Chapter 17 - What Thomas Left Behind

The transfer did not prove a crime.
It proved that Owen and Daniel had a financial relationship much older than Daniel admitted.
Investigators recovered additional payments described as consulting fees.
Some dated back to Daniel's first failed business.
Others were made after Thomas's hospitalization.
I remembered Daniel visiting his father in the final weeks, sitting beside the bed and speaking gently while Thomas slept.
Those memories had helped me survive the funeral.
I would not let suspicion erase them without evidence.
When Daniel finally gave a full account through counsel, he said Owen had invested in his company years earlier.
The payments after its collapse were disguised loans.
Owen kept extending credit while demanding favors: access to household documents, old company files, and introductions to people who knew the trust.
Daniel claimed he had wanted to repay the debt without asking us for help.
"Why didn't you tell your father?" I asked during our last supervised conversation.
"Because he'd have said I was irresponsible."
"You were irresponsible."
He flinched.
"I know."
It was the first time he had agreed without bargaining.
I was not sure whether it signaled growth or exhaustion.
Margaret produced one final note from Thomas's archive.
In it he instructed the trustees to protect me even if the threat came from someone we loved.
He had not written Daniel's name.
Thomas understood that the most devastating betrayals do not always announce themselves in advance.
At home I placed his letter beside our wedding photograph.
I had been angry that he kept his concerns from me.
Now I could see his fear of burdening someone he loved.
He had been wrong to carry so much alone.
I did not have to repeat his mistake.
That night I met with Nora about the future of the trust.
We could preserve the hotel group, make my care secure, and change how discretionary distributions were handled.
May you like
But there remained a question that none of the legal filings could answer.
What would I do if Daniel asked me to forgive him?
