Chapter 1 - TheWitness

Vanessa stood frozen in the grand foyer, her perfectly manicured hands resting on her hips.
She had just delivered her flawless lie with the confidence of a seasoned actress.
“Elena slipped,” she had said, her voice dripping with fake, motherly concern.
Julian stared at her, his jaw tightly clenched as he processed her words.
He slowly looked down at his daughter, who was trembling violently on the floor.
Elena’s tiny, raw hands were covered in angry red welts.
Julian noticed the heavy mop and the overturned bucket of soapy water nearby.
He knew his six-year-old daughter hadn’t been playing; she had been put to work.
The fear in Elena’s wide, tear-filled eyes told him everything he needed to know.
Vanessa smiled gently, believing her pristine reputation would shield her from any suspicion.
She thought she was completely untouchable in this wealthy household.
But just as she reached out to pat Julian’s arm, a rhythmic tapping sound broke the silence.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
A figure slowly emerged from the shadows at the top of the grand sweeping staircase.
It was Julian’s mother, Eleanor.
Eleanor had been bedridden for months, completely silent and supposedly unaware of the world around her.
But now, she stood tall, gripping a wooden cane, her sharp eyes fixed entirely on Vanessa.
Eleanor descended the stairs, step by agonizing step, while Vanessa’s confident smile began to crack.
When the old woman finally reached the bottom, she looked at her son.
“She didn’t slip, Julian,” Eleanor said, her voice raspy but echoing with undeniable authority.

Vanessa’s face went completely pale as Eleanor reached into her pocket.
The old woman slowly pulled out a small, black object that made Vanessa’s heart completely stop.
