Chapter 8 - Thomas Had Known

I knew Thomas's handwriting as well as my own reflection.

For forty-one years it appeared on birthday cards, shopping lists, hotel schedules, and apologies written after arguments neither of us knew how to finish.

Seeing it again hurt more than I expected.

His letter began without sentiment.

He had discovered irregularities in Mariner House payments after the reconstruction.

At first he suspected an outside vendor.

Later he found evidence that a trusted employee had approved invoices with no corresponding work.

The employee had left before the review concluded.

Thomas named him: Owen Mercer.

I lowered the letter.

"Owen worked for us?"

Margaret nodded.

"Briefly, after the insurance adjustment. He was a temporary consultant."

Thomas had kept records because Owen threatened a defamation suit when questioned.

He believed Owen might someday target the family fortune through a weaker point than the business itself.

At the time that sounded dramatic.

Now the protected trust looked less like caution and more like a map drawn for a disaster Thomas expected me to survive.

A second envelope held copies of old wire requests, canceled checks, and a signed statement from the accountant who investigated the claims.

None of it proved Daniel's present wrongdoing.

It did establish that Owen knew the trust's holdings and had once been barred from the company's books.

I had to confront an ugly question.

How had Daniel found him?

That answer arrived through a calendar export recovered from Daniel's cloud account, obtained with proper authorization from records he had stored on trust-owned devices.

Their first appointment was dated eighteen months earlier.

The meeting title was simply: MOTHER.

I remembered that month.

Daniel had driven me to an appointment and then disappeared for two hours, claiming traffic.

I had thanked him for coming back.

Margaret waited while I folded Thomas's letter.

"Do you still want to pursue this?" she asked.

"More than ever."

Then Priya called.

She had found a second beneficiary designation, filed shortly after Thomas's death.

It named someone I had never heard of.

And my son's name appeared on the witness line.
