Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE DOOR

Marcus Thorne did not move when the security officer pressed play.
Khloe noticed that first.
Not the bloodless tension in his jaw.
Not Isabella Rossi standing fifteen feet away with mascara beginning to run beneath her eyes.
Not her uncle Julian Mercer issuing quiet orders into his phone outside the private hospital suite.
Marcus simply stood there.
Still.
Too still.
The security monitor on the wall glowed between them.
Khloe sat on the edge of the hospital bed with both hands resting protectively across her seven-month pregnant stomach.
A nurse had checked the baby twice.
The heartbeat was strong.
There were no signs of immediate danger.
Those words should have comforted her.
They didn’t.
Because the man she had been married to for six years stood three feet away looking more frightened by a video than he had looked when he found his pregnant wife on the floor.
Elaine Parker remained near the door.
The event coordinator had removed her headset.
Her face was pale.
Nobody downstairs at the charity gala knew what had happened yet.
Three hundred wealthy donors were still drinking champagne beneath chandeliers.
The string quartet was probably still playing.
Photographers were still standing beside the Mercer Children’s Hospital backdrop.
The world downstairs was continuing as though nothing had changed.
Up here, Khloe knew her marriage might already be over.
The security officer glanced at Julian.
“Sir?”
Julian gave a single nod.
“Play it.”
Marcus finally spoke.
“No.”
Everyone looked at him.
Khloe felt something inside her go cold.
Julian lowered his phone.
“What did you say?”
Marcus stared at the monitor.
“I said wait.”
Julian’s expression hardened.
“You walked into this room and found my niece on the floor.”
He pointed toward Isabella.
“You found that woman standing over her.”
“Now there is footage showing exactly what happened.”
“And you want us to wait?”
Marcus turned toward him.
“That isn’t what I mean.”
“Then explain it.”
Marcus didn’t.
That silence was worse than any answer.
Khloe had spent months teaching herself not to ask questions.
Why was Marcus suddenly traveling twice as often?
Why did he keep turning his phone facedown during dinner?
Why had Isabella started appearing at charity events that had nothing to do with her foundation?
Why did Marcus become irritated whenever Khloe mentioned her?
Why had Isabella once walked out of Marcus’s private office at midnight while fastening one of her earrings?
Marcus had explained that one easily.
She had been discussing a donor issue.
Khloe had believed him.
Or maybe she had wanted to.
There was a difference.
The security officer looked uncomfortable.
Julian stepped closer to the monitor.
“Play it.”
The video began.
There was no sound at first.
The camera above the suite entrance showed almost the entire room.
Khloe watched herself walk inside.
Seven minutes before the attack.
She looked tired.
She placed her clutch on the marble table.
She rubbed the small of her back.
She took one slow breath.
Watching herself now felt strange.
That woman had no idea what was about to happen.
Forty seconds later, Isabella entered.
Crimson gown.
Diamond earrings.
Perfect hair.
Perfect posture.
She closed the door behind her.
Even without sound, the hostility was obvious.
Isabella stepped into Khloe’s space.
Khloe moved back.
Isabella followed.
The security officer adjusted the audio.
A faint hiss filled the room.
Then Isabella’s voice came through.
“You were supposed to understand your role.”
Khloe looked toward Marcus.
He didn’t look at her.
On the recording, Khloe answered.
“What role?”
Isabella smiled.
“Smile for the cameras.”
“Give Marcus an heir.”
“Then disappear.”
Elaine closed her eyes.
Julian’s expression changed completely.
Not surprise.
Rage.
Marcus lowered his head.
Khloe felt her throat tighten.
Hearing the words again was different.
During the attack, adrenaline had distorted everything.
Now every syllable sounded deliberate.
Prepared.
Isabella had not confronted her impulsively.
She had come upstairs with a purpose.
The recording continued.
Khloe told Isabella to leave.
Isabella lunged.
Both hands struck Khloe’s chest.
Khloe stumbled backward.
The champagne glass fell.
It shattered.
Then came the movement Khloe could barely force herself to watch.
Isabella stepped forward.
Her heel struck Khloe’s side.
Khloe collapsed.
Julian turned away from the screen.
Elaine whispered something under her breath.
Marcus remained frozen.
Isabella finally spoke from across the room.
“I already told you.”
Her voice shook.
“She threatened me first.”
Nobody answered.
Isabella looked desperate now.
“That camera doesn’t show what happened before I came in.”
Khloe stared at her.
“You followed me upstairs.”
“You locked the door.”
“You told me to disappear.”
Isabella shook her head.
“You twisted everything.”
Julian turned toward her.
“You should stop talking.”
“I have rights.”
“You do.”
Julian’s voice was remarkably calm.
“That’s why hospital counsel is already on the way.”
Isabella looked toward Marcus.
“Say something.”
Marcus finally raised his eyes.
The desperation in Isabella’s face intensified.
“Marcus.”
Khloe saw it.
The familiarity.
Not the casual familiarity of acquaintances.
Not even the familiarity of two people who had spent too many evenings together at charity events.
There was something private in the way Isabella said his name.
Something practiced.
Something that belonged behind closed doors.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“Why is she looking at you like that?”
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Khloe.”
“Answer me.”
“This isn’t the time.”
She almost laughed.
The sound died before it reached her mouth.
“I’m sitting in a hospital bed because she attacked me.”
“She just told me I was supposed to give you an heir and disappear.”
“She’s looking at you like she expects you to protect her.”
“And you’re telling me this isn’t the time?”
Marcus stepped toward the bed.
Julian moved between them.
It happened so naturally that Khloe nearly missed it.
Her uncle had always liked Marcus.
Or at least she thought he had.
Julian Mercer trusted almost nobody.
He had built Mercer Health from one regional hospital into one of the largest privately controlled medical networks in the country.
He could terrify a room full of executives without raising his voice.
Yet for six years, he had defended Marcus.
When Khloe’s mother had questioned the speed of their engagement, Julian had supported it.
When the Mercer board resisted Marcus joining their expansion committee, Julian had cast the deciding vote.
When tabloids called Marcus Thorne a ruthless corporate predator who married into another dynasty, Julian had told Khloe not to listen.
“He loves you,” Julian had once said.
Standing between them now, Julian looked at Marcus as if he had never seen him before.
Marcus stopped.
“Julian.”
“Stay where you are.”
“I’m not going to hurt her.”
Julian’s eyes flashed.
“You may already have.”
Silence filled the suite.
The security officer cleared his throat.
“There’s more.”
Marcus turned sharply.
“What?”
The officer pointed to the timestamp.
“The incident begins at 9:41 p.m.”
He tapped the screen.
“But Ms. Rossi entered the suite earlier tonight.”
Khloe frowned.
“What do you mean?”
The officer looked at her carefully.
“There’s another recorded segment.”
Marcus’s face changed.
It was subtle.
A tightening around his eyes.
A slight shift in his breathing.
But Khloe saw it.
So did Julian.
“What segment?” Julian asked.
The officer hesitated.
“Twenty-six minutes before Mrs. Thorne came upstairs.”
Khloe stopped breathing for a second.
Julian looked toward Marcus.
“Who was in the room?”
The security officer did not answer immediately.
He didn’t have to.
Khloe already knew.
She looked at her husband.
Marcus stared at the floor.
Her stomach seemed to drop despite the baby’s weight.
“Marcus.”
He raised his head.
“Khloe, I need to explain something before you watch it.”
That sentence told her everything and nothing at once.
She pulled her hands tighter around her stomach.
“Who was in this room?”
Marcus said nothing.
Julian stepped toward him.
“Answer her.”
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
Then he looked directly at Khloe.
“Isabella.”
The room became very quiet.
Khloe felt her pulse in her throat.
“You were alone with her?”
“Yes.”
“In this suite?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Marcus looked toward the monitor.
“That’s complicated.”
“No.”
Khloe’s voice was softer than she expected.
“It’s probably very simple.”
Marcus flinched.
Across the room, Isabella suddenly stopped crying.
Khloe noticed that too.
She was watching Marcus.
Waiting.
The security officer shifted uncomfortably.
Julian pointed toward the screen.
“Play the earlier footage.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Julian, wait.”
“No.”
“There are things on that recording Khloe doesn’t understand.”
Khloe stared at him.
“Then I guess I’m about to.”
The officer selected the earlier timestamp.
9:09 p.m.
The empty suite appeared.
Nine seconds passed.
The door opened.
Marcus entered.
He wore the same black tuxedo he was wearing now.
He checked behind him.
Then he closed the door.
Khloe’s fingers went numb.
Twelve seconds later, the door opened again.
Isabella stepped inside.
But she wasn’t angry.
She was smiling.
Marcus walked toward her.
Isabella said something the microphone did not pick up clearly.
Marcus answered.
Then Isabella reached into her clutch and removed a cream-colored envelope.
She held it between them.
Marcus did not take it immediately.
They argued.
The audio crackled.
Then Isabella moved closer.
Far too close.
Marcus said something.
She touched his chest.
Khloe’s heart pounded.
Marcus caught Isabella’s wrist.
For one second, Khloe almost convinced herself he was stopping her.
Then Isabella rose onto her toes.
And kissed him.
Marcus did not immediately move away.
Khloe looked down.
She couldn’t watch.
Julian swore quietly.
Elaine turned her face toward the window.
Marcus spoke.
“Khloe.”
“Don’t.”
“It isn’t what it looks like.”
Khloe looked at him.
For the first time that night, real anger came through her fear.
“You actually said that.”
Marcus swallowed.
“Listen to me.”
“You let her kiss you.”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t stop her.”
“I should have.”
“Was that the first time?”
He said nothing.
Khloe’s chest tightened.
“Marcus.”
“No.”
One word.
Small.
Final.
Khloe nodded once.
Something in her expression must have changed because Marcus took another step forward.
Julian blocked him again.
On the screen, the recording continued.
Isabella pulled away.
She handed Marcus the envelope.
This time he took it.
The microphone caught her voice clearly.
“You have until the baby is born.”
Marcus looked at the envelope.
Isabella continued.
“After that, the trust changes everything.”
Khloe froze.
Julian’s head snapped toward the screen.
Marcus whispered.
“Damn it.”
The security officer paused the footage.
Khloe looked from Marcus to Julian.
“What trust?”
Nobody answered.
She stared at her uncle.
“What trust is she talking about?”
Julian’s face had gone pale.
That frightened Khloe more than anything else.
Julian Mercer did not go pale.
Not during lawsuits.
Not during hostile board meetings.
Not when his own company had been investigated by federal regulators five years earlier and cleared.
But now he looked shaken.
“Uncle Julian?”
He looked at Marcus.
“What did you tell her?”
Marcus’s voice dropped.
“Nothing.”
“What does she know?”
“I don’t know.”
“That’s a lie.”
Marcus clenched his jaw.
“I never told her about the birth provision.”
Khloe stared at him.
“The what?”
Marcus realized his mistake instantly.
Julian closed his eyes.
Khloe slowly sat straighter.
“What birth provision?”
Neither man spoke.
Her fear turned into something colder.
“You both know what she meant.”
Julian approached the bed.
“Khloe, this is not something you should be dealing with tonight.”
She laughed then.
A short, disbelieving sound.
“Apparently everyone has been deciding what I should and shouldn’t know.”
“Tell me.”
Julian glanced toward the nurse.
Then toward Isabella.
“We should speak privately.”
“No.”
Khloe pointed at Marcus.
“He stays.”
Marcus looked surprised.
“So does she.”
Isabella’s eyes widened.
Khloe met her gaze.
“You wanted me to disappear.”
“Now you can stand there while I find out why.”
Julian hesitated.
Then he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.
He removed his phone.
He made one call.
“Bring the Mercer family trust file to Suite Fourteen.”
He listened.
“No.”
“The original.”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
“Now.”
He ended the call.
Khloe watched him.
“What happens when my baby is born?”
Julian sat across from her.
“For most families, nothing beyond what should happen.”
“A child enters the world.”
“Parents take the child home.”
“Life changes.”
“But your mother structured certain assets differently.”
Khloe felt a chill.
“My mother?”
Julian nodded.
“Before she died.”
Khloe’s voice dropped.
“What assets?”
Marcus turned toward the window.
Julian looked at her for several seconds before answering.
“Thirty-eight percent of Mercer Health.”
Elaine inhaled sharply.
Even Isabella looked startled.
Khloe stared at her uncle.
“I already own Mercer shares.”
“You own twelve percent directly.”
“The remainder has been held separately.”
“For whom?”
Julian looked at her stomach.
Khloe’s hands tightened.
“For my child?”
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
Julian did not answer.
The door opened.
A hospital attorney entered carrying a thick blue file.
He handed it to Julian.
Julian placed it on the table beside Khloe.
Marcus looked at the file as if he wished it would disappear.
Julian opened it.
Inside was a document bearing Khloe’s full legal name.
KHLOE ELENA MERCER THORNE.
She had not used her maiden name professionally in years.
Julian turned several pages.
Then stopped.
Khloe saw a signature at the bottom.
Her signature.
She leaned closer.
A strange sensation moved through her.
“I never signed this.”
Marcus turned around.
Julian looked down.
Khloe repeated herself.
“I never signed this.”
The attorney stepped forward.
Julian lifted a hand.
“Don’t touch anything.”
Khloe stared at the document.
Her name appeared beneath a section titled:
MATERNAL INCAPACITY AND TEMPORARY CUSTODIAL VOTING AUTHORITY.
Her eyes moved lower.
A sentence had been highlighted.
Upon the live birth of a qualifying descendant, temporary voting authority may transfer to the designated legal spouse under conditions of maternal incapacity, absence, or judicial finding.
Khloe stopped reading.
Her head lifted slowly.
She looked at Marcus.
“Legal spouse.”
Marcus’s face went white.
Isabella suddenly backed toward the wall.
Julian turned another page.
There was a notarized signature.
Khloe’s name.
A witness.
A notary.
And beneath them, one additional signature.
MARCUS ALEXANDER THORNE.
Khloe stared at it.
Marcus whispered.
“I can explain.”
Khloe looked up at him.
“No.”
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
“You can start by telling me why your signature is on a document I never signed.”
Marcus opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, the security officer spoke from behind them.
“Mr. Mercer.”
Julian turned.
The officer had resumed the earlier recording.
His expression was different now.
Uneasy.
“What?”
“You need to hear what Ms. Rossi says next.”
Everyone faced the monitor.
Onscreen, Isabella stood inches from Marcus.
She pointed at the envelope in his hand.
Then her voice came clearly through the speakers.
“You signed it.”
Marcus on the recording looked furious.
Isabella smiled.
“So when Khloe is declared unfit…”
She paused.
“…you get the baby.”
Khloe’s blood went cold.
Isabella’s smile widened on the screen.
“And once you get the baby…”
She tapped the envelope against Marcus’s chest.
“…you get the vote.”
The video froze.
Nobody spoke.
Then Khloe looked at her husband.
And for the first time since the attack, Marcus looked afraid of her.
Not afraid for her.
Afraid of what she had just learned.
But Khloe still didn’t know the worst part.
Because on the next page of the document was a date.
May you like
The date the agreement had supposedly been signed.
And according to that date, Marcus had signed it three months before Khloe ever became pregnant.
