Chapter 11 - The Midpoint: The Family Meeting

The week after Thanksgiving, Patricia requested a family meeting through our attorneys.

Nora advised against any informal confrontation, so the meeting took place in a neutral conference room with counsel present where needed.

Patricia arrived dressed as though she were attending a charity luncheon.

Megan walked behind her wearing a thin, satisfied smile.

Daniel sat between his parents and me until I asked him to move.

He chose an empty chair.

Patricia began with a speech about family loyalty.

I interrupted only when she called Lily's report an exaggeration.

"She is five," I said.

"She asked for turkey."

Megan rolled her eyes.

"You have always raised her to think rules don't apply."

I felt anger rise and let it pass through me without speaking.

Nora placed the medical record and the truncated camera clip on the table.

Then she explained that the entire recording had been formally requested.

Megan stopped smiling.

Patricia asked who had provided the clip.

"Megan did," I answered.

My sister-in-law's mouth tightened.

The financial questions came next.

Patricia insisted she had never seen the disputed identification scan.

Her husband, Robert, looked at her so suddenly that everyone noticed.

"Pat," he said, "don't."

It was the first time I had ever heard him challenge her.

She turned sharply.

"Stay out of this."

Robert placed both hands on the table.

"We agreed the children would never be part of that loan."

Silence swallowed the room.

Even Megan appeared stunned.

Patricia told him to stop talking.

He stood up instead.

"I want the complete Thanksgiving recording preserved," he said.

"And I want the loan files examined."

For the first time, the family united against me was no longer united.

Outside, Daniel hurried after me.

"Emily, please," he said.

"Dad never defies her. Something's happening."

I looked back at the closed conference-room door.

"Something happened on Thanksgiving," I said.

"You just refused to see it."

That afternoon, Nora called with unexpected news.

Robert had offered to provide an independent statement about the night Lily was struck.

May you like

He said he had seen more than he'd admitted.
