Chapter 12 - FIFTY-SIX MINUTES

Khloe had never prepared for war in the back seat of a moving SUV.

Until that morning.

Margaret sat beside her, reviewing documents.

Julian joined by encrypted video with Mercer counsel.

Marcus called independent directors at Thorne International.

Sofia guarded Luca’s ledger as though it were a child.

Isabella sat across from Khloe.

For once, she had nothing sarcastic to say.

At 7:41, Khloe looked at her.

“You need to testify.”

Isabella stared.

“Against Conrad?”

“About tonight.”

“The plan.”

“The petition.”

“Everything.”

Isabella laughed nervously.

“That could put me in prison.”

Khloe’s expression did not change.

“You attacked me.”

“I know.”

“I’m not offering immunity.”

“I can’t.”

“Then why would I help?”

“Because your father deserves the truth.”

Isabella looked away.

“And because if Conrad wins today, Luca Rossi remains the thief in every official record that matters.”

Isabella’s jaw tightened.

Khloe continued.

“You said you wanted justice.”

“Now you get to decide whether you wanted justice or revenge.”

Isabella stared at her for a long time.

Then nodded.

“I’ll testify.”

Marcus looked toward her.

Isabella ignored him.

At 7:49, they entered Mercer Health headquarters through a private underground garage.

The emergency hearing would occur by secure video in the board chamber.

Hospital lawyers argued Khloe should remain under observation.

Her doctor came with her.

Khloe appreciated that more than she could say.

At 8:00, Marcus joined the Thorne board call from an adjacent conference room.

Conrad appeared on screen.

Perfect gray suit.

Calm expression.

Concerned father.

“Marcus.”

“Father.”

“I understand Khloe had an unfortunate episode.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“She was attacked.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“By a woman you manipulated.”

Conrad smiled faintly.

“Careful.”

“Your affair already makes you look unstable.”

Marcus almost laughed.

“You knew.”

“Of course I knew.”

“You had me followed?”

“I didn’t need to.”

“Isabella wanted to be seen.”

Marcus stared.

“Did you tell her Khloe would lose control if she became violent?”

Conrad leaned back.

“I told many people many things.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

“It’s experience.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

Conrad continued.

“You think you’re different from me.”

“You’re not.”

Marcus looked toward Khloe through the glass wall.

“Yes.”

“I am.”

Conrad laughed.

“You cheated on your pregnant wife.”

“You hid evidence twelve years ago.”

“You lied to your family.”

“You are exactly my son.”

Marcus absorbed every word.

Then said something Conrad did not expect.

“You’re right.”

Conrad stopped smiling.

Marcus continued.

“I did those things.”

“I will answer for them.”

“But I’m done letting my shame make me useful to you.”

Silence.

Conrad leaned forward.

“You have no idea what happens if Mercer takes control of our debt.”

“Maybe you should have thought about that before trying to steal my wife’s company.”

Conrad’s eyes hardened.

At 8:12, the Thorne board removed Marcus from active executive authority pending investigation into conflicts involving Isabella.

Conrad expected Marcus to panic.

Marcus simply voted in favor of his own suspension.

That disturbed Conrad more than resistance would have.

At 8:28, Khloe entered the Mercer board chamber.

Julian sat on one side.

Margaret on the other.

A judge appeared by secure connection.

Conrad’s counsel joined remotely.

Richard Hale represented Graybridge.

Khloe felt her body tense.

Richard looked pleasant.

Professional.

Forgettable.

Exactly the kind of man dangerous people preferred.

The judge began.

Conrad’s filing alleged instability.

Undisclosed conflicts.

Potential danger to the unborn child.

A physical altercation at the hospital.

Khloe listened.

Every sentence transformed her from victim into liability.

Then Richard displayed a still image.

Khloe on the floor.

Isabella several feet away.

Marcus entering.

Without the video, it looked ambiguous.

Khloe understood the plan perfectly.

A photograph without context.

A petition prepared in advance.

A forged amendment.

All they needed was doubt.

Khloe’s attorney stood.

“We have complete footage.”

Richard smiled.

“We dispute its chain of custody.”

Elaine’s eyes widened.

Richard continued.

“The camera was temporarily installed by an event employee.”

“Not part of permanent hospital infrastructure.”

“Timestamp synchronization has not yet been independently verified.”

Khloe looked toward Margaret.

“They’re going to challenge it.”

Margaret nodded.

“They don’t need to prove it fake.”

“Only create enough uncertainty for temporary relief.”

The judge allowed the footage provisionally.

Everyone watched.

Isabella entering.

Threatening Khloe.

Shoving her.

The kick.

The staged story afterward.

Richard’s confidence weakened.

Then Isabella appeared live.

Her lawyer sat beside her.

She had changed into plain hospital clothing.

No crimson gown.

No diamonds.

No performance.

She told the truth.

“I followed Khloe upstairs.”

“I wanted a confrontation.”

“I was told that if Khloe appeared unstable, a legal process could begin.”

“Who told you?” the judge asked.

Isabella looked toward Richard Hale’s video window.

“Mr. Hale.”

Richard’s face changed.

His attorney objected.

Isabella continued.

“He told me Suite Fourteen had no active camera.”

The judge stared.

Richard denied everything.

Then Elaine produced the vendor email authorizing camera suspension.

Sender.

Richard Hale.

His face went pale.

Khloe felt momentum shift.

For the first time that night, they were ahead.

Then Richard played his own recording.

Marcus’s voice.

Khloe froze.

A meeting.

Three weeks earlier.

Conrad’s office.

Marcus said:

“If Khloe becomes unable to vote, I’ll take temporary control.”

Khloe turned toward him.

Marcus went white.

Richard continued the audio.

Conrad asked:

“And if she refuses?”

Marcus answered:

“She won’t have a choice.”

The room went silent.

Khloe felt betrayed all over again.

Marcus stood.

“That recording is edited.”

Richard smiled.

“Of course you’ll say that.”

Khloe stared at Marcus.

“What were you talking about?”

Marcus looked desperate.

“Not what he’s claiming.”

“What were you talking about?”

“The emergency proxy.”

“You told him I wouldn’t have a choice.”

“Because I was trying to convince him I agreed.”

“Why?”

“So he would show me the document.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

Another secret plan.

Another deception.

Another man deciding she should not know.

The judge called for a recess to review evidence.

Khloe walked out.

Marcus followed.

“Khloe.”

She turned.

“You keep asking me to judge you by explanations I only get after I catch you.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Because from where I’m standing, you still think the right motive makes secrecy noble.”

Marcus said nothing.

Margaret approached.

“We have a bigger problem.”

Khloe looked at her.

“What?”

“Graybridge filed a notice.”

“What notice?”

Margaret handed her the tablet.

The nominee trust holding Khloe’s hidden twenty-two percent had called an emergency vote.

At 9:00 a.m.

Twenty-four minutes away.

Purpose:

REMOVE JULIAN MERCER AS EXECUTIVE CHAIR.

Khloe looked at her uncle.

“Who replaces him?”

Margaret scrolled.

May you like

Her face changed.

“Conrad Thorne.”
