Chapter 1 - The Woman With the Blue Bag

The deadbolt had barely clicked when my best friend answered the phone.

"Where are you?" Rachel asked.

I gave her the address and felt Lily shiver against my neck.

"Get in your car if you can," Rachel said.

"My keys are inside."

Her silence lasted one breath.

"I'm bringing my overnight bag, my work phone, and the dash camera."

"Why the camera?"

"Because I want a record of everything they say from this moment forward."

Rachel worked as a family-law paralegal, but she never confused legal advice with friendship.

She was the one person who had watched me shrink myself over seven years and had never called it compromise.

I moved Lily beneath the narrow porch overhang, where the wind couldn't reach her as easily.

Through the dining-room window, I saw my husband, Daniel, standing with his back to us.

Megan lifted her wineglass.

My mother-in-law touched Daniel's shoulder as if he were the person who needed comforting.

Lily raised her face.

"Are we going home, Mommy?"

"We are going somewhere safe."

"Is Daddy coming?"

I couldn't bring myself to lie.

"I don't know, sweetheart."

A silver SUV rolled around the corner twelve minutes later.

Rachel jumped out carrying a thick navy blanket and wrapped it around Lily before she said a word to me.

Then she looked at the locked door.

"Tell me what happened from the beginning."

I told her, carefully, without softening a single detail.

She recorded my statement with my permission and photographed the red mark on Lily's cheek.

"We're going to urgent care," she said.

"It's Thanksgiving."

"Then we're going to the place that's open on Thanksgiving."

I looked up when the front door opened.

Daniel stood beneath the porch light with my coat in one hand and Lily's little pink sweater in the other.

"Can we not make this a whole thing?" he asked.

Rachel moved slightly in front of us.

"Your daughter needs a doctor," she said.

Daniel stared at the phone in her hand.

"Are you recording me?"

"I'm documenting what you choose to say."

He set the clothes on the porch railing.

"Mom says Emily got everyone worked up."

My name sounded strange in his mouth, like the name of someone he'd already decided not to believe.

"Megan slapped our daughter," I said.

"You know how Megan gets."

"And now I know how you get."

For the first time that night, Daniel looked afraid.

But he wasn't looking at Lily.

He was looking at Rachel's phone.

As we drove away, my own phone lit up with a text from an unfamiliar number.

"You have no idea what your husband promised us," it read.
