Chapter 16 - The Video

The buyer's name was Arturo Vega.

He repaired mobility equipment and had believed Daniel's claim that the chair was surplus property.

Once he learned the truth, he contacted the police and voluntarily preserved the video.

I refused to blame him for trusting a plausible seller.

The video began with the chair's wheels turning over the driveway stones.

I heard myself calling from the upstairs window.

Then Daniel laughed and told Arturo not to worry.

"She can't come down to stop us."

Arturo stopped the recording and apologized before playing the rest.

There was no pleasure in his face.

He had come to understand what he had witnessed.

The last part showed Daniel speaking to someone on the phone.

"Tell Owen the easy part is done," he said. "She'll sign anything when she's scared enough."

I had spent weeks wondering whether my son merely wanted an expensive holiday or something worse.

Now the answer was in his own voice.

Arturo brought my restored chair home a week later.

The technicians checked its custom fit and replaced a damaged brake.

I sat in it in the sunlight while Lena adjusted the footrests.

The familiarity was almost unbearable.

This chair had carried me through grief, therapy, and ordinary afternoons when the world felt too large.

Daniel had treated it like an item on a resale app.

I thanked Arturo.

He held my hand and said, "I wish I'd listened when you called out."

"So do I," I replied.

There was no need for either of us to pretend the moment could be undone.

That evening a sealed investigative report reached Margaret under lawful disclosure.

It contained evidence tying Owen to the fraudulent credit application and the old invoice scheme.

But there was a detail neither of us could explain.

A bank transfer had been made from Owen's company to Daniel only one week before Thomas died.

The memo read: FINAL INSTALLMENT.

I had believed Thomas's death closed a chapter of our family history.

Now I wondered whether someone had been paying my son for years.
