Chapter 15 - The Deadline in Red Ink

Three days later, we learned that the final installment related to a private investment contract Megan had signed without any realistic way to fulfill it.
She had promised an investor an ownership interest in a business and used the supposed sale of our house as proof she could repay a debt.
When the investor demanded documentation, Megan turned to Patricia.
Patricia turned to Daniel.
Daniel turned to our savings.
At each step, someone decided the next lie was smaller than telling the truth.
The investor's attorney had sent notice that legal action could follow if the matter remained unresolved after December twenty-third.
That deadline explained the frantic pressure at Thanksgiving.
Megan needed everyone obedient while Patricia decided how to contain the mess.
But the discovery also raised a new question.
Why had Megan struck Lily over an ordinary request for food?
Robert offered the simplest explanation.
She was angry, entitled, and used to having everyone excuse her.
I believed him.
Not every act of cruelty hides a brilliant scheme.
Sometimes the cruelty is the point, and the cover-up is the scheme that follows.
Still, the loan documents bothered me.
If Patricia had arranged them, why had she used a scan of my identification from years before?
Nora warned that questions like that could not be answered through intuition.
She kept working through the available legal process.
On December twenty-second, Daniel came to a scheduled visit and apologized directly to Lily.
"I should have helped you," he said.
"I was wrong."
She studied him for a long time.
"Will you help me next time?"
He swallowed.
"Yes."
I hoped he meant it.
Afterward, he asked to speak with me privately and showed me a sealed envelope.
"I found this in my mother's office," he said.
"I didn't know it existed."
Inside was a copy of a letter dated two months before our wedding.
It described an agreement about family obligations and future property.
My name appeared in the salutation.

I had never received it.
