Chapter 6 - The False Doctor

The flash drive contained photographs, invoices, and recordings made on Kendra's phone.

Much of it showed small dishonesty: hotel receipts charged to the household account, gift purchases, and Daniel boasting about an inheritance he had never received.

Then Nora opened a folder labeled MEDICAL.

There was an appointment confirmation at a private clinic, a scanned signature page, and a recording made in Daniel's kitchen.

Daniel's voice was unmistakable.

"She forgets things all the time. Just put that in the letter."

Another man's voice answered.

"I can't put it in unless a doctor signs."

"Then find a doctor."

I felt something cold settle behind my ribs.

My medical history was complicated, but my mind was clear.

Daniel knew that better than anyone.

He had argued with me over crosswords only a week earlier.

He had watched me correct a trustee's calculation at lunch.

He did not believe I was incompetent.

He believed the accusation would be useful.

Margaret sent the material for forensic review and contacted the clinic.

The physician whose name appeared on the letter denied writing it.

The letterhead had been copied from an old website.

Nora cautioned that the recording needed authentication before it could become evidence.

I agreed.

At eighty, rage could still make me impatient, but I had not built a hotel company by confusing an accusation with proof.

That evening Daniel sent a handwritten note through counsel.

It was the first apology of his adult life that contained no request for money.

For three paragraphs he described stress, shame, and how the prospect of losing me had made him panic.

Then came the final sentence.

If I would restore his allowance and withdraw my statements, he would surrender the guardianship paperwork.

Margaret read it twice.

"That's not an apology," she said.

"No," I answered. "It's a price list."

At the bottom of the page, barely visible under the ink, were impressed marks from something written on top.

The forensic specialist enhanced them.

They were numbers.

A date.

And the name of a hotel that had burned down twenty years earlier.
