Chapter 4 - The Hostage

Heavy footsteps echoed loudly against the marble floor of the foyer.
Marcus walked into the room, holding a crowbar and a smug smile.
He didn’t look like the polished executive Julian had known for ten years.
He looked like a dangerous stranger.
“Well, well, the grand revelation,” Marcus said, looking at the terrified Eleanor.
Julian stepped in front of his mother to shield her from the intruders.
“If you touch my family, I will kill you, Marcus,” Julian promised.
Marcus just chuckled and walked over to Vanessa, kissing her cheek.
“We don’t want to hurt anyone unless we have to,” Marcus lied smoothly.
“We just want the offshore account codes, Julian.”
Julian realized they were after the fifty million dollars he had recently hidden away for Elena’s trust fund.
“I’ll never give them to you,” Julian spat.
Vanessa sighed dramatically and cocked the silver handgun.
“I was hoping you’d say that,” she purred.
She nodded at Marcus, who immediately turned toward the stairs.
“Let’s see if little Elena remembers the passwords,” Marcus sneered as he started walking up.
Julian’s heart exploded with sheer panic.
He charged at Marcus, tackling his former friend to the ground.
The crowbar clattered loudly against the floor as the two men wrestled violently.
Vanessa aimed her gun, trying to get a clear shot at Julian without hitting her lover.
Suddenly, Eleanor swung her heavy wooden cane with all her might.
The cane struck Vanessa’s wrist, and the gun fired wildly into the ceiling.

Deafening silence followed the loud gunshot.
Then, a terrifying scream echoed from the second floor.
