Chapter 14 - THE CRIMSON LEDGER

Elena tore a curtain from the small window and pressed the fabric over her nose and mouth.

The red shadow in the corner moved again.

She refused to look directly at it.

"Not real," she whispered.

A woman's laugh echoed behind her.

Elena closed her eyes.

"Not real."

She put one palm flat against the stone wall.

Cold.

Rough.

Solid.

She counted the grooves beneath her fingers.

One.

Two.

Three.

The whisper grew louder.

"Elena."

She focused on the baby's movement beneath her ribs.

Real.

Her own breathing.

Real.

The cloth over her mouth.

Real.

The voice was not.

A pounding sound came from the hidden panel.

"Elena!"

Marcus.

She moved toward the sound.

The room tilted.

She nearly fell.

Then the panel burst inward.

Daniel entered first wearing a respirator.

Marcus followed with another mask over his face.

He reached Elena in three steps.

"I've got you."

"Vent."

Elena pointed.

"Mist."

Daniel looked up and swore.

He radioed the emergency team.

Marcus carried Elena into the study despite her protests.

Fresh air from an opened window hit her face.

Dr. Hart arrived within minutes.

Her anger was visible before she even examined Elena.

"No one leaves the estate," Hart said.

Daniel looked at her.

"Police are already on the way."

"Good."

Hart took Elena's blood pressure and oxygen level.

"Any direct ingestion?"

"No."

"Did liquid touch your skin?"

"No."

"How long were you exposed?"

"Maybe three minutes."

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Where is Celia?"

"Gone."

"Again?"

"The hidden room exits into an old drainage corridor under the gardens."

"Seal it."

"My men are doing that now."

Elena grabbed Marcus's sleeve.

"She admitted Victoria hired her."

Marcus froze.

Victoria stood several feet away.

Her face changed.

"What?"

Elena looked directly at her.

"She said you paid her to make me doubt what I saw."

Victoria went pale.

"Celia said that?"

"Yes."

"She's lying."

"Is she?"

"Yes."

"Did you ever pay her outside her salary?"

Victoria hesitated.

Marcus saw it.

"Mom."

Victoria's eyes filled with panic.

"I paid her bonuses."

"For what?"

"Personal tasks."

"What tasks?"

Victoria looked at Elena.

"I asked her to keep an eye on you."

Elena laughed in disbelief.

"Keep an eye on me?"

"After you began wandering the halls at night--"

"I wasn't wandering."

"At the time, I thought you were."

"You had someone wearing my face in the halls."

Victoria flinched.

"I did not authorize that."

"Then what did you authorize?"

Victoria's silence stretched.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Tell us now."

"I asked Celia to move small things."

Elena stared at her.

"What things?"

"A book."

"A vase."

"A scarf."

"Why?"

Victoria's eyes filled with shame.

"Cole said Elena had become fixated on the idea that objects were changing positions."

"So you actually moved them?"

"He said if she confronted a harmless inconsistency while supervised, we could demonstrate that memory was unreliable and persuade her to accept treatment."

Elena could not believe what she was hearing.

"You tried to gaslight me on purpose."

Victoria looked down.

"Yes."

The word landed like a physical blow.

Marcus turned away from his mother.

"Jesus Christ."

Victoria's voice broke.

"I thought it was therapeutic."

"You thought making a pregnant woman question her memory was therapy?"

"Cole said--"

"Stop saying Cole said."

Marcus shouted so suddenly everyone froze.

"You are seventy years old."

"You ran this estate for decades."

"You sat on hospital boards."

"You managed foundations."

"You do not get to become helpless every time your choices become ugly."

Victoria's face crumpled.

Elena had wanted someone to say exactly that for days.

Hearing it did not bring relief.

It brought grief.

Because Marcus was finally confronting his mother only after Elena had nearly been destroyed.

Detective Bell arrived with a forensic team.

They collected air samples from the hidden room.

The residue matched the unknown neuroactive compound from Elena's capsule closely enough for the laboratory to call it the same chemical family.

A canister was found in a locked ventilation cabinet.

The cabinet key was attached to a ring belonging to Celia.

Inside the cabinet was also a small digital controller programmed with dates and times.

Some corresponded to Elena's reported hallucinations.

One corresponded exactly to the dining-room incident.

The device logs showed remote commands from an encrypted account.

Daniel believed he could identify the source.

Then Bell asked to see the red leather ledger from Arthur's safe.

Daniel handed it over.

Bell photographed each page.

When he reached the last entries, he frowned.

"Daniel."

The security chief stepped closer.

"Yes?"

Bell pointed to a payment.

D. CROSS - MIRROR II SECURITY SUPPORT.

Amount: $90,000.

Elena stared at the line.

Marcus slowly turned toward Daniel.

Daniel looked genuinely stunned.

"That's not real."

Bell's expression became formal.

"Is Daniel Cross your legal name?"

"Yes."

"Have you received payments from any Ravenscroft research account?"

"No."

"Any shell company associated with Cole Biomedical?"

"No."

Bell looked at Marcus.

"I need access to Mr. Cross's financial records."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Daniel has been protecting Elena."

"I understand."

"He found the hidden speakers."

"I understand."

"He set up the independent cameras that cleared her."

Bell nodded.

"And if someone wanted to build trust before controlling evidence, those are exactly the things they might do."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You think I framed myself in a handwritten ledger?"

"I think I have to investigate it."

Elena looked at Daniel.

For days, he had been the one person who refused to label conclusions before evidence supported them.

Now the same standard was being turned on him.

It felt cruel.

It was also fair.

That frightened Elena.

Bell asked Daniel to surrender his estate security credentials temporarily.

Marcus objected.

Daniel did not.

He removed his badge and access token and placed them on the desk.

"Do your job," he told Bell.

Then he looked at Elena.

"Trust evidence, not me."

The words stayed with her.

By evening, police had taken control of the main security room.

Daniel was allowed to remain on the property but not access surveillance systems.

Victoria stayed in her suite under guard.

Marcus remained with Elena.

The estate felt even less safe now that the person who knew its security best had been sidelined.

At seven thirty, Detective Bell received preliminary banking results.

A company called Mirror Consulting LLC had transferred ninety thousand dollars to an account bearing Daniel Cross's name nine months earlier.

The account had been opened online.

It used Daniel's Social Security number.

The money was transferred out two days later to cryptocurrency exchanges.

Daniel denied knowing the account existed.

"Identity theft," Marcus said.

"Maybe," Bell replied.

Elena hated that word now.

Maybe.

Possibly.

Eventually.

The vocabulary of uncertainty had become its own prison.

At eight, Marcus received a message from an unknown number.

A photograph appeared on his screen.

Daniel stood beside Celia in what looked like a hotel lobby.

The timestamp showed four months earlier.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Have you ever met her outside this estate?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

Daniel's face hardened.

"Yes."

Bell examined the image.

"Could be manipulated."

"Could be real," Elena said.

Daniel looked at her.

For the first time, pain crossed his face.

"Yes."

He had told her to trust evidence, not him.

She hated obeying him.

Then Elena noticed something in the photograph.

A mirrored wall behind Daniel and Celia reflected the hotel lobby.

In the reflection, a man stood holding the camera.

Only half his face was visible.

Elena leaned closer.

"Zoom in."

Bell enlarged it.

Marcus went still.

The man taking the photograph was Adrian Cole.

Daniel exhaled.

"He staged it."

Bell looked at the image.

"Maybe."

Daniel almost laughed.

Then Elena saw another figure in the reflection.

Bell asked for Victoria's calendar from the date of the hotel photograph.

Her assistant produced it electronically.

The foundation meeting had ended at two forty-five.

Victoria had no scheduled event until dinner at six thirty.

The photograph was taken during that gap.

"Where were you between three and four?" Bell asked.

Victoria looked at the calendar.

"With Adrian."

Marcus stared at her.

"Doing what?"

"Reviewing research funding."

"Mirror II?"

"I don't remember the project name."

Elena laughed without humor.

"You remember wedding dates well enough to open safes after six years."

Victoria looked at her.

"But not an eighty-thousand-dollar research meeting?"

Victoria's mouth tightened.

"I remember the meeting."

"I do not remember every title Adrian used."

Bell asked whether Celia had been present.

"At the beginning."

"And the man who looked like Daniel?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I never saw him."

Daniel studied the photo again.

"Maybe you weren't meant to."

Elena understood.

The scene might have been staged around Victoria without her realizing the false Daniel was there.

That would let Cole create evidence tying both of them together later.

He had been preparing leverage against his own allies months in advance.

Daniel requested an immediate comparison between the hotel image and Victoria's credit-card activity.

A restaurant charge placed her inside the hotel less than forty minutes later.

That did not prove she saw the staged Daniel.

It did prove she had been there when she first denied it.

Elena watched Victoria read the transaction record.

The older woman's shoulders lowered.

Every denial now cost her credibility she could not recover.

That mattered because soon Elena would need the truth from Victoria more than she needed another apology.

An older woman stood near the elevators.

Silver-blond hair.

Pearls.

Victoria.

Elena turned slowly toward the closed door of Victoria's suite.

The photograph might have been staged.

May you like

But if it was real, Victoria had been present when Cole created evidence against Daniel.

And the date on the image was four months before Elena's first hallucination.
