figure was real.

Daniel scanned the photograph at high resolution.

"The image has been printed recently," he said.

"How recently?" Marcus asked.

"The paper stock is current."

"That doesn't tell us when the picture was taken."

"No."

Daniel enlarged the reflection.

The second Elena's face looked nearly perfect.

But the left ear sat a few millimeters too low.

"Prosthetic," Daniel said.

Elena leaned closer.

"You can tell from that?"

"I can tell something isn't anatomically matching your face."

"Could the whole photograph be generated?"

"Possibly."

"Then we still know nothing."

Daniel looked at her.

"We know someone wants you to believe phase two begins tomorrow."

"Maybe it already began."

Marcus turned toward her.

"What do you mean?"

Elena looked at the envelope.

"The moment we found this, we changed our behavior."

She pointed to the words.

"Whoever left it controls us even if we never see them again."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Psychological pressure."

"Exactly."

Elena folded her arms over her belly.

"They want me exhausted."

"They want Marcus suspicious."

"They want Victoria defensive."

"And they want everyone watching the wrong thing."

Marcus frowned.

"Then what should we watch?"

Elena looked at the archive-room access log.

"Cole."

Daniel immediately began reviewing the doctor's movements.

Adrian Cole had visited Ravenscroft thirty-four times during Elena's pregnancy.

Most visits were documented as medical appointments.

Seven were not.

On those seven dates, he had entered through the service gate rather than the main entrance.

The gate camera showed his car arriving after midnight.

On four occasions, he remained less than twenty minutes.

On three, he stayed more than two hours.

"Why didn't anyone flag this?" Marcus asked.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Your mother placed Dr. Cole on permanent medical clearance."

"Meaning?"

"His access was treated like family access."

Marcus looked toward Victoria.

She had joined them after being summoned from her suite.

For once, she did not object to the investigation.

She looked genuinely unsettled by the photographs.

"Why did he come here at night?" Marcus asked her.

"I don't know."

"You gave him unrestricted access."

"Because your father needed emergency care more than once."

"My father died six years ago."

Victoria's mouth tightened.

"I never thought to revoke it."

"You thought to control Elena's vitamins but not Cole's access?"

The words cut.

Victoria lowered her eyes.

Elena felt no sympathy.

Not yet.

Daniel checked door logs from Cole's overnight visits.

The records were incomplete.

The same seventeen-minute gaps appeared repeatedly.

Sometimes thirteen minutes.

Sometimes twenty-two.

Always during Cole's presence on the property.

"He knows the system," Daniel said.

"Or someone lets him use it," Elena replied.

Victoria looked at her.

"You think that someone is me."

"I think you admitted helping him dose me."

"That is not the same as helping him fabricate surveillance."

"It is enough to destroy any benefit of the doubt you had."

Victoria flinched.

Elena almost enjoyed it.

Then she hated herself for enjoying anything in this situation.

Marcus asked Daniel to contact police.

Daniel advised against making a broad accusation until they had preserved more evidence.

"Cole has political connections," he said.

"And if we walk in with a forged consent form, an unknown compound, and manipulated cameras, his lawyers will say the family is fighting over a medical misunderstanding."

Elena laughed without humor.

"A misunderstanding."

"I'm not saying I agree."

"I know."

She rubbed her temples.

"I'm just tired of hearing what everyone else might call it."

Dr. Hart returned that afternoon with preliminary blood results.

An unidentified metabolite had been found in Elena's sample.

It appeared consistent with the compound inside the recovered capsule.

The concentration suggested repeated exposure rather than a single dose.

"How long will it remain in my system?" Elena asked.

"We don't know enough about the compound."

"Could stopping it suddenly hurt the baby?"

"We are monitoring both of you closely."

"That's not an answer."

Hart did not pretend otherwise.

"No."

Elena appreciated that.

"Could it make me see a person who isn't there?"

"Potentially, yes."

"Could suggestion make that worse?"

"Absolutely."

"Meaning if someone played Victoria's voice while I was under the effect--"

"Your brain could integrate the sound into a visual interpretation."

Elena stared at the table.

That explained part of the dining-room attack.

A real voice through a hidden speaker.

A drug altering perception.

A crimson dress deliberately placed in the room.

A shard of glass planted somewhere Elena would find it.

Her mind could have built the rest.

The explanation was horrifying because it made sense.

It also meant the attacker did not need to physically assault Elena.

They only needed to make Elena assault herself while believing she was defending against someone else.

Marcus seemed to reach the same conclusion.

His face went gray.

"Could someone reliably make her hurt herself?"

Dr. Hart chose her words carefully.

"No one can predict another person's behavior with certainty."

"But they could create conditions that increase risk."

"Yes."

Elena looked at Marcus.

"That was phase one."

No one corrected her.

"Then what is phase two?"

That question remained unanswered until 6:40 p.m.

Daniel received an encrypted email at his estate account.

The subject line contained one word.

TOMORROW.

The message contained a video attachment.

Daniel isolated the laptop from the network before opening it.

The video lasted thirty-eight seconds.

It showed Elena standing at the top of Ravenscroft's main staircase.

She wore the same maternity sweater she was wearing at that exact moment.

In the video, Victoria stood below her.

Elena screamed.

Then she shoved Victoria backward.

Victoria fell down the staircase.

The video ended on the sound of Elena laughing.

No one in the room spoke.

Elena stared at her own face on screen.

"That never happened."

"We know," Marcus said.

"The sweater."

Elena looked down at herself.

It was cream cashmere with a distinctive braided pattern across the sleeves.

She had bought it two weeks earlier.

"How did they know I would wear this today?"

Daniel paused the video.

"Maybe they didn't."

"What does that mean?"

"Maybe the clothing was digitally replaced."

"Can you prove it?"

"Eventually."

"Eventually is not useful if someone sends this to police tomorrow."

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"That is the point, isn't it?"

Daniel nodded.

"Phase two may be fabrication of a violent incident."

Victoria stared at the video.

Her face had lost its usual control.

"They are going to make it appear Elena attacked me."

Elena turned toward her.

"Unless you made the video yourself."

Victoria looked hurt.

"You still believe that?"

"I believe you gave me a substance without my knowledge and then destroyed the bottle after it became evidence."

"I told you why."

"Your reasons do not erase your actions."

Marcus stepped between them.

"Whether my mother is involved or not, this video is a warning."

"Or a script," Elena said.

Everyone looked at her.

"If they want us to believe something happens tomorrow, maybe they need us to put ourselves in the right places."

Daniel understood.

"The main staircase."

"Exactly."

Elena pointed at the screen.

"They want Victoria below it and me above it."

Victoria crossed her arms.

"Then I will remain in my suite."

"No."

Elena surprised herself.

Marcus stared at her.

"No?"

"We already know where they expect us."

She looked at Daniel.

"So we control the room."

Daniel considered it.

"A trap."

Marcus immediately rejected it.

"Absolutely not."

"Marcus--"

"No."

"If we hide, they change the plan."

"Good."

"Then we remain trapped in this house forever wondering what phase two was."

"I would rather wonder than gamble with you and the baby."

Elena's expression hardened.

"Someone has already been gambling with us for months."

"That doesn't mean we play their game."

"It means we stop letting them set every rule."

Daniel intervened.

"We can create a controlled environment without placing Elena in direct danger."

Marcus looked at him.

"How?"

"We let the house appear normal tomorrow."

"Victoria follows her usual schedule."

"Elena remains under close protection."

"We put independent cameras on the staircase, not connected to the estate network."

"No one knows where they are except us."

"And we track every entrance to the service passages."

Marcus looked at Elena.

She knew he hated it.

"I want Dr. Hart here," he said.

"Fine."

"Two guards within sight of you at all times."

"Fine."

"You don't eat or drink anything we didn't open ourselves."

"Already doing that."

Victoria listened with an unreadable expression.

Then she said quietly, "I'll do it."

Elena looked at her.

"Why?"

Victoria met her eyes.

"Because if someone is trying to turn you into me and me into your victim, I would like to know who."

The sentence sounded almost like an alliance.

Elena refused to trust it.

That night, Daniel installed six independent battery cameras around the main staircase.

None transmitted wirelessly.

All recorded locally to encrypted storage.

Marcus personally verified each device.

At 11:40 p.m., Elena stood in the east suite brushing her teeth when Marcus's phone rang.

Daniel's voice came through immediately.

"We have movement."

"Where?"

"West service passage."

Marcus opened the tablet.

A figure in black moved through the corridor.

Not Mrs. Vale this time.

The person carried a garment bag.

Daniel's team followed from both ends.

The figure entered a hidden room behind the old portrait gallery.

Daniel signaled Marcus to stay put.

Elena watched the screen.

The figure removed the garment bag.

Inside was a cream cashmere sweater identical to Elena's.

Then came a pale maternity skirt.

Then a dark wig.

Then a silicone face.

Elena's face.

The figure lifted the mask toward the camera.

Daniel's team rushed the room.

The screen shook.

A door slammed.

Then static.

Three minutes later, Daniel called.

"They got away."

Marcus swore.

"How?"

"There is another passage we didn't know existed."

"Did you get anything?"

"Yes."

Daniel sounded stunned.

"They left the mask."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Anything else?"

"A phone."

"Whose?"

Daniel paused.

"Yours."

Elena looked at the phone in her own hand.

"I'm holding my phone."

"I know."

"Then what did you find?"

May you like

Daniel's answer came slowly.

"A perfect clone."
