Chapter 17 - THE RECORDING

Julian refused to leave the room.
“I want to hear it.”
Khloe studied him.
“You may not like what’s on it.”
“I already don’t like what I remember.”
Richard provided the archive key.
The recording was audio only.
Old.
Grainy.
Two voices.
Conrad.
Julian.
Conrad spoke first.
“You release the escrow account and both companies collapse.”
Julian answered.
“You framed Rossi.”
“I contained a threat.”
“You destroyed a man.”
“He was going to destroy thousands of jobs.”
Julian’s voice became colder.
“If Elena learns what you did—”
“She already suspects.”
“What do you want?”
Conrad laughed.
“Nothing complicated.”
“Keep Mercer silent.”
“And?”
“Complete the logistics acquisition.”
“And Rossi?”
“Let the process handle him.”
Khloe watched Julian.
His face had gone gray.
The recording continued.
Julian said:
“If I agree, you give Elena every original ledger you still have.”
Conrad answered:
“Yes.”
“And Luca does not go to prison.”
“I can influence the prosecutors.”
“You guarantee it.”
“I guarantee he won’t see a cell.”
Julian was silent.
Then:
“Fine.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
There it was.
A deal.
Julian had negotiated with the man who framed Luca.
Isabella stood near the wall.
She looked destroyed.
“My father died anyway.”
Julian looked at her.
“Yes.”
“You made a deal.”
“Yes.”
“You traded his name for the companies.”
Julian’s eyes filled.
“I believed I was keeping him out of prison while Elena collected proof.”
“You believed.”
“Yes.”
Isabella laughed bitterly.
“Everyone believed something useful.”
Julian accepted that.
Khloe asked, “Did Elena know about the deal?”
“Not immediately.”
“When she found out, she nearly removed me from Mercer.”
“Why didn’t she?”
“Because by then Luca’s case had become legally complicated.”
“And because the hospitals were dependent on Thorne logistics.”
Khloe stared.
“So she compromised too.”
“Yes.”
The truth was uglier than a simple villain.
Conrad had committed the fraud.
But Marcus destroyed proof.
Julian made a deal.
Elena delayed.
Margaret stayed silent.
Everyone had helped the lie survive.
Khloe understood something important.
This was how powerful systems protected themselves.
Not through one monster.
Through dozens of reasonable people making one cowardly decision at a time.
She looked at Isabella.
“Your father deserved better.”
Isabella nodded.
“Yes.”
Khloe turned to Julian.
“You’re going to say that publicly.”
Julian stared.
“What?”
“The full truth.”
“Your part.”
“Mom’s part.”
“Marcus’s part.”
“Everything.”
Marcus nodded immediately.
“I will.”
Julian looked at Khloe.
“If I do that, Mercer could collapse.”
Khloe stared at him.
There it was.
The old reflex.
She waited.
Julian closed his eyes.
Then smiled sadly.
“I heard it as soon as I said it.”
Khloe said nothing.
Julian nodded.
“Yes.”
“I’ll tell the truth.”
At noon, Khloe organized what Conrad never expected.
A joint press conference.
Not defensive.
Not sanitized.
No carefully worded denial.
Julian stood before cameras first.
“My decisions twelve years ago contributed to the continued false accusation against Luca Rossi.”
Reporters erupted.
He continued.
“I believed I was protecting employees and preserving a company.”
“I was also protecting myself from consequences.”
“That was wrong.”
Marcus followed.
“I found evidence that could have cleared Mr. Rossi.”
“I destroyed it.”
More shouting.
Marcus did not hide.
“I was twenty-six.”
“I was afraid of my father.”
“Neither fact excuses what I did.”
Isabella watched from backstage.
Tears ran silently down her face.
Khloe stood last.
She did not discuss the attack in detail.
She confirmed the footage existed.
She confirmed the pregnancy trust had been manipulated.
Then she said:
“The truth about Luca Rossi should not depend on whether it helps my family or hurts another.”
“He was wrongfully accused.”
“My mother tried to expose that.”
“She also waited too long.”
“My uncle compromised.”
“My husband stayed silent.”
“And I benefited from a system built on that silence without knowing it.”
She looked into the cameras.
“So today, we end it.”
Mercer Health formally requested that Luca Rossi’s case be reopened and his name cleared.
Thorne directors called emergency meetings.
Conrad’s allies began resigning.
Richard Hale surrendered documents.
Margaret cooperated fully.
By evening, federal investigators executed warrants at Halcyon Management.
Conrad disappeared.
Again.
But this time he had fewer places to go.
At six, Khloe returned to her hospital room.
Her doctor smiled.
“Your baby apparently has no interest in corporate governance.”
Khloe laughed for the first time in twenty-four hours.
“Smart baby.”
The heartbeat remained strong.
Khloe cried quietly when she heard it.
Not from fear.
Relief.
Marcus waited outside.
She allowed him in.
He sat across from her.
Neither knew what came next.
Finally, Marcus removed his wedding ring.
Khloe stared.
He placed it on the table.
“I’m not asking you to decide anything now.”
She said nothing.
“I broke our marriage.”
“Isabella did not do that.”
“My father did not do that.”
“I did.”
Khloe felt tears threaten.
Marcus continued.
“I love you.”
“But I’m starting to understand love does not entitle me to access to your life.”
“So I’m leaving.”
Khloe looked up.
“Where?”
“Hotel.”
“I’ll cooperate with whatever you want.”
“Separation.”
“Divorce.”
“Counseling.”
“Nothing.”
“The baby?”
His voice broke slightly.
“I want to be his father.”
“Or her father.”
“Whatever you allow legally and safely.”
Khloe stared at him.
This was the first truly unselfish thing he had done in months.
Maybe years.
She nodded.
“Go.”
Marcus stood.
At the door, Khloe said his name.
He turned.
“I don’t forgive you.”
“I know.”
“But I saw what you did today.”
Marcus nodded.
“Thank you.”
He left.
Five minutes later, Khloe received a message.
From Sofia.
WE FOUND CONRAD.
Khloe sat up.
A location followed.
Not an airport.
Not a safe house.
Not Thorne Tower.
May you like
The address belonged to a cemetery.
Elena Mercer’s grave.
