Chapter 9 - The Promise

Thomas had promised Daniel many things when he was a boy.

A bicycle when he learned to swim.

A chance to work summers at the hotels.

Help starting a business if he produced a serious plan.

He had never promised him automatic ownership of everything we built.

Yet Daniel spoke as though a stolen birthright justified every choice he made.

I asked Margaret for Thomas's personal correspondence about Daniel's adulthood.

She warned that some of it could be painful.

It was.

Thomas had written about paying off one failed venture after another, then refusing to finance a third.

He had been worried about Daniel's gambling on speculative investments and his tendency to blame advisers when things collapsed.

I remembered all of it.

I also remembered arguing that our son would grow out of it.

Nora arranged a new care plan, this time with my participation rather than Daniel's permission.

I hired Lena for regular shifts and resumed physical therapy at home.

The work was difficult, sometimes humiliating, and entirely mine.

During one session I managed to transfer from my chair to a bench without assistance.

I cried afterward, furious that Daniel had made that small victory feel impossible.

Kendra's independent attorney contacted Margaret.

Kendra had agreed to an interview under conditions designed to preserve evidence and protect her own legal rights.

She described an elaborate promise from Daniel.

He said the trust would pay out after a medical evaluation declared me unable to manage property.

Owen had offered to "handle the doctors."

Kendra admitted she had helped process travel and consulting expenses.

She denied knowing the signatures were forged.

Then she disclosed the sentence Daniel repeated whenever he thought she was nervous.

"Mom will forgive anything once she knows I'm her only family."

I looked around the room at Margaret, Nora, Lena, and Priya.

Family, I realized, was no longer something a man could monopolize by reminding me we shared blood.

Priya interrupted my thoughts with urgent news.

May you like

A large transfer had been scheduled for midnight.

And its recipient was an account overseas.
