Chapter 7 - THE LISTENER

The transmitter was still warm when the security chief placed it inside an evidence bag.
Julian stared at it.
“How long has that been there?”
The chief shook his head.
“We need equipment to determine that.”
Marcus looked around the suite.
“Then assume every room is compromised.”
Khloe rested both hands on her stomach.
The idea of someone listening made her feel more violated than she expected.
Her private conversations.
Her doctor’s updates.
Her confrontation with Marcus.
Her mother’s recording.
Everything.
Julian turned toward the chief.
“Shut down wireless access on this floor.”
“Sir, that will affect medical systems.”
“Then isolate this wing.”
“We can’t simply—”
“Call IT.”
“Call the chief medical officer.”
“Do it properly.”
“But do it now.”
The chief nodded.
Khloe watched Julian regain the version of himself she knew.
Decisive.
Controlled.
Powerful.
But now she knew what that strength could become when mixed with fear.
Silence.
Compromise.
A decision made for everyone else.
She would not forget.
Marcus approached her.
“We need to move you.”
“Where?”
“A secure floor.”
Khloe looked at him.
“This is supposed to be a secure floor.”
Marcus stopped.
She was right.
Julian answered instead.
“My private residence.”
“No.”
Both men looked at her.
Khloe almost smiled.
Apparently they still expected her to select whichever protective cage they offered.
“I’m staying in the hospital until my doctor clears me.”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Okay.”
Julian looked less pleased.
But he accepted it.
That was progress.
The digital officer disconnected the monitor from the network.
Elena’s memory card was placed into an offline reader.
The room became suddenly quiet.
Isabella sat near the wall.
Her makeup was gone now.
A nurse had given her a plain hospital blanket to cover the crimson gown.
Without the gala lighting and diamonds, she looked younger.
More exhausted.
Not harmless.
Khloe would not make that mistake.
But human.
Khloe looked at her.
“What did Sofia mean when she said someone approached her first?”
Isabella stared at the floor.
“She received a package.”
“What was inside?”
“A photograph of our father.”
“Which one?”
“His last week at Thorne.”
“He was standing outside a storage facility in Queens.”
Marcus frowned.
“Luca had storage?”
“We didn’t know.”
“What else was in the package?”
“A key.”
Khloe leaned forward.
“To the storage unit?”
“We thought so.”
“Did Sofia go?”
“Yes.”
“What did she find?”
Isabella’s face tightened.
“Nothing.”
Marcus didn’t believe her.
“Nothing?”
“The unit had been cleared.”
“When?”
“Years earlier.”
“Then why send the key?”
“Sofia thought it was a message.”
“What kind?”
“That whoever contacted her knew things about our father we didn’t.”
Khloe remembered Elena’s words.
One place powerful men never bothered to look.
“What kind of storage facility?”
Isabella looked at her.
“Old document storage.”
“Boxes.”
“Paper archives.”
“Nothing digital.”
Julian frowned.
“Powerful men never bothered to look.”
Marcus understood at the same time.
“Paper.”
Khloe nodded.
“Conrad built his world on digital control.”
“Encrypted accounts.”
“Corporate servers.”
“Access logs.”
“Maybe Luca kept everything on paper.”
Isabella shook her head.
“We searched the unit.”
“You said it was empty.”
“It was.”
“Maybe you were looking at the wrong unit.”
Isabella stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
“The photograph.”
“Was the unit number visible?”
“No.”
“Was anything visible?”
Isabella thought.
“A loading bay.”
“Part of the sign.”
“A truck.”
Elaine had been silent.
Now she spoke.
“What sign?”
Isabella looked toward her.
“Something ending in Archive.”
Elaine frowned.
“Could it have been Bell Archive?”
Isabella’s face changed.
“How do you know that name?”
Elaine looked confused.
“I’ve seen it.”
“Where?”
“At the gala.”
Everyone stared at her.
Elaine took out a folder of event vendor documents.
“One of our temporary storage vendors.”
“They delivered historical foundation materials for the anniversary exhibit.”
Marcus took the page.
BELL ARCHIVAL SERVICES.
Queens.
Khloe felt a chill.
“Bell.”
Isabella whispered.
“Sofia’s married name.”
Julian looked at her.
“Your sister owns an archive company?”
“No.”
“She used to work there.”
“When?”
“Years ago.”
“Before our father died.”
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“That’s where Luca kept copies.”
Isabella stood.
“We have to go.”
Security immediately shifted.
Khloe shook her head.
“No one is rushing anywhere.”
Isabella stared at her.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“My mother left instructions.”
“Your father hid evidence.”
“Your sister is running from someone.”
“And every time one of you rushes off alone, another piece disappears.”
Isabella glared.
“What do you suggest?”
“We use our heads.”
Khloe looked at Elaine.
“Who hired Bell Archival for tonight?”
Elaine checked the vendor file.
Her expression changed.
“I didn’t.”
“What?”
“It was added by the hospital development office.”
“Who approved it?”
Elaine flipped pages.
“Richard Hale.”
Marcus cursed quietly.
Conrad’s family-office attorney.
Julian looked toward his security chief.
“Where are the archival materials now?”
“Basement loading.”
“When was the last delivery?”
The chief checked.
“Eight thirty.”
Before the attack.
Before the estate file was stolen.
Before Sofia escaped.
Khloe’s pulse increased.
“What did they deliver?”
Elaine read the manifest.
“Fourteen crates of historical Mercer Foundation records.”
Marcus looked at Julian.
“Why would Conrad’s attorney arrange that?”
Julian’s face hardened.
“He wouldn’t.”
“Unless the crates weren’t for the exhibit.”
Security began reviewing loading dock footage.
The first truck arrived at 8:21.
Two workers unloaded crates.
One man remained inside the cab.
The camera showed only part of his profile.
Marcus leaned closer.
“Freeze it.”
The image sharpened.
Silver hair.
Strong jaw.
Khloe had met him dozens of times.
Conrad Thorne.
Marcus’s father.
Khloe’s chest tightened.
“He was here.”
Marcus looked furious.
“He told me he was in Boston.”
Julian turned toward security.
“Search the building.”
The chief spoke into his radio.
Khloe looked at the loading manifest.
Fourteen crates.
One labeled FOUNDATION PHOTOGRAPHS.
One labeled HISTORICAL DONOR FILES.
One labeled 2009–2015 PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE.
Her mother had chaired the foundation during those years.
Khloe pointed.
“That one.”
Elaine followed.
“Private correspondence.”
Julian nodded.
“Find it.”
Ten minutes later, security reported that thirteen crates remained in the basement.
One was gone.
Khloe already knew which.
PRIVATE CORRESPONDENCE.
Marcus called Conrad.
No answer.
Again.
Voicemail.
Then Marcus received a message.
He stared at it.
Khloe saw his face change.
“What?”
He handed her the phone.
The message contained only one photograph.
A wooden crate.
Open.
Inside were letters tied with blue ribbon.
On top was a handwritten note.
Khloe recognized Elena’s handwriting.
Marcus enlarged the image.
The note read:
LUCA,
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, THE ORIGINAL LEDGER MUST GO TO KHLOE.
NOT JULIAN.
NOT MARCUS.
KHLOE.
Khloe looked up.
A second message arrived.
This time, words.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE REST.
Marcus’s jaw hardened.
“No.”
Khloe stared at the screen.
The sender had not messaged Marcus.
The message had appeared on Khloe’s phone.
Someone had spoofed his notification display through the hospital guest network before it shut down.
Then her own phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
“Hello?”
Conrad Thorne’s voice came through.
Smooth.
Controlled.
Almost affectionate.
“Khloe.”
Marcus stepped closer.
Khloe raised one hand.
“Conrad.”
“I’m relieved you and the baby are safe.”
She felt sick.
“Where is my mother’s file?”
A soft pause.
“You should be asking a different question.”
“Which one?”
“Why did Elena tell Luca not to trust Julian?”
Khloe glanced at her uncle.
Conrad continued.
“You think tonight began with Isabella.”
“It didn’t.”
“You think I want your trust.”
“I don’t.”
Marcus silently mouthed, Don’t believe him.
Khloe ignored everyone.
“What do you want?”
Conrad’s voice lowered.
“The truth.”
She almost laughed.
“From you?”
“Yes.”
“Because the truth Elena buried could destroy both our families.”
“Where are you?”
“Close.”
“Come upstairs.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Julian controls the doors.”
Khloe looked at her uncle.
Conrad continued.
“And because twelve years ago, your uncle did far more than look the other way.”
Julian’s expression changed even though he could hear only Khloe’s side.
Khloe’s stomach tightened.
“What did he do?”
Conrad paused.
“He made the deal possible.”
Julian stepped toward her.
“Hang up.”
Khloe held up a hand.
“What deal?”
“The eighteen million.”
Conrad’s voice was almost a whisper.
“Ask Julian who opened the Mercer account.”
The call ended.
Khloe slowly lowered the phone.
Julian stared at her.
“What did he say?”
Khloe looked directly at him.
“He said you opened the account.”
May you like
Julian did not answer.
That silence was enough to make every person in the room stop breathing.
