Chapter 14 - THE BENEFICIARY

Julian demanded the document immediately.

Conrad’s team released only three pages.

Not the full agreement.

Margaret studied them.

“The signatures appear authentic.”

Julian stared.

“I signed a nominee structure.”

“I did not sign myself as beneficiary.”

Khloe watched him.

“Could someone have added that page later?”

“Yes.”

Margaret nodded.

“But we need the original.”

Isabella looked furious.

“My father died over this.”

“Everyone keeps telling us documents were changed.”

“Which version is real?”

Khloe looked at her.

“That’s what we’re going to prove.”

Isabella laughed bitterly.

“Before or after another twelve years?”

The question hurt because it was fair.

Julian walked toward Khloe.

“I never took that money.”

“I never controlled Graybridge personally.”

“Do you believe me?”

Khloe stared at him.

Twenty-four hours earlier she would have answered instantly.

Now she could not.

“I believe you may believe that.”

Julian flinched.

It was almost the same thing Marcus had said about Daniel.

Trust had become layers.

At 9:17, federal investigators detained Richard Hale for questioning.

At 9:31, Margaret provided her full statement.

At 9:44, Graybridge froze all voting activity pending ownership review.

Conrad had failed to seize Mercer.

But his public accusation succeeded in another way.

Mercer Health stock dropped nine percent in forty minutes.

Thorne debt spreads widened.

News networks filled with headlines.

SECRET FAMILY FUND.

TWELVE-YEAR COVER-UP.

PREGNANT HEIRESS AT CENTER OF DYNASTY WAR.

Khloe turned off the television.

She refused to become entertainment inside her own crisis.

Her doctor insisted she return to the hospital for monitoring.

This time she agreed.

Marcus rode with her.

They sat in silence.

Halfway there, he spoke.

“I signed the emergency proxy.”

Khloe turned.

“What?”

Marcus stared straight ahead.

“In March.”

The words hit harder because she had stopped expecting another confession that morning.

“You said you signed an acknowledgment.”

“I lied.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

“Why?”

“My father showed me the altered clause.”

“He told me someone inside Mercer was preparing to move against you.”

“He said if I signed the proxy, I could prevent anyone else from taking control if you became incapacitated.”

“You believed Conrad wanted to protect me.”

“No.”

“I believed I could use the document against him.”

Khloe laughed without humor.

“Another secret plan.”

“Yes.”

“Another lie.”

“Yes.”

“Another decision about my life made without me.”

“Yes.”

Marcus did not defend himself.

That somehow made it worse.

“What exactly did you sign?”

“A conditional proxy.”

“Temporary voting authority if a medical or judicial incapacity finding occurred.”

“Did you know the pregnancy clause was forged?”

“Not then.”

“When did you learn?”

“August.”

“And you still didn’t tell me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I was trying to get the original from my father.”

Khloe turned toward the window.

Marcus’s voice broke.

“I kept thinking if I fixed everything before you knew, then you would never have to carry it.”

She looked at him.

“I’m carrying your child.”

“I’m carrying your affair.”

“I’m carrying your father’s plan.”

“I’m carrying twelve years of secrets from people who say they love me.”

Her eyes filled.

“The weight wasn’t created by knowing.”

“It was created by what all of you did.”

Marcus looked down.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You’re starting to.”

They arrived at the hospital.

Khloe went through fetal monitoring.

The baby remained healthy.

Her blood pressure was elevated.

She was ordered to rest.

She almost laughed.

Rest.

While two corporate empires were fighting over documents written before she had met half the people involved.

Isabella requested permission to speak with her privately.

Khloe almost refused.

Then allowed it.

Isabella entered wearing jeans and a borrowed sweater.

She looked nothing like the woman in the crimson gown.

Khloe studied her.

“What do you want?”

“To tell you something before lawyers tell me not to.”

“That’s new.”

Isabella accepted the insult.

“I knew about Marcus’s proxy.”

Khloe stared.

“When?”

“September.”

“From Conrad?”

“No.”

“Sofia.”

Khloe frowned.

“Sofia knew?”

“She found a copy.”

“She told me Marcus had signed.”

“That’s when I became convinced he was going to leave you.”

Khloe almost pitied her.

Almost.

“Because he had a document that could give him control?”

“He told me in Venice he would leave you.”

“And then you saw proof he might gain control if I was removed.”

Isabella nodded.

“I thought he had chosen me.”

Khloe stared.

“You thought helping him take my company was romance.”

Isabella looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“Then why did Sofia keep investigating?”

“Because she didn’t believe Marcus was the real target.”

“She thought Conrad was using all of us.”

Khloe nodded.

“Sofia was right.”

Isabella looked down.

“I attacked you because I thought you were the only thing standing between me and the life Marcus promised.”

Khloe’s voice went cold.

“Do not make your violence sound romantic.”

“I’m not.”

“I’m telling you how stupid I was.”

“That doesn’t make it less cruel.”

“I know.”

Isabella’s eyes filled.

“I’ll testify to everything.”

“Even if I go to prison.”

Khloe looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because I spent twelve years wanting someone to tell the truth about my father.”

“I don’t get to demand that from everyone else and lie about what I did to you.”

For the first time, Khloe believed her.

Not forgave.

Believed.

Isabella stood to leave.

Then stopped.

“There’s something else.”

Khloe waited.

“The night before Venice, Marcus met Sofia.”

Khloe stared.

Marcus had never mentioned that.

“Where?”

“New York.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“But Sofia came home furious.”

“She said Marcus was willing to sacrifice someone again.”

Khloe’s chest tightened.

“Who?”

Isabella shook her head.

“She never told me.”

Khloe called Sofia immediately.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a secure email arrived from Sofia.

One attachment.

An audio recording.

Khloe pressed play.

Marcus’s voice.

Two months earlier.

“Sofia, if the choice is between exposing Julian and protecting Khloe, I protect Khloe.”

Sofia answered.

“Even if Julian is innocent?”

Marcus said:

“Even then.”

Khloe stared at the phone.

Marcus had been hiding something about Julian long before tonight.

And whatever it was, he had once been willing to let her uncle take the fall.
