Chapter 4 - The Story Megan Invented

Daniel said Lily had thrown food and hit Megan's arm.

I asked him whether he'd seen either thing.

He hesitated long enough to answer me.

"I saw the end of it," he said.

"You saw the slap."

"Emily, you know what I mean."

"No," I said. "For seven years, I have pretended I did."

I ended the call and wrote down his version of the story while the words were fresh.

By lunchtime, Patricia had sent relatives a carefully worded message about a regrettable misunderstanding caused by an overtired child.

The message never used the word slap.

It praised Megan for trying to maintain order.

It called my departure disruptive.

Within minutes, family members began texting me to smooth things over.

A cousin asked why I hadn't simply apologized for the scene.

An aunt urged me to think of Christmas.

I showed Rachel the thread.

"We need one response," she said, "not twenty fights."

I wrote that Lily had been struck, examined by a clinician, and kept away from further contact while I addressed her safety.

I refused to debate my five-year-old's character.

Then I muted the conversation.

At four that afternoon, my sister-in-law posted a photograph of the Thanksgiving table.

Everyone smiled around the turkey.

Daniel sat beside Megan, one arm draped over the back of her chair.

The caption read, FAMILY IS EVERYTHING.

Lily saw the picture over my shoulder.

"That's my chair," she said.

I locked the screen immediately, but she had already noticed the empty place beside Daniel.

"Did they eat my pie?"

I had brought a pumpkin pie with little pastry stars just for her.

"I don't know, baby."

She nodded and went back to her crayons.

Rachel followed me into the hallway.

"You can't keep carrying their feelings and your daughter's at the same time," she said.

A new message appeared from Megan.

It contained a short video of the dining room.

In it, Lily stood beside her chair, moments before the slap.

The angle came from Patricia's kitchen security camera.

Megan wrote, "Proof that your little angel wasn't so innocent."

I pressed play.

The clip stopped one second before Megan raised her hand.
