Chapter 16 - CLAIRE'S ROOM

Marcus could not move.
Claire Rowan sat on the edge of the narrow bed and looked at him as though eight years had collapsed into one second.
Elena stood several feet behind him.
She had imagined Claire as a mystery.
A file.
A photograph.
A name buried inside medical records.
Now she was a living woman in a hidden room beneath Ravenscroft.
"Claire," Marcus whispered.
Claire's expression hardened.
"Don't say my name like you still own the right to it."
Marcus flinched.
Detective Bell stepped forward.
"Ms. Rowan, I'm Detective Aaron Bell."
Claire looked at him.
"Police?"
"Yes."
"Real police?"
Bell showed his credentials.
Claire laughed once.
It sounded exhausted.
"They always show credentials."
Elena understood before anyone else.
"She doesn't know what is real."
Claire looked at her.
The recognition in her eyes was immediate.
"Elena."
Elena's stomach tightened.
"You know me?"
"I've watched you for months."
Marcus stepped forward.
"From here?"
Claire pointed at the wall.
A monitor showed feeds from rooms throughout the estate.
Some were cameras Daniel knew about.
Others were hidden.
One showed Elena's former bedroom.
Another showed Victoria's study.
Another showed the dining room.
The realization made Elena feel physically exposed.
"Who installed these?"
Claire looked toward the ceiling.
"Arthur started it."
"Adrian expanded it."
"Celia maintained it."
"And you?" Bell asked.
Claire's expression changed.
"I learned to use it."
Marcus stared at her.
"How long have you been here?"
"In this room?"
"Yes."
"Three weeks."
Everyone went still.
"Not eight years?" Elena asked.
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"Where have you been?"
"Running."
Bell pulled up a chair.
"Start at Ashbourne."
Claire looked at Marcus.
"He signed me in."
Marcus lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"Do you?"
Claire's voice sharpened.
"Do you know what eleven days feels like when everyone tells you the woman you saw was not there?"
Marcus did not answer.
Elena felt the words in her own body.
Claire looked at her.
"You know."
"Yes."
Something passed between them.
Not friendship.
Recognition.
Claire began her story.
Eight years earlier, Cole had told her she was participating in a sleep and stress study to help with anxiety.
She had signed a consent form.
But the form she signed did not mention Calmera.
It did not mention visual distortion.
It did not mention environmental manipulation.
Her medication was altered without her knowledge.
Then objects began moving.
She heard Victoria's voice from empty rooms.
She saw women in Victoria's clothing at the end of hallways.
Later, she saw someone wearing her own face.
"I told Marcus," Claire said.
Marcus closed his eyes.
"And I didn't believe you."
"You believed me until your father told you belief was dangerous."
Marcus looked at her.
"What?"
"Arthur told you that if you validated my paranoia, I would get worse."
Marcus remembered.
His face showed it.
"Yes."
Claire nodded.
"That was part of the study."
Elena felt sick.
Arthur had not only manipulated Claire.
He had manipulated Marcus into becoming part of the experiment.
"Why were you sent to Ashbourne?" Bell asked.
"Because I found the first control room."
Claire pointed toward the monitors.
"Not this one."
"The old one was beneath Arthur's office."
"I saw recordings of myself."
"I saw staff notes."
"I saw a file labeled MIRROR."
"Then Adrian found me."
"What happened?"
Claire looked at Marcus.
"I picked up a letter opener because I thought he was going to hurt me."
Marcus whispered, "You had a knife."
"A letter opener."
"I know now."
"You knew then if you had looked."
Marcus lowered his head.
Claire continued.
Cole sedated her.
Arthur told Marcus she had suffered a psychotic break.
Victoria supported the decision to send her to Ashbourne.
At the clinic, Cole continued the experiment.
Claire was exposed to audio cues and altered medication.
She became increasingly disoriented.
Then a nurse named Rebecca Hall discovered discrepancies in the drug logs.
Rebecca helped Claire escape.
"So the discharge record was false?" Bell asked.
"Yes."
"And the phone call to Marcus?"
Claire looked confused.
"What phone call?"
Marcus played the old voicemail.
Claire listened to her own voice say she was at the north gate.
Her face drained of color.
"I never made that call."
Marcus stared at her.
"I went to the gate."
"I was already in Vermont by then."
"Your car was at Logan."
"Rebecca drove it there."
"Why?"
"To make them think I left the country."
The airport part had been Claire's escape plan.
The fake voicemail had been Cole's addition.
It lured Marcus back toward Ravenscroft and away from searching the clinic.
"Where did you go after Vermont?" Bell asked.
"Canada for a while."
"Then Oregon."
"Then New Mexico."
"I changed names."
"Worked cash jobs."
"Never stayed anywhere long."
"Why come back?"
Claire looked at Elena.
"Because I saw her wedding announcement."
Elena's skin prickled.
"That was two years ago."
"I started watching from a distance then."
"Why not warn me?"
Claire's expression filled with shame.
"I tried."
"When?"
"Three letters."
"One before your wedding."
"One after your first miscarriage."
"One when I learned you were pregnant again."
Elena turned toward Marcus.
"Did you ever see them?"
"No."
Victoria, who had remained near the doorway under police watch, slowly sat down.
Claire looked at her.
"You did."
Every head turned.
Victoria's face had gone white.
Elena stared at her.
"You intercepted them."
Victoria said nothing.
"Answer me."
"Yes."
Elena felt rage flood through her.
"Why?"
"Because I thought Claire was dangerous."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"There she is."
Victoria looked at her.
"You disappeared for eight years and sent anonymous warnings."
"Because you helped drug me."
"I did not know the extent--"
"You never know the extent."
Claire stood.
"You just sign the checks."
"You just pour the tea."
"You just hire the maid."
"You just call the clinic."
"And every time a woman collapses under what you built, you say you thought you were helping."
Victoria began to cry.
Claire did not stop.
"You are not innocent because Adrian was worse."
The words silenced the room.
Elena felt them settle exactly where they belonged.
Victoria had not planned every escalation.
But she had provided access, money, drugs, staff, and legitimacy.
Without her, Cole could never have embedded himself so deeply in Ravenscroft.
"Why are you in this room now?" Bell asked Claire.
Claire sat down again.
"Three weeks ago, Rebecca called me."
"The nurse who helped you escape?"
"Yes."
"She works in compliance now."
"She found an old Cole Biomedical file with Elena's name."
"I came back."
"How did you get into the estate?"
"The drainage tunnel."
"How did you know about it?"
"I found it eight years ago."
"Did Celia know you were here?"
Claire hesitated.
"Eventually."
"Did she help you?"
"Sometimes."
Elena frowned.
"Celia said she worked for Victoria and Cole."
"She did."
"And you?"
"She began feeding me information after Cole threatened her."
"So whose side is she on?"
Claire smiled sadly.
"Celia's."
That was the most believable answer Elena had heard all week.
"Did you plant the consent form under my door?"
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"Did you take the tea cup from the safe?"
"No."
"Did you install the nursery speaker?"
"No."
"Did you send the anonymous warning call?"
"No."
"Did you write phase two on the photograph?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Elena looked at Daniel.
Even with Claire alive, the scheme still had unresolved hands.
"Who took the tea cup?" Bell asked.
Claire looked at Victoria.
Victoria's face changed.
"No."
Claire nodded.
"I watched you do it."
Marcus turned toward his mother.
"You stole the sample?"
Victoria stood abruptly.
"I was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of what it would show."
Elena stared at her.
"You knew it contained the compound."
"Yes."
"Then why let me send the second capsule to a lab?"
Victoria's mouth trembled.
"Because by then I knew Cole had changed the dose."
"How?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
"He told me."
"When?"
"The night of the dining-room incident."
"Before or after?"
Victoria looked at Elena.
"Before."
Elena felt the room become silent around her.
"You knew that night."
"I knew he had increased it."
"You knew I might hallucinate."
"Yes."
"And you still brought me tea."
Victoria began to cry.
"Yes."
There was no explanation left that mattered.
Elena looked at Marcus.
"Get her away from me."
Bell motioned to an officer.
Victoria did not resist as she was escorted from the room.
At the doorway, she turned back.
"Elena, I never wanted you dead."
Elena held her gaze.
"You just decided how much of me you were willing to risk."
Victoria had no answer.
After she left, Claire looked at Elena.
"There's one more thing."
Elena almost laughed from exhaustion.
"Of course there is."
Claire pointed to the monitor showing the dining room.
"Cole is still inside the estate."
Marcus stood.
"How do you know?"
Claire looked at the live feed.
Claire opened a concealed drawer beneath the monitor desk.
Inside were handwritten notes from the past three weeks.
She had tracked every time someone accessed the Mirror server.
Most sessions matched Celia's movements.
Several matched Cole's visits.
But four occurred while both were confirmed elsewhere.
"Who logged in then?" Daniel asked.
Claire shook her head.
"Remote user."
"From outside the estate?"
"Maybe."
"Can you trace it?"
"Not without the server logs Adrian keeps deleting."
Elena looked at the four dates.
One was the night the sealed teacup disappeared.
Another was the night Mrs. Vale was attacked.
A third was the morning the guardianship petition was revised.
The fourth was tonight.
"So Cole may not be alone," Elena said.
Claire looked at her.
"He has never been alone."
"Arthur had lawyers."
"Technicians."
"Doctors."
"Investors."
"People who never saw subjects as people because they only handled one piece of the process."
Elena looked at the active-session light.
A system built by many hands could survive the arrest of one man.
That thought made the midnight message even more dangerous.
"Because ten minutes ago, someone turned on the old Mirror control system."
A red indicator blinked in the corner of the screen.
REMOTE SESSION ACTIVE.
Then a message appeared.
ELENA.
DINING ROOM.
May you like
MIDNIGHT.
COME ALONE OR MARCUS TAKES THE FINAL DOSE.
