Chapter 19 - THE SECURITY CONTRACT

Khloe felt exhausted by documents.

Every piece of paper had another meaning beneath it.

Every signature belonged to one purpose and somehow served another.

Julian sat across from Rowe.

“Three months ago, hospital security brought me a threat assessment.”

“Against Khloe?”

“Yes.”

“Who requested it?”

“I did.”

Khloe stared.

“You never told me.”

Julian looked ashamed.

“I received anonymous messages.”

“What messages?”

“References to your pregnancy.”

“Your trust.”

“Marcus.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Julian almost said the old answer.

Khloe saw him stop.

He gave a tired smile.

“Because I was afraid.”

That was different.

Not protection.

Not strategy.

Fear.

He continued.

“I thought telling you would make the threat real.”

“So I hired outside security.”

“Through those companies?”

“I believed through one company.”

Rowe nodded.

“Someone split the contract payments across three entities.”

Marcus frowned.

“Who prepared the paperwork?”

Julian thought.

“My chief of staff.”

“Name?”

“Samuel Price.”

Rowe looked up.

“I don’t know that name.”

Khloe did.

Samuel had worked for Julian for nine years.

Quiet.

Efficient.

Invisible.

The kind of person who knew every meeting and every door.

“Where is he?” Khloe asked.

Julian called.

No answer.

Security checked.

Samuel had not reported to Mercer headquarters that morning.

His apartment was empty.

His phone disconnected.

Marcus looked at Rowe.

“Conrad’s mole.”

Rowe shook his head.

“Maybe.”

Khloe noticed.

“You don’t think so.”

“Conrad had moles.”

“But Samuel’s activity doesn’t match.”

“How?”

“The proxy advisory firm he funded worked against Conrad in two votes.”

Julian frowned.

“Then who was he working for?”

Rowe spread the records.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to determine.”

One payment funded surveillance of Isabella.

Another funded research into Marcus.

The third funded opposition research into Conrad.

Khloe stared.

“Samuel was investigating everyone.”

“Yes.”

“For Julian?”

Julian shook his head.

“I authorized security around Khloe.”

“Nothing else.”

Rowe nodded.

“I believe you.”

Khloe looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because Samuel was following another instruction set.”

“From whom?”

Rowe placed a photocopy on the table.

An old letter.

Elena’s handwriting.

SAMUEL,

IF THE PREGNANCY PROVISION IS EVER ACTIVATED, YOU WILL KNOW SOMEONE HAS BREACHED THE FAMILY STRUCTURE.

DO NOT TRUST CONRAD.

DO NOT TRUST MARGARET UNTIL HER ROLE IS VERIFIED.

DO NOT TRUST MARCUS UNTIL HE CONFESSES WHAT HE DESTROYED.

AND DO NOT TRUST JULIAN’S INSTINCT TO PROTECT THE COMPANY BEFORE THE TRUTH.

Khloe stared.

Her mother had recruited Samuel.

Years ago.

Rowe continued.

“Samuel wasn’t Conrad’s mole.”

“He was Elena’s second protocol.”

Julian laughed softly.

“My sister built an army after she died.”

Khloe did not find it funny.

“Where is Samuel?”

Rowe looked toward the records.

“I think he ran because Conrad discovered him.”

Marcus asked, “Or because Samuel found something.”

Rowe nodded.

“Exactly.”

Khloe stared at the payments.

“What was the proxy firm researching?”

“Mercer governance.”

“Specifically?”

Rowe hesitated.

“Succession.”

Khloe’s hands moved to her stomach.

“The baby.”

“No.”

Rowe looked at Julian.

“Your succession.”

Julian’s face changed.

“What?”

“The firm modeled what happens if you resign or die.”

Khloe frowned.

“Who becomes chair?”

Julian answered automatically.

“The board elects an interim.”

“Who has the strongest voting coalition?”

Julian thought.

Then went still.

“Khloe.”

Rowe nodded.

“Once Graybridge activates.”

Marcus stared.

“So Elena didn’t only protect Khloe’s inheritance.”

“She positioned her to take Mercer.”

Julian looked at Khloe.

She felt no joy.

No ambition.

Only another decision made before she knew she was part of the game.

“I don’t want Julian’s chair.”

Julian smiled faintly.

“That’s probably why Elena wanted you to have the choice.”

Khloe looked toward him.

“You knew Mom wanted me to lead someday.”

“Yes.”

“She told me.”

“When?”

“Before she died.”

“And?”

“I told her you should decide.”

Khloe stared.

That surprised her.

“One good decision.”

Julian smiled sadly.

“Occasionally.”

Rowe’s phone buzzed.

He checked it.

His expression changed.

“Samuel just used a credit card.”

“Where?”

“A bus station in Philadelphia.”

Marcus stood.

“We can get agents there.”

Rowe shook his head.

“He bought one ticket.”

“To where?”

“Washington.”

Khloe frowned.

“Why Washington?”

Rowe’s eyes narrowed.

“Because tomorrow morning the Senate Banking Committee is holding a closed staff briefing on Thorne International’s infrastructure contracts.”

Marcus stared.

“My father’s federal contracts.”

“Yes.”

“If Samuel has evidence…”

“He may be trying to deliver it.”

Julian grabbed his coat.

Khloe looked at him.

“No running alone.”

Julian smiled.

“I was going to call counsel.”

“Good.”

They arranged federal contact.

Two hours later, Samuel Price voluntarily entered a federal building in Washington.

He carried one backpack.

Inside were copies of contracts.

Payment logs.

Political consulting invoices.

And one encrypted drive.

Samuel asked to speak with Khloe by secure video.

He looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry I disappeared.”

“Why did you?”

“Conrad’s people found out I had the drive.”

“What’s on it?”

Samuel looked toward Julian.

“Everything Elena couldn’t prove.”

“About Conrad?”

“Yes.”

“And more.”

Khloe felt dread.

“What more?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Elena believed Conrad was not acting alone.”

Marcus frowned.

“Who?”

Samuel shook his head.

“She never identified the second person conclusively.”

“But she narrowed it to someone inside Mercer.”

Julian stared.

“Me?”

“No.”

Samuel looked at him.

“She suspected you of compromise.”

“Not conspiracy.”

Julian exhaled.

“Who then?”

Samuel opened the drive.

A folder appeared.

MERCER INTERNAL — PARTNER X.

Khloe stared.

“Who is Partner X?”

Samuel opened a spreadsheet.

Payments from Thorne shell companies.

Consulting fees.

Stock options.

Real estate transfers.

All routed to an unidentified Mercer insider.

Then one final document.

A photograph.

Khloe recognized the person immediately.

She stopped breathing.

Elaine Parker.

The event coordinator.

The woman who had stood behind Marcus when he found Khloe on the floor.

The woman who arranged the backup camera.

The woman who followed Isabella in Venice.

Elaine.

Julian stared.

“That makes no sense.”

Samuel shook his head.

“Look closer.”

Rowe enlarged the image.

The woman looked like Elaine.

But slightly younger.

The photo was dated thirteen years earlier.

Elaine had told Khloe she joined Mercer events eight years ago.

Khloe felt cold.

“Who is she?”

Samuel answered.

“Her real name is not Elaine Parker.”

The room went silent.

“Then who?”

May you like

Samuel looked directly at Khloe.

“Elaine Parker died fifteen years ago.”
