Chapter 5 - The Missing Second
I played the video three times before trusting what I saw.
Lily was standing quietly with her plate.
She leaned toward the serving platter and asked a question the camera's distant microphone barely caught.
Her hands stayed close to her body.
Nothing flew across the table.
No one recoiled from her.
Then the recording ended in an abrupt jump.
I asked Megan for the full clip.
She sent back a single sentence.
"Ask nicely."
For a moment, rage nearly made me throw my phone.
Rachel took it only after I offered it.
"Save the original file and the message with it," she said.
"A trimmed video doesn't establish what happened afterward."
We backed up the clip, recorded its time information, and shared it with the reporting officer.
That evening, I asked Daniel a question I knew he could answer.
"Is there a kitchen camera at your parents' house?"
"You know there is."
"Does it keep full recordings?"
"Usually."
"Then ask your parents not to delete Thanksgiving."
He exhaled harshly.
"You are turning this into an investigation."
"Your sister sent me edited footage of our daughter."
"Maybe she thought it would help."
"Help whom?"
He ended the call.
That night, I lay awake beside Lily on Rachel's guest-room mattress.
Every time the building's heat clicked on, my daughter startled.
I wanted to ask her more questions, to build an unbreakable account of what had happened.
Instead, I let her sleep.
She deserved childhood more than I deserved certainty.
At seven the next morning, Rachel's neighbor brought over some borrowed winter clothes in Lily's size.
The simple kindness nearly undid me.
Then an email arrived from a lawyer whose name I didn't recognize.
The subject line was NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE MARITAL CONCERNS.
Attached was a letter claiming I had removed Lily from the marital home and was withholding contact from her father.
The letter was dated Thanksgiving night.
