Chapter 18 - THE WOMAN IN RED

Elena did not run.
Running was what the double expected.
Instead, she stepped backward until the glass table pressed against her hip.
The fake Marcus moved farther into the room.
Up close, the resemblance remained astonishing.
Same dark hair.
Same jawline.
Same height.
Even the small crease beside Marcus's mouth had been reproduced.
But the eyes were wrong.
Not in shape.
In attention.
Marcus always looked at Elena's face first.
Then, since the pregnancy, his gaze dropped almost unconsciously toward her belly.
The man in front of her never looked down.
"Who are you?" Elena asked.
The double smiled.
"Tonight?"
"Your husband."
"Not very convincing."
"You thought Victoria was convincing."
"Only when I was drugged."
His smile faded.
Elena heard faint movement behind the west wall.
Police were supposed to be there.
No one entered.
The Mirror system had cut their communications.
The double moved toward the sideboard.
"Drink the tea."
"No."
"Cole said you would resist."
"Cole says a lot of things."
"And most people eventually do what he wants."
Elena looked at the crimson dress on the chair.
"Did he tell you to put that there?"
The double glanced toward it.
One second.
That was enough.
Elena grabbed the heavy silver serving bell from the table and threw it at the wall mirror.
Glass exploded outward.
An alarm shrieked.
Not the estate alarm.
A battery-operated impact alarm Daniel had hidden behind the mirror before the police cameras were disabled.
The double flinched.
Elena moved toward the terrace doors.
He caught her arm.
She twisted free without fighting for strength.
Dr. Hart had warned her not to engage physically if she could escape instead.
Elena shoved a dining chair between them.
The terrace door would not open.
Locked remotely.
The double came around the table.
Then the dining-room wall burst open.
Daniel and Detective Bell entered from the service passage.
The double ran.
Bell shouted for him to stop.
He vanished through the pantry door.
Two officers pursued.
Daniel reached Elena.
"Are you exposed?"
"No."
"Did you drink anything?"
"No."
"Did he touch you?"
"My arm."
Daniel examined the sleeve without touching it directly.
"We test everything."
Elena nodded.
"Where is Marcus?"
"Annex."
"You're sure?"
Daniel held up a secure body camera feed.
The real Marcus sat beside Dr. Hart under police supervision.
Wedding ring visible.
Elena exhaled.
Then a woman screamed from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
Victoria appeared at the far entrance wearing the crimson velvet dress.
For one irrational second, Elena thought the drug had reached her after all.
Bell raised his weapon.
"Stop."
Victoria stopped.
Her hands were empty.
An officer rushed behind her.
"She was in custody."
Bell stared at him.
"Then how is she here?"
"She isn't."
Elena whispered the answer.
The woman in red looked at Elena.
Then she reached beneath her jaw.
The Victoria mask peeled away.
Celia Morris stood beneath it.
Bell lowered his weapon slightly.
"Hands where I can see them."
Celia raised both hands.
"I'm not armed."
Daniel moved toward her.
"Where is Cole?"
Celia looked toward the pantry.
"Below us."
"Why are you helping now?"
"Because he tried to kill me an hour ago."
"Convenient."
"I know."
Celia looked at Elena.
"He knows the police are here."
"He doesn't care anymore."
"What does he want?"
Celia's face tightened.
"The research archive."
"Why?"
"Because if he cannot save the study, he will erase it."
Daniel's radio returned with a burst of static.
The impact alarm had forced the independent backup network online.
A police officer reported smoke in the basement corridor.
Bell swore.
"Fire?"
Celia nodded.
"Incinerator room."
Marcus arrived from the annex despite orders.
Elena saw him and immediately checked his left hand.
Wedding ring.
Then his eyes dropped to her belly.
Real.
He reached her.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"The baby?"
"Moving."
Marcus closed his eyes with relief.
Then he saw Celia.
Rage crossed his face.
"You."
Celia did not retreat.
"Save it."
"Where is Cole?"
"Trying to burn your father's records."
"Why should we trust you?"
"You shouldn't."
Celia looked at Elena.
"But she should trust the copy I made."
She reached slowly into the crimson dress pocket.
Bell ordered her to stop.
Celia froze.
"A flash drive."
Bell removed it himself.
"What's on it?"
"Everything I could steal from Mirror II."
"Payment instructions."
"Dose schedules."
"Mask orders."
"Audio files."
"Victoria's messages."
"Cole's messages."
"My messages."
"You kept evidence against yourself?" Daniel asked.
Celia smiled bitterly.
"Insurance."
Elena looked at her.
"Did Victoria hire you to impersonate her?"
"Yes."
"Did she hire you to impersonate me?"
Celia hesitated.
"Not at first."
"What does that mean?"
"Victoria paid me to appear at a distance in her clothes."
"Cole paid for the Elena masks later."
"Did Victoria know?"
"Eventually."
Elena's anger returned.
"When?"
"Before the dining-room incident."
Marcus stared at Celia.
"My mother said she didn't."
"Your mother lies when the truth makes her look cruel."
"Cole lies when the truth makes him look criminal."
"I lie when the truth gets me killed."
Celia's honesty was ugly and useful.
Bell ordered officers to take her into custody.
Celia did not resist.
Before they moved her, Elena asked one more question.
"Why did you tell me Victoria paid you only sometimes?"
Celia looked at her.
"Because after a while I stopped knowing who I was working for."
"Victoria wanted you frightened and controllable."
"Cole wanted you broken enough to study."
"Then he wanted you dead enough to silence."
"And Claire wanted proof."
"Everyone used the same hallways."
"Everyone moved the same objects."
"Everyone thought they were the one controlling the story."
Elena felt a strange coldness.
That was why the evidence had seemed contradictory.
It was not one plan.
It was several overlapping plans built on the same victim.
Victoria's manipulation.
Cole's experiment.
Celia's survival.
Claire's covert investigation.
Marcus's buried evidence.
Each person had changed something.
Each had hidden something.
Elena was the only one expected to live inside the confusion without context.
The basement smoke intensified.
Bell ordered evacuation of the upper wing.
Daniel led officers toward the control room.
Marcus wanted to go.
Elena grabbed his arm.
"No."
He looked at her.
"You told me I don't decide for you."
"Correct."
"You don't decide for me either."
She almost smiled despite everything.
"Fair."
Marcus turned to Bell.
"I'm coming."
Bell shook his head.
"You are a civilian."
"I know the underground layout better than your team."
"Daniel knows it."
"Not Arthur's old research room."
Marcus looked at Claire.
"I do."
Claire stared at him.
"You said you never found it."
"I never found the entrance."
"But I know where the room should be."
Bell finally agreed to let Marcus guide them only as far as the secure stairwell.
Elena remained with Dr. Hart and two officers in the annex.
She hated every second of it.
At 12:31 a.m., the fire suppression system activated below ground.
At 12:34, Daniel reported they had found the incinerator room.
At 12:36, they found burned files.
At 12:39, Marcus stopped answering his radio.
Elena stood.
"Where is he?"
Dr. Hart blocked the door.
"Stay here."
"Marcus isn't answering."
"Police are with him."
Daniel's voice came through the radio.
"We lost Marcus near the east junction."
Elena's blood went cold.
"Lost him?"
"A steel fire door dropped between us."
"Can you open it?"
"Working on it."
Elena looked at Claire.
Claire had gone pale.
"What's on the other side of the east junction?"
Claire whispered, "The original Mirror room."
Then the annex television turned on by itself.
Static filled the screen.
Celia asked Bell for one thing before officers took her away.
"Check the lining."
Bell frowned.
"What lining?"
Celia looked down at the crimson velvet dress.
An officer carefully turned back the hem.
Sewn between the layers was a narrow strip of flexible electronics.
A microphone.
A transmitter.
And a tiny vibration speaker.
Elena stared at it.
"The dress itself was wired."
Celia nodded.
"Victoria's original gown was altered months ago."
"Cole could make the voice seem like it came from whoever wore it."
Daniel examined the device.
"Directional transducer."
"That explains why Elena heard whispers even when the room speakers were off."
Elena felt a wave of disgust.
The red dress had never been merely a visual cue.
It had been a portable instrument.
"Did Victoria know?" Elena asked.
Celia looked at her.
"She knew the gown had been modified for the study."
"She said she thought it measured proximity."
"Did you believe her?"
Celia gave a tired smile.
"Belief is expensive in this house."
The officer bagged the dress.
For the first time, the symbol that had haunted Elena was reduced to fabric, wires, and evidence labels.
Before leaving the room, Elena looked once more at the fake Marcus who had been caught by officers.
Without the performance, his resemblance already seemed weaker.
A technician began loosening the prosthetic at his hairline.
Elena turned away before the face came off.
She did not need to see another stranger emerge from someone she loved.
What mattered was that she had recognized the real Marcus without being told.
For the first time, the people creating illusions had failed because Elena trusted observation without surrendering judgment.
Outside the annex, snow had begun falling over Ravenscroft.
Elena watched it through the glass for only a moment.
The estate looked almost peaceful under white branches and dark sky.
She understood now how dangerous appearances could be.
A house could look safe.
A doctor could sound kind.
A mother could call control protection.
A husband could love someone and still fail her.
A frightened mind could misread a room without becoming unworthy of trust.
Elena turned from the window before the silence could become another place for fear to speak.
A live camera feed appeared.
Marcus sat in a chair inside a white room.
His wrists were restrained.
Adrian Cole stood behind him.
Cole looked directly into the camera.
"Elena."
May you like
"You wanted reality."
"Come see how easily it can be rewritten."
