Chapter 19 - THE ORIGINAL MIRROR

Elena stared at the television screen.
Marcus was conscious.
That was the first thing she checked.
His eyes were open.
His chest rose steadily.
A small adhesive sensor had been placed at his neck.
Cole stood behind him in a dark coat.
He looked calm.
Too calm for a man surrounded by police.
"Do not go," Dr. Hart said.
Elena did not answer.
Detective Bell's voice came through the radio.
"We have the feed."
"We're locating the room."
Claire moved toward the monitor wall.
"I know where it is."
"Show us," Bell said.
Claire pulled up an old schematic stored in the hidden server.
The original Mirror room sat beneath Arthur's private office, connected to three service corridors and one utility tunnel.
The room itself had been designed as a controlled observation chamber.
One-way glass.
Audio system.
Independent ventilation.
Emergency generator.
Arthur Ravenscroft had built a behavioral laboratory beneath his home.
Elena felt sick.
"Can Cole dose Marcus from there?"
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
Hart gripped Elena's shoulder.
"That does not mean you should comply."
Cole's voice came through the television again.
"Bring Victoria."
Elena looked at the screen.
"Why?"
Cole smiled.
"Because she deserves to watch the experiment end."
Bell immediately ordered Victoria kept in custody.
Elena thought differently.
"He wants her there because she knows something."
Claire nodded.
"Or because he wants to kill two witnesses at once."
"Either way, we don't give him control."
Elena looked at Bell.
"Can you feed him a fake camera image?"
Bell looked at the technician.
The technician thought for a second.
"If we can isolate his upstream connection."
Claire pointed to a network branch.
"There."
"The old server mirrors camera input through a buffer."
"We can loop it."
Daniel's voice crackled over the radio.
"Do it."
The plan changed.
Cole would see Elena and Victoria leave the annex and enter the underground passage.
In reality, the camera feed would loop after the first corridor.
Victoria would remain with police.
Elena would stop at a protected junction.
A tactical team would approach the Mirror room from the utility tunnel.
Marcus would never know any of this until the door opened.
It was the kind of plan Cole had used against them.
Controlled perception.
A manufactured reality.
This time, Elena knew the script.
Victoria was brought from the police vehicle back into the annex under guard.
Her wrists were cuffed in front of her.
She looked at the live feed of Marcus and went white.
"Adrian."
Elena turned.
"What does he want from you?"
Victoria shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Stop."
Elena's voice remained quiet.
"No more partial truths."
"If there is anything else, say it now."
Victoria looked at Marcus on screen.
Then she closed her eyes.
"There is another contract."
Marcus could not hear her.
Elena could.
"What contract?"
"Arthur gave Cole's father an equity promise."
"If the research produced a commercially useful treatment, Cole Biomedical would receive a permanent share of Ravenscroft Medical."
"Marcus canceled the division before the milestone could be certified."
"Adrian has been trying to restore the contract ever since."
Elena understood.
"The eighty million was not enough."
"No."
"He needed control of the medical division."
"Yes."
"And you were going to give it to him if you controlled the trust votes."
Victoria nodded.
"Yes."
Elena stared at her.
"You sold me for a corporate restoration project."
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
"There is no sentence I can say that makes what I did less monstrous."
For once, she did not say she thought she was helping.
Elena noticed.
"No."
"There isn't."
Bell fitted Victoria with a concealed microphone.
"Cole may try to get you to confess or authorize something."
Victoria almost laughed.
"He already has enough."
"Then give him more."
At 1:07 a.m., Elena and Victoria entered the north-wing stairwell on camera.
Cole watched from the Mirror room.
The feed showed them walking side by side into the basement corridor.
At the first junction, the live picture froze invisibly into a loop.
Elena and Victoria stopped behind a reinforced fire door with Bell.
The tactical team continued through the utility tunnel.
On the television feed, Cole relaxed.
He leaned closer to Marcus.
"See?"
"She always comes when the baby is involved."
Marcus looked at him.
"You're finished."
Cole smiled.
"People said that about your father for twenty years."
"Then he died with everyone still calling him a visionary."
Marcus's face hardened.
"My father was a coward who experimented on people who trusted him."
Cole's smile disappeared.
"Your father understood that fear could be measured."
"He understood money."
"So do you."
"I shut down the division."
"And destroyed thirty years of research because you needed to feel morally cleaner than the man who built your fortune."
Marcus laughed softly.
"This is about revenge?"
"This is about completing what your family paid for."
Elena listened through the remote feed.
Cole's voice had changed.
The professional calm was cracking.
Victoria heard it too.
"He sounds like his father," she whispered.
Bell looked at her.
"Keep listening."
Cole moved to a console beside Marcus.
A syringe sat there.
Elena's stomach tightened.
Hart had warned everyone that direct administration of an unknown compound could be dangerous.
The tactical team was still forty seconds from the door.
Cole looked at the camera.
"Elena, you're close enough now."
"Come in alone."
The loop continued showing Elena walking.
Cole frowned.
"Elena?"
He touched the console.
The fake feed stuttered.
His face changed.
"You learned."
He stood instantly.
"Move now," Bell said into the radio.
The tactical team breached the utility door.
Cole grabbed Marcus and pulled him backward.
Marcus drove his shoulder into Cole's chest.
The chair tipped.
The syringe fell.
Officers entered.
Cole released Marcus and ran through a second door.
Daniel shouted that Cole was heading toward the north stairwell.
The same stairwell where Elena and Victoria waited.
Bell drew his weapon.
"Back."
He moved them behind the reinforced door.
Footsteps thundered in the corridor.
A man appeared at the far end.
Marcus.
Elena's heart leapt.
Then she stopped.
No wedding ring.
Fake.
The double from the dining room was running toward them.
Behind him came another man.
Also Marcus.
Wedding ring visible.
The real Marcus shouted, "Stop him!"
For one surreal second, two identical husbands ran down the corridor.
Victoria gasped.
Elena did not hesitate.
She pointed.
"The first one is fake."
Bell moved.
The double tried to turn.
Officers from the lower corridor boxed him in.
He dropped to the floor and surrendered.
The real Marcus reached Elena.
She checked his hand anyway.
He understood.
"It's me."
"I know."
Then another alarm sounded.
Cole had not been the double.
He was still moving through the passages.
Daniel's radio crackled.
"Cole is heading upstairs."
"Toward where?"
A pause.
"Dining room."
Elena looked at Victoria.
The story was returning to where it began.
They followed police upstairs at a safe distance.
Cole reached the dining room first.
He stood beside the glass table holding the red leather ledger.
A small metal lighter burned in his hand.
Police filled both entrances.
"Put it down," Bell ordered.
Cole laughed.
"You think this book matters?"
"We already copied it."
That was a lie.
Only parts had been photographed before the fire.
Cole did not know that.
His face shifted.
Victoria stepped into the doorway despite Bell's order.
"Adrian."
Cole looked at her.
"There she is."
"The woman who wanted control without blood on her gloves."
Victoria went pale.
"Put the ledger down."
"Why?"
"So you can tell a court I manipulated you?"
"You did manipulate me."
Cole laughed.
"I gave you language for what you already wanted."
"You wanted Elena frightened."
"You wanted her dependent."
"You wanted a judge to call her unstable."
"I simply made your wishes measurable."
Elena stepped into view.
Cole's expression changed.
"And you."
"The successful subject."
"I'm not your subject."
"You were from the first capsule."
"No."
Elena's voice stayed steady.
"I was a person you harmed."
Cole smiled faintly.
"History prefers cleaner words."
"Then history can use yours."
Elena pointed toward Victoria.
"She confessed."
"Celia copied your files."
"Claire is alive."
"Marcus found Arthur's recordings."
"And the police have your compound."
Each sentence stripped something from Cole's face.
His confidence faded.
"You don't control the story anymore."
Cole looked at the ledger.
Then at the lighter.
He dropped both.
For one second, Elena thought he was surrendering.
Then he reached inside his coat.
Bell and three officers moved at once.
Cole was forced to the floor before he could pull out what he had reached for.
It was not a weapon.
It was another vial.
A small clear vial labeled NDX-17B.
Cole laughed from the marble floor.
"You still don't know what you were given."
Elena's blood went cold.
Bell bagged the vial.
"What does B mean?"
Cole looked directly at Elena.
"Ask Marcus."
Marcus stared at him.
"I have no idea."
Cole smiled.
"That's what makes it perfect."
As officers pulled him upright, Elena looked toward the intact glass table.
The crimson dress still lay across the chair.
For the first time, she did not see a body in it.
She saw fabric.
Nothing more.
After Cole was restrained, Bell ordered every person in the dining room photographed exactly where they stood.
No one moved until the scene was documented.
Elena watched flash after flash illuminate the intact glass table.
This time she knew why the record mattered.
The next morning, no one would be able to tell her the room had looked different.
Marcus stood several feet away.
He did not approach until Elena nodded.
"You okay?"
"No."
Marcus accepted the answer.
"Me neither."
Elena looked toward the bag containing NDX-17B.
"Do not let anyone destroy that."
Bell answered before Marcus could.
"It goes to two independent labs."
"Separate couriers."
"Separate chains of custody."
Elena nodded.
The procedure sounded almost ceremonial.
But after the vanished teacup, ceremony had value.
Across the room, Victoria sat under guard.
She stared at the crimson dress now sealed in evidence plastic.
"I chose that gown," she whispered.
Elena looked at her.
"For what?"
"Because red was the easiest color to recognize at a distance."
The admission was small compared with everything else.
It still hurt.
Even the color had been selected for Elena's manipulation.
Then Cole turned at the doorway.
"Elena."
Bell tried to move him on.
Cole raised his voice.
"Your hallucinations were not the experiment."
Elena froze.
May you like
"They were the screening test."
The door closed behind him.
