Chapter 18 - The Counterattack Without a Shout

Once the new recording was authenticated to the extent necessary for the proceedings, Nora used it through the appropriate channels.
The factual dispute about Lily's conduct narrowed dramatically.
Megan's earlier statement could now be compared with footage showing a different sequence.
The report, medical documentation, and witness accounts reinforced what Lily had said from the beginning.
I didn't celebrate.
I wanted my daughter to wake up without asking whether her grandparents were angry.
Nora also took the financial evidence to the appropriate professionals and authorities for review.
The questioned signature, transactions, and house-related representations followed their own processes.

Daniel finally stopped contesting that Megan had struck Lily.
He told his lawyer he wanted to correct the account he'd previously given.
At our next meeting, he looked directly at me.
"I should have chosen her," he said.

It was a house with a blue door and flowers beside the steps.
He asked where he was in the picture.
"You're visiting," she said.
He looked at me with wet eyes.
I didn't rescue him from the answer.
Then Megan sent me one last direct message through a newly created account.
"You think you won because you found a video," she wrote.
"Ask your husband what he did the day after Thanksgiving."
I forwarded it to Nora.
