Chapter 5 - THE VOICE IN THE WALL

Marcus did not touch the ventilation grille with his bare hands.

He stood beneath it, staring upward while the final whisper faded into the wall.

Elena watched his face change from shock to something colder.

For two days he had been trying to separate fear from evidence.

Now evidence had spoken directly to him.

"Daniel," Marcus said into his phone.

His voice was almost unnaturally calm.

"Lock the house down."

Elena looked at him.

"Everyone?"

"Everyone."

"Including your mother?"

Marcus met her eyes.

"Especially my mother."

Within minutes, Daniel Cross and two members of his security team arrived in the nursery.

They photographed the silver music box from every angle.

They removed the hidden speaker beneath it.

Then they unscrewed the ventilation grille.

Behind the metal slats ran an old air shaft that had once connected the nursery to the servant corridor.

Someone had threaded a narrow black cable through the wall.

Daniel followed it with a fiber-optic camera.

"There's another device about twelve feet in," he said.

"Can you reach it?" Marcus asked.

"From the passage."

"Go."

Elena stepped forward.

"I'm coming."

Marcus turned immediately.

"No."

"Don't start."

"Elena, we don't know what's in there."

"Exactly."

She pointed toward the vent.

"And I am done sitting in rooms waiting for everyone else to tell me what happened to me."

Marcus hesitated.

Then he nodded.

Daniel led them into the service passage through the library.

Two security officers followed.

The old corridor felt different now that Elena knew someone had recently used it.

Every scrape on the wall looked like a message.

Every footprint seemed deliberate.

When they reached the section behind the nursery, Daniel stopped beside a narrow wooden panel.

It had been painted the same dull gray as the stone.

Most people would have walked past without noticing it.

Daniel pried it open.

Inside was a compact audio transmitter, a battery pack, and a small digital player.

The player contained six sound files.

Daniel read the filenames aloud.

"Infant crying one."

"Infant crying two."

"Female humming."

"Victoria voice one."

"Victoria voice two."

"Elena response."

Elena's skin prickled.

"What is Elena response?"

Daniel pressed play.

A recording filled the corridor.

It was Elena's own voice.

"Please stop."

She recognized the words immediately.

She had said them three nights earlier when Victoria insisted she finish a cup of tea despite nausea.

The recording continued.

"I said stop."

Then came Elena's frightened breathing.

Then a sharp glass-breaking sound.

Marcus looked at her.

"When was this recorded?"

"I don't know."

But Elena did know one thing.

Someone had been collecting pieces of her voice.

Someone had turned ordinary moments into material for a performance designed only for her.

"Play Victoria voice one," she said.

Daniel did.

Victoria's voice emerged from the speaker.

"No one will believe you."

Elena closed her eyes.

Those were the exact words she remembered hearing during the dining-room assault.

Marcus swore under his breath.

"Voice two."

Daniel pressed the next file.

"The baby will be better off without you."

Elena gripped the wall.

Her knees nearly gave out.

Marcus reached for her.

She pulled away.

"I heard that in the dining room."

"I know."

"So it wasn't all in my head."

"No."

The word came quickly this time.

No careful phrasing.

No hesitation.

"No, it wasn't."

Elena looked at the player.

"But I saw her."

Marcus's expression tightened.

"The sound was real."

"And the woman?"

No one answered.

That was the part that still terrified her.

The device proved manipulation.

It did not prove that Victoria had physically entered the room.

It did not explain the shattered table Elena remembered seeing.

It did not explain how she had ended up holding a glass shard that seemed to come from nowhere.

Daniel removed the memory card.

"I'll image this before we touch the files further."

"Who can access this passage?" Elena asked.

"Anyone with a key or enough time to copy one."

"That's not helpful."

"I know."

"What about fingerprints?"

"We'll check."

Marcus looked toward the narrow passage behind them.

"Seal every entrance."

Daniel shook his head.

"Not yet."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because whoever planted this may come back to retrieve it."

Elena understood immediately.

"You want them to think we haven't found it."

"Exactly."

Marcus hated the idea.

She could see it.

"We set cameras," Daniel continued.

"No visible guards."

"And if they come through our bedroom again?"

"I'll cover that entrance separately."

Marcus looked at Elena.

"You and I move to the east guest suite tonight."

"Fine."

That afternoon, Victoria demanded to know why security officers had searched her rooms.

Marcus met her in the drawing room.

Elena insisted on being present.

Victoria stood beside the fireplace wearing ivory cashmere.

She looked insulted rather than afraid.

"You searched my private suite without asking me."

"I own the house," Marcus said.

"That does not give you the right to treat me like a criminal."

"Someone installed speakers inside Elena's nursery."

Victoria's anger vanished.

It was replaced by what looked like genuine shock.

"What?"

Elena watched her closely.

"A recording of your voice told me no one would believe me."

Victoria turned toward her.

"My voice?"

"Yes."

"That is monstrous."

The outrage sounded convincing.

Too convincing.

Marcus held out his hand.

"Daniel needs your laptop, tablet, and phone for forensic imaging."

Victoria stared at him.

"Again?"

"This time all devices."

"Absolutely not."

"Then you can leave the estate."

Elena looked at Marcus.

Victoria did too.

"You cannot be serious."

"I am."

"You would remove your own mother from this house because your wife heard a recording?"

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Because someone is psychologically attacking my wife in our home."

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"And you assume it is me."

"I assume nothing."

"You never had to."

Her voice dropped.

"She arrived and every judgment you once possessed disappeared."

Elena felt the insult land exactly where Victoria intended.

Marcus did not react.

"Your devices."

Victoria held his gaze for several seconds.

Then she placed her phone on the table.

Her tablet followed.

Finally, she walked to a writing desk and removed a slim laptop.

"Take them."

Daniel bagged each item.

Victoria turned toward Elena.

"I hope, for your sake, you find what you are looking for."

"I already found enough."

"No."

Victoria's eyes became almost gentle.

"You found proof someone wants you frightened."

She glanced at Marcus.

"You have not found proof that person is me."

Elena hated that she was right.

At four seventeen, the Providence lab called Daniel.

The blue capsule from the service corridor had been accepted for expedited analysis.

Preliminary composition would be available within twenty-four hours.

Elena wanted to feel relief.

Instead, the anonymous caller's warning returned to her.

The next thing you lose will matter more.

She checked the locks twice before using the bathroom.

She checked every glass before drinking.

She refused all food from the estate kitchen.

Marcus did the same.

By six, he had ordered a small refrigerator delivered to the east suite and stocked it himself with sealed groceries.

Victoria called it theatrical.

Elena called it survival.

At seven thirty, Daniel came upstairs with a preliminary report from the devices found in the nursery.

"The audio files were copied onto the player yesterday afternoon."

"From what computer?" Marcus asked.

"Metadata was stripped."

"Can you recover it?"

"Maybe."

Daniel looked at Elena.

"But one file wasn't stripped completely."

He showed them a hexadecimal record from the memory card.

A user path remained embedded in a thumbnail cache.

MARCUS-RAVENSCROFT\DESKTOP\NURSERY_AUDIO.

Elena stared at the name.

Marcus stopped breathing.

"That's impossible."

Daniel's expression remained careful.

"It came from a Windows account using your name."

"I use a Mac."

"I know."

"Then someone named a computer after me."

"Possibly."

Elena's mind raced.

Someone was not merely trying to frame Victoria.

They were also creating a trail toward Marcus.

That changed everything.

At eight, Daniel placed hidden cameras in the service passage and restored the panel behind the nursery.

At ten, Marcus and Elena moved into the east suite.

They slept with the lights on.

At 1:03 a.m., Daniel's phone alerted him to motion in the passage.

He called Marcus immediately.

"Someone's inside."

Marcus sat up.

Elena was already awake.

Daniel whispered through the phone.

"Don't leave the room."

On the tablet beside the bed, Marcus opened the secure camera feed.

A figure moved through the narrow corridor in darkness.

The person wore black gloves and a hood.

The figure stopped behind the nursery wall.

Daniel replayed Mrs. Vale's silent warning frame by frame.

Her eyes were not focused on the camera at first.

They were fixed on something above and behind it.

Then she noticed the lens.

Then she mouthed the warning.

"She is watching."

Elena leaned closer to the tablet.

"She didn't say Victoria is watching."

Marcus nodded.

"No."

Daniel enlarged the background.

A faint reflection appeared on a metal pipe behind Mrs. Vale.

Not enough to identify a face.

Enough to show a second figure standing farther down the passage.

The figure wore pale clothing.

Elena's breath tightened.

"Can you sharpen it?"

"Not reliably."

"Try anyway."

The enhanced image became grainy.

A pale face appeared.

Dark hair.

A white nightgown.

Elena looked down at herself.

She had worn a white nightgown the previous night.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"You were with me."

"I know."

"The whole time."

"I know."

The realization made Elena colder than any hallucination.

A stranger wearing her shape had been close enough to watch Mrs. Vale discover the camera.

And the stranger had known exactly when to cut the feed.

Then turned directly toward the hidden camera.

Elena's breath caught.

The hood came down.

It was Mrs. Vale.

The housekeeper stared into the lens.

Then she raised one finger to her lips.

May you like

And mouthed three words.

She is watching.
