Chapter 4 - A Debt in My Name

The word mortgage hung between us like a door that would not close.

There was no mortgage I had approved.

Margaret had already pulled the public records and found an application for a secured credit line against trust property.

It had not funded, but its supporting documents were alarming.

My signature appeared under a declaration of capacity and consent.

Daniel had submitted copies of my identification, a financial summary, and a letter on the stationery of a physician who had never treated me.

"The lender is conducting a fraud review," Margaret explained.

"How close did he get?"

"Closer than he should have."

Outside, Daniel demanded that the officers arrest Margaret for keeping him out.

One officer explained that they were preserving the peace, not resolving the civil ownership question on the driveway.

A property manager provided Daniel with written instructions for retrieving personal belongings by appointment.

He tore the notice in half.

Kendra stared at the pieces and asked why he had told her the mansion was already his.

Daniel ordered her to get in the car.

She did not move.

For the first time I saw that she knew less than she pretended.

Nora brought me a folder of bank statements.

Amounts had been transferred from the household account into a company called Harborlight Leisure Consulting.

I knew no such firm.

Its registered agent shared an address with Kendra's beauty studio.

I did not need Margaret to tell me that a vacation was only the most visible expense.

"Do not assume her involvement until we see the records," she warned.

That caution was one reason I trusted her.

She pursued facts even when my anger asked for faster answers.

The following morning a courier delivered a sealed envelope to the trustee's office.

Inside was a copy of an unsigned guardianship petition, naming Daniel as the person who should control my decisions.

A sticky note across its cover carried three words in unfamiliar handwriting.

FILE AFTER TRIP.

I stared at the note until the letters blurred.

Daniel had planned to return from paradise and take what remained of my freedom.
